I was going to die in Antarctica, I was certain. An image of my frost-covered body, colorless and lifeless, filled my mind as I glanced around. In all directions the empty wilderness of Antarctica stretched away from me, the only feature on the landscape was the division between snow and sky. I gazed sadly at my team. They were rapidly disappearing from my sight.

It happened in the year 2009 when I was head of an adventure(探险) attempting to reach the South Pole. The team was made up of ordinary women from all around the world—from Jamaica, India, Singapore and Cyprus—many of whom had never seen snow, or spent a night in a tent, before we set off. Our aim was to be the most international all-female team to reach the South Pole.

As I watched, the rest of the teammates marched on, unaware that I was not with them. By the time I realized that my sledge(雪橇) was firmly trapped, the team were

already a long way ahead of me. I called out to Era, my teammate, “Era! Stop!”

Getting no response I called again, but my shouts were carried away in the opposite direction by the wind. Seconds passed. Nothing. I was gradually being left alone, completely defenseless against the low temperatures of Antarctica.

My strength increased when I thought of a cold, lonely death. I pulled again my sledge, which moved a little. I removed the ice with my ski-pole and boot, desperately trying to break the sledge free. The sledge shot forward, knocking me off balance. I struggled to my feet and set off after the team.

I caught up just as Reena, my teammate from India, looked behind her and noticed there was one person missing. She swung around on her skis, in shock and spotted me in the near distance.

As we continued,my panic slowly faded. For the rest of the day, each of the team was glancing over their shoulder every few minutes. They were not going to risk losing me again.

I'm not a soccer fan, not even a person who knows much about soccer. But like a majority of the world's population, I've planned part of this summer around one event in particular: the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

From June 12 to July 13, the soccer world championship is probably the planet's most popular sporting event. And the World Cup has long enjoyed a high level of popularity in China, despite the country's low competitiveness in the sport.

So, why is the World Cup such a big deal to a layman like me and billions of others?

Many are in it for the spectacle. For some, it's the coming together of people from all over the globe. And for others, it's a rooted way of life in their country.

Let's start with star power. The biggest event in soccer certainly attracts many of the sport's biggest names and sees them fighting to lead their country to glory. Ever heard of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo? In the World Cup games, you get to see players as good as them giving their best performances. But despite being the world's two best soccer players, neither has won a World Cup. The beauty of soccer is that having one superstar guarantees you nothing. Both rely heavily on their 10 teammates to get good results.

Yes, soccer games can be boring. But in the total of 64 games during the World Cup, the odds of on-field drama are much higher. One-sided victories, last-minute turnarounds, penalty shootouts—history always repeats itself by offering exciting matches.

If star power and drama can't convince you to pay more attention to the tournament, you'll certainly enjoy the parties.

Around the world, hundreds of thousands will pack public spaces for viewing parties complete with food, beer and other activities. If you're more into the pub scene, many bars will be packed shoulder-to-shoulder with supporters. There, very likely, hugs will be shared between strangers and rounds will be bought for entire floors.

In short, there really is something for everyone in the World Cup. It's one of the few events in the world that truly unites us all, and it only takes place every four years. Trust me when I say that's a long time to wait if you miss the boat this time around.

5.How long does the 2014 World Cup last?

A. 12 days.

B. 13 days.

C. 25 days.

D. 31 days.

6.Which is probably NOT true according to the passage?

A. The spectacle of the World Cup is very popular.

B. Chinese enjoy the World Cup most.

C. The World Cup can get the world people truly united.

D. The World Cup is one of the few events in the world.

7.How often does the World Cup usually take place?

A. Every four years.

B. Every year.

C. Every two years.

D. Every ten years.

8.Why does the writer take Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as examples?

A. They are the sport's biggest names.

B. They are the world's two best soccer players.

C. To explain why the World Cup is one of the biggest sports events in the world.

D. To explain why the World Cup attracts so many people.

Swapping Houses for Vacations

When budgeting for a vacation, usually the most expensive part of the trip is the accommodations. The traditional way to take a vacation is to pack some bags, lock up the house, and travel to a new place to stay in a hotel. However, hotels are very expensive, and with rent or housing loan(贷款) due every month, it's

difficult for most people to pay for yet another place to stay. __1__ Luckily, there is a substitute called house swapping, and it's saving tourists a great deal of cash.

