A

The boss of a big company needed to call one of his employees about an urgent problem with one of the main computers. He dialed the employee's home phone number and was greeted with a child's whisper, “Hello?”

Feeling it was inconvenient to talk to a youngster, the boss asked, “Is your daddy home?”

“Yes,” whispered the small voice.

1

To the surprise of the boss, the small voice whispered, “No.”

Wanting to talk with an adult, the boss asked, “Is your mommy there?”

“Yes,” came the answer.

“May I talk with her?”

2

Knowing that it was not likely that a young child would be left home alone, the boss decided he would just leave a message with the person who should be there watching over the child.

“Is there any one there besides you?” the boss asked the child.

3

Wondering what a policeman would be doing at his employee's home, the boss asked, “May I speak with the policeman?”

“No, he is busy,” whispered the child.

4

“Talking to Daddy and Mommy and the fireman,” came the whispered answer.

Growing concerned and even worried as he heard what sounded like a helicopter through the earpiece on the phone the boss asked, “What is that noise?”

“A hello-copper,” answered the whispering voice.

5

In a low whispering voice the child answered, “The search team just landed the hello-copper!”

Alarmed, concerned and more than just a little frustrated the boss asked, “The search team?! Why are they there?”

Still whispering, the young voice replied, “They are looking for me!”

A. “Busy doing what?” asked the boss.

Most people who travel to another country to work or study for a significant period of time go through an adjustment period to the new culture. The amount of disorientation (迷惘) one feels in the new situation depends on one's own background and experiences.

Culture shock is the sudden loss of the familiar, which leads to a sense of isolation (孤单) and less self-importance. 1 Later, you may feel that the differences between your home country and those countries you are visiting are huge and frustrating.

The effects of culture shock range from mild uneasiness to acute unhappiness. To reduce such effects, you may follow these tips.

·Be prepared. Be aware that it exists and that it will probably affect you in one way or another.

·Know yourself. 2 Your responses to situations and people in the new culture will make more sense if you have a clear idea of what is important to you personally.

·Be calm and accepting. Understand that this is a learning process and that you will benefit from it.

·Be positive. Sometimes with a change of perspective, frustrating circumstances can be humorous and interesting. 3

·Set goals and stay busy. Don't sit around being sad and critical. Be adventurous, make plans and try new things.

·Avoid isolation. Don't keep yourself separate from people of the same cultural background. Don't complain about your experience. 4 They can offer you good advice and comfort.

·5 Hold on to your own personal sense of humor, which will help you deal with possibly frustrating and confusing situations. Often the first sign of recovery from culture shock is the reappearance of one's sense of humor.

A. Keep a sense of humor.

B. Try not to be overly critical.

C. Try to find people who have gone through this experience.

D. Clarify your own values and examine your own assumptions.

E. Sometimes changing to a new culture has an immediate effect.

F. Expect to suffer from culture shock when you return to your home culture.

G. When you first arrive in a new culture, you feel a sense of excitement and expectation.

Hot dogs

Hot dogs! Hot dogs! Come get your hot dogs! This variation on a German sausage has become extremely popular in America. It is a popular concession (特许物) sold at America's most beloved sporting events, baseball games. It is beloved by many. 1 Hot dogs are also very popular during summer cookouts, where people get together and they cook food outside on a grill.

Sausage, the main part of a hot dog, has been around since the 9th century B.C. It was first mentioned in The Odyssey, an epic poem (史诗) by the Greek poet, Homer. But, the type of sausage used in a hot dog, is called a frankfurter, and it originated in the 13th century, in Germany. 2

Later on, in about 1871, Charles Feltman, a German butcher, came up with the idea of putting a frankfurter sausage in the middle of a milk roll. He had a food stand in Coney Island (a popular tourist attraction with many amusement parks in Brooklyn, New York) and the hot dogs sold very well. 3

There are many different kinds of hot dogs out there, such as the Chicago Dog (beef hot dog topped with small pieces of onions, tomato slices, and sweet sauce). 4 Sometimes, in my family, when we feel like making a simple dinner, we'll take out the mini grill to make hot dogs. We have a long standing tradition of putting every condiment (佐料) in the refrigerator on top of our hot dogs. Out of all the hot dogs we've made, my favorite is the hot dog with everything on top. 5 It may be messy. Have fun and make your own hot dog! Eat and enjoy!

A. And so, an American tradition was born.

B. Note, do not wear a white shirt while eating.

C. Americans love it because it's easy and delicious.

D. Then, German immigrants brought the sausage to America.

E. The hot dog consists of a grilled or boiled sausage between a sliced roll.

F. A hot dog at a ballgame beats roast beef at a famous and expensive hotel.

G. Even with all these hot dog styles, you can still make your favorite hot dog.

D

Managing your time is a lot like managing your money. 1 With 24 hours a day multiplied by seven days a week, your weekly time budget is 168 hours per week.

Step No. 1: 2

Estimate (估计) the amount of time per week you spend on each activity, such as class time, athletics fitness, socializing with friends and other hobby time and so on.

Step No. 2: Assess your use of time.

a) Add together the total time you will use per week.

b) Now subtract (减去) the total time from 168 hours.

If the number you get is negative, you have used more time than there is in a week. You should cut back in certain areas.

If you have time left over, ask yourself what choices can be

made. 3 Volunteering? Friends? If your time used equals 168, great! Now take a look at any hours you may be spending in some areas that you want to start using in other ways.

Step No. 3: Determine a goal and plan of action for better time use.

What would you most like to do to better manage your time? You should consider using a calendar or planner

Some tips: Color-code your calendar or planner by the activities listed above, and once you make a schedule, do your best to stick with it.

Step No. 4: 5

You'll want to take a look at this again at the start of each term, if you get a job, or if you notice any changes in your physical or emotional condition.

Besides, it is advisable to make a long-term goal in the first year and work towards it in the very beginning.

A. You are in trouble.

B. This is a good start.

C. Repeat, when necessary.

D. Do you have time for more sleep?

E. Figure out how you use your time each week.

F. Once you spend it, it's gone, so you have to make it all count.

G. It can help you keep track of time, projects, tasks and be more efficient.

根据本空前的what choices can be made可知,D项符合此处语境,同时也与本空后的Volunteering和Friends构成并列。

You'll want to take a look at this again可知,这一步是建议大家“在有必要的情况下,重复以上步骤”。

Bud went to an all-white high school in a beautiful, all-white neighborhood. There were very few big buildings in his community. As a matter of fact, you would have to walk four or five blocks to get to the nearest shopping center. 2 In his basement, he had a complete mini-gym. In his bedroom, he had a nice desk, complete with reference books and his own little TV on which he could play his video games. 3 My family lived in a nice apartment in an all-black housing project. Our project housed many families, so we were used to living in small crowded houses. 4 There were all kinds of stores nearby. For beauty, we had basketball courts and the rose garden in front of the project building. We were never jealous or looked down on one another, either. We both felt we had lost something because we lived in worlds set apart from others. Bud's only contact (接触) with blacks of his age was in the All-City Chorus. 5 And it was not as interesting as it would have been if he had grown up with people of different groups and races living together.
