Beneath each question there are four choices respectively marked by letters A, B, C and D. Choose the right answer for each question. Write your answers on the answer sheet.

Passage 1

Some people think they have an answer to the troubles of automobile crowding and dirty air in large cities. Their answer is bicycle,or "bike".

In a great many cities, hundreds of people ride bicycles to work every day. In New Y ork City, some bike riders have even formed a group called Bike for a Better City. They claim that if more people rode bicycles to work there would be fewer automobiles in the downtown section of the city and therefore less dirty air from car engines.

For several years this group has been trying to get the city government to help bicycle riders. For example, they want the city to draw special lanes - for bicycles only -on some of the main streets, because when bicycle riders must use the same lanes as cars, there are accidents. Bike for a Better City feels that if there were special lanes, more people would use bikes.

But no bicycle lanes have been drawn. Not everyone thinks it is a good idea. Taxi drivers don't like the idea - they say it will slow traffic. Some store owners on the main streets don't like the idea - they say that if there is less traffic, they will have less business. And more people live too far from downtown to travel by bike.

The city government has not yet decided what to do. It wants to keep everyone happy. On weekends,Central Park - the largest piece of open ground in New Y ork - is closed to cars, and the roads may be used by bicycles only. But Bike for Better City says that this is not enough and keeps fighting to get bicycle lanes downtown.

Passage 3

In the United States, it is not customary to telephone someone very early in the morning. If you telephone him early in the day, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that the matter is very important and requires immediate attention. The same meaning is attached to telephone calls made after 11:00pm. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he assumes it is a matter of life or death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance.

If a late telephone call is regarded in the United States as a cause for concern, imagine the excitement and fear caused by a crowd of people arriving at the door at 2:00pm. On an island in the south Pacific, a plant manager from the United States had just such an experience. The natives of the island met one night to discuss a problem. When they arrived at a solution, they went to see the plant manager and woke him up to tell him what had been decided. Unfortunately, they did not know that it is a very serious matter to wake up Americans at such an hour. The plant manager, who did not understand the local culture, thought there was a fight and called the police. It never occurred to him(or to the natives)that parts of the day have different meanings in different cultures.

[A] V ery impolite.[B] Not usual.[C] V ery urgent.[D] Not necessary. 42.At which of the following hours is a phone call NOT regarded as of primary importance? _______

[A]11:00am.[B] 11:30pm.[C] 5:00am.[D] 12:00pm. 43.Why did the natives go to the plant manager's home and wake him up? _______

[A] To have a talk with him.

[B] To inform him of their decision.

[C] To discuss a problem with him.

[D] To tell him a problem they met with.

44.What was the manager's immediate reaction to the natives' arrival? _______

[A] He thought the natives were mad.

[B] He didn't take it seriously.

[C] He called in a policeman to talk with the natives.

[D] He believed there was a fight and called the police at once.

Science is a method o f answering theoretical questions; technology is a method of solving practical problems. Science has to do with discovering the facts and relationships betwee n observable phenomena in nature and with establishing theories that serve to o rganize these facts and relationships; technology has to do with tools, techniq ues, and procedures for implementing the finding of science. Another distinction between science and technology has to do with the progr ess in each. Progress in science excludes the human factor.