__2__ For example, if a couple from New York want to spend a week in Paris, they would place an ad offering to trade their New York apartment for one in Paris for a week. If a Parisian couple that want a vacation in New York read the advertisement, houses can be swapped, and both couples save hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars by avoiding big-city hotel fees. If all goes well, both couples can post positive reviews of the other's home online so that potential travelers can see that everything was fine. __3__ This builds a community of people who want to help each other out.

There are other advantages of swapping houses as well. __4__ Staying at someone's home puts you in a neighborhood that can give you a better representation of the life and culture in the place you're visiting. __5__ The next time you want to spend your vacation in a new place, but don't want to pay a fortune, check what's posted online and find a house to swap.

A. House swapping is most common in New York and Paris.

B. Hotels are often quite difficult to book when you want to explore a new home.

C. A lot of times, this extra cost prevents travelers from going very far from home.

D. To swap houses, people check the Internet for others planning to travel and trade homes.

E. With many house swapping sites growing, this new phenomenon is becoming easier than ever.

F. Hotels are often located where few people live, making them a strange place to experience a city.

G. On the other hand, if there were trouble, people could write about that to warn others not to trust the swappers.

Unit 2 English around the world The road to modern English At the end of the 16th century, about five to seven million people spoke English. Nearly all of them lived in England. Later in the next century, people from England made voyages to conquer other parts of the world and because of that, English began to be spoken in many other countries. Today, more people speak English as their first, second or foreign language than ever before. Native English speakers can understand each other even if they don’t speak the same kind of English. Look at this example: British Betty: Would you like to see my flat? American Amy: Yes. I’d like to come up to your apartment. So why has English changed over time? Actually, all languages change and develop when cultures meet and communicate with each other. At first, the English spoken in England between about AD 450 and 1150 was very different from the English spoken today. It was based more on German than the English we speak at present. Then gradually between about AD 800 and 1150, English became less like German because those who ruled England spoke first Danish and later French. These new settlers enriched the English language and especially its vocabulary. So by the 1600’s Shakespeare was able to make use of a wider vocabulary than ever before. In 1620 some British settlers moved to America. Later in the 18th century some British people were taken to Australia too. English began to be spoken in both countries. Finally by the 19th century the language was settled. At that time two big changes in English spelling happened: first Samuel Johnson wrote his dictionary and later Noah Webster wrote The America Dictionary of the English Language. The latter gave a separate identity to American English spelling. English now is also spoken as a foreign or second language in South Asia. For example, India has a very large number of fluent English speakers because Britain ruled India from 1765 to 1947. During that time English became the language for government and education. English is also spoken in Singapore and Malaysia and countries in Africa such as South Africa. Today the number of people learning English in China is increasing rapidly. In fact, China may have the largest number of English learners. Will Chinese English develop its own identity? Only time will tell. STANDARD ENGLISH AND DIALECTS What is standard English? Is it spoken in Britain, the US, Canada, Australia, India and New Zealand? Believe it or not, there is no such thing as standard English. This is because in the early days of radio, those who reported the news were expected to speak excellent English. However, on TV and the radio you will hear differences in the way people speak. When people use words and expressions different from “standard language”, it is called a dialect. American English has many dialects, especially the midwestern, southern, African American and Spanish dialects. Even in some parts of the USA, two people from neighboring towns speak a little differently. American English has so many dialects because people have come from all over the world. Geography also plays a part in making dialects. Some people who live in the mountains of the eastern USA speak with an older kind of English dialect. When Americans moved from one place to another, they took their dialects with them. So people from the mountains in the southeastern USA speak with almost the same dialect as people in the northwestern USA. The USA is a large country in which many different dialects are spoken. Although many Americans move a lot, they still recognize and understand each other’s dialects.

Unit 1 Living well-Reading MARTY’S STORY Hi, my name is Marry Fielding and I guess you could say that I am "one in a million". In other words, there are not many people like me. You see, I have a muscle disease which makes me very weak, so I can't run or climb stairs as quickly as other people. In addition, sometimes I am very clumsy and drop things or bump into furniture. Unfortunately, the doctors don't know how to make me better, but I am very outgoing and have learned to adapt to my disability. My motto is: live One day at a time. Until I was ten years old I was the same as everyone else. I used to climb trees, swim and play football. In fact, I used to dream about playing professional football and possibly representing my country in the World Cup. Then I started to get weaker and weaker, until I could only enjoy football from a bench at the stadium. In the end I went into hospital for medical tests. I stayed there for nearly three months. I think I had at least a billion tests, including one in which they cut out a piece of muscle from my leg and looked at it under a microscope. Even after all that, no one could give my disease a name and it is difficult to know what the future holds. One problem is that I don't look any different from other people. So sometimes some children in my primary school would laugh, when I got out of breath after running a short way or had to stop and rest halfway up the stairs. Sometimes, too, I was too weak to go to school so my education suffered. Every time I returned after an absence, I felt stupid because I was behind the others. My life is a lot easier at high school because my fellow students have accepted me. The few who cannot see the real person inside my body do not make me annoyed, and I just ignore them. All in all I have a good life. I am happy to have found many things I can do, like writing and computer programming. My ambition is to work for a firm that develops computer software when I grow up. Last year invented a computer football game and a big company has decided to buy it from me. I have a very busy life with no time to sit around feeling sorry for myself. As well as going to the movies and football matches with my friends, I spend a lot of time with my pets. I have two rabbits, a parrot, a tank full of fish and a tortoise. To look after my pets properly takes a lot of time but I find it worthwhile. I also have to do a lot of work, especially if I have been away for a while. In many ways my disability has helped me grow stronger psychologically and become more independent. I have to work hard to live a normal life but it has been worth it. If I had a chance to say one thing to healthy children, it would be this: having a disability does not mean your life is not satisfying. So don't feel sorry for the disabled or make fun of them, and don't ignore them either. Just accept them for who they are, and give them encouragement to live as

Unit1 Friendship Reading ANNE’S BEST FRIEND Do you want a friend whom you could tell everything to, like your deepest feelings and thoughts? Or are you afraid that your friend would laugh at you, or would not understand what you are going through? Anne Frank wanted the first kind, so she made her diary her best friend. Anne lived in Amsterdam in the Netherlands during World War II. Her family was Jewish so the had to hide or they would be caught by the German Nazis. She and her family hide away for two years before they were discovered. During that time the only true friend was her diary. She said, “I don’t want to set down a series of facts in a diary as most people do, but I want this diary itself to be my friend, and I shall call my friend Kitty.” Now read how she felt after being in the hiding place since July 1942. Dear kitty, I wonder if it’s because I haven’t been able to be outdoors for so long that I’ve grown so crazy about everything to do with nature. I can well remember that there was a time when a deep blue sky, the song of the birds, moonlight and flowers could never have kept me spellbound. That’s changed since I was here. …For example, when it was so warm, I stayed awake on purpose until half past eleven one evening in order to have a good look at the moon for once by myself. But as the moon gave far too much light, I didn’t dare open a window. Another time some months ago, I happened to be upstairs one evening when the window was open. I didn’t go downstairs until the window had to be shut. The dark, rainy evening, the wind, the thundering clouds held me entirely in their power; it was the first time in a year and a half that I’d seen the night face to face… …Sadly…I am only able to look at nature through dirty curtains hanging before very du sty windows. It’s no pleasure looking through these any longer because nature is one thing that really must be experienced. Yours, Anne Reading and writing Miss Wang has received a letter from Xiaodong. He is also asking for some advice. Read the letter on the right carefully and help Miss Wang answer it.

关系代词有that, which, who,whom,whose,as等;关系副词有when,where,why等。 The car which my uncle had just bought was destroyed in the earthquake.句中,the car 为先行词;which是关系词引导是定语从句which my uncle had just bought,同时代替先行词the car在定语从句中作主语。 1. that指人时,相当于who或whom;指物时,相当于which。 He said he was a Frenchman,which/as was not true. As is known to all,China is a socialist country. China is a socialist country, as/which is known to all. 2. I don't know the foreigner with whom my teacher shook hands.(或I don't know the foreigner whom my teacher shook hands with.)

M1U1S C H O O L l i f e i n t h e U K Going to a British high school for one year was a very enjoyable and exciting experience for me. I was very happy with the school hours in Britain because school starts around 9 a.m. and ends about 3.30 p.m. This means I could get up an hour later than usual as schools in China begin before 8 a.m. On the first day, all of the new students attended an assembly in the school hall. I sat next to a girl whose name is Diane. We soon became best friends. During the assembly, the headmaster told us about the rules of the school. He also told us that the best way to earn respect was to devote oneself to study and achieve high grades. This sounded like my school in China. I had many teachers in the past year. Mr. Heywood , my class teacher, was very helpful. My favorite teacher was Miss Burke—I loved the lessons that she gave in English Literature. In our class there were 28 students. This is about the average size for British schools. We had to move to different classrooms for different classes. We also had different students in some classes, so it was a struggle for me to remember all the faces and names. I found the homework was not as heavy as what I used to get in
