Unit 3 美国人的挚爱

1我父亲是别克一族。在经济大萧条之前,他开的是斯杜兹车。但由于那次经济上悲剧性的转折,同其他千千万万努力上进、四处奔波的人们一样,父亲在汽车品味上面临重大的调整。直到他去世的那一天,他开的别克车不仅仅是普通的交通工具,还给他在社会等级结构中定了位—比开蓬迪艾克车的人富一些,但还赶不上开卡迪拉克车的人—并且在整个社会环境中,他所驾驶的车能立刻显示出其身份,驾驶福特车和克莱斯勒车的人们也一样。

2这种来之不易并被高度重视的对车的忠诚,为我们美国人所喜欢的那种与车之间的特殊联系,构筑了坚如磐石的基础。这就是爱吗?这个词可能有矫揉造作之嫌,但是美国人对车的恭敬胜于一切—不仅把它看作20世纪滚动的雕塑,也看作社会的护身符。我记得父亲的第一辆别克车是一辆乌黑程亮的轿车,配有厚厚的马海毛椅套和新式的无级变速杆。父亲喜欢吹嘘说它每小时可以行驶120英里。一想到它的速度就足以让人感到振奋,并且也为我把这辆漂亮的车叫做“黑美人”增加了可信度,这个名字取自家中菲尔克牌(注:Philco 指菲尔克牌收音机:Green Hormet格林·霍奈特是当时菲尔克牌收音机播出的一个广播节目中主人公的名字)收音机播出的格林·霍奈特驾驶的那辆神秘车的名字。

3与本世纪极大地改变人类生活条件的电话、电视或个人电脑不同的是,车享有如人一般的地位。有些车成为了家庭成员、机械宠物。我们给它们起名字,在车道上精心打扮它们,出故障时诅咒创门,以旧车换新车时,我们为失去它们而感到伤心不已。

4这种对车的挚爱让环保论者、安全生活倡导者及社会问题专家感到烦恼,他们认为通向天堂之路已严严实实覆盖着公共交通的闪闪发光的轨道,他们幻想着我们挤在未来的自行车上,而不是坐在如一些狂热的批评家所谴责的“傲慢的战车”的方向盘后。这种态度已不新鲜。最初由铁路,继而由汽车所代表的流动性从根本上动摇了特权阶层的地位,在战场上骁勇善战的威灵顿公爵就以蔑视平民大众而著称,150年前他反对发展英国的铁路系统,理由是火车“只能鼓励普通百姓进行不必要的流动”。由于人们公认汽车正以可恶的速度污染环境,致人伤亡,使人流离失所,因此,他们被清除出地球的速度越快越好(并把凌乱的购物中心、“免下车”餐馆及劣质食品店等统统一起带走)。

5汽车确实罪行累累,但是批评家们却故意忽略了它是一个伟大的解放者这一事实。随着数百万人寻找更好的经济机遇,汽车使得人们进行大规模的迁移,从城市涌向郊区,从东

部涌向西部,从南部涌向北部,最近又从北部涌回南部。一些不断向周边地区扩展的大都市的新建筑群—洛杉矶、奥兰多、亚特兰大、夏洛特、达拉斯、拉斯维加斯、菲尼克斯—已拔地而起,其规划布局是按照为汽车提供一定的空间而设计的,其布局还不够完善(还未研制出公共交通的替代品),但摆在我们面前的事实是这种大规模的增长正在受到以汽车为中心兴建起来的西部和南部城市的欢迎。尽管环保论者坐立不安,广大民众却一如既往地驱车行进。

6美国有1亿7500万取得了驾驶执照的司机,驾驶着近两亿辆各种机动车,往返于390多万英里长的公路与街道上。他们跳上自己的小汽车,或轻型货车,或摩托车,或旅宿汽车,或跑车,每年行驶大约2.4兆英里。公路上,每年都会新增大约1500万崭新的小轿车及轻

型货车,改装赛车比赛是这个国家发展最快的运动,汽车业雇佣工人的人数超过其它任何制造业,达230万。

7无庸置疑,汽车给人类带来了危害,但车体结构(门楣)、乘客用安全袋(安全气囊)和车闸(盘式制动器、防抱死制动系统)等方面的最新进展使其安全性能大大提高。过去30年中,每行驶1亿英里的死亡人数已由5.3人下降到1.7人(该项统计包括公用道路上的所有车辆所造成的死亡人数,如农用机械、卡车、摩托车、自行车等)。

8的确,汽车污染了空气,但燃料质量、功效与微处理发动技术的提高已大大削减了有害气体的排放。据专家估计,道路上仅有10%的汽车—那些调试不良、年久失修的车辆—排放的有害气体高达50%。如果把它们从公路上清除出去的话,那么汽车就有可能不再是制造污浊空气的主要因素。

9是的,是汽车造成了城市的扩张和西海岸到东海岸的高速公路的堵塞。事实是由于豆荚似的(注:podlike豆荚似的,这里比喻一条条线路的公共汽车如豆荚状,按一定的线路行驶,常常不能直接到达目的地,中途需要转车。)公共交通的局限性,数百万开车人不愿放弃移动的自由(尽管有时很慢)。一位开着宝马车、每日从威彻斯特郊区开车进入曼哈顿交通堵塞的咽喉要道的上班族说:“一日当中唯有开车时我可以独处,并且完全支配自己的命运,就通行费及停车费而言,它贵得惊人,而且确实它可能会很慢且令人沮丧。但那是我的选择,重要的是在这个世界上,自己能做的选择已经越来越少。”

10这样的言论可能会激怒反对汽车的群体。但愿人们能乘坐政府经深思熟虑后提供的公共汽车或火车!但愿人们能做到行为得体!那才是问题的关键。现代汽车正处于无政府状态,它给予人类如此的自由:除非对国家的城市进行重新规划,并且完全禁止车辆在广袤的大地上行使,否则汽车仍是现代生活中不可或缺的。即使所有的路面都遭到破坏,所有的车库被夷为平地,所有的加油站都关闭停业,汽车可能也会变得适应性更强,并依然是个人交通的主要工具。最基本的理念是要合法。

11既然魔仆已冲出樊笼,我们所面临的挑战就是要尽可能去驯服它,使汽车与生活在全国各地逐年增长的人口融为一体。在计划与审慎之间需要认真做好平衡。在任何自由、高科技社会中,汽车将仍然是主要的个人交通工具。如何利用有限的资源将汽车更好地纳入全球生态系统,还是一个不太容易解决的问题。但首先恐怕得承认,对于汽车,无论是喜欢还是讨厌,汽车仍将继续存在。

Leading In and Exploring the Topic Divide the class into groups of four and allow the Ss 5 minutes to finish the exercise in Exploring the Topic. Give the Ss 5 minutes to discuss the following two questions: 1) What do you intend to choose as a career in the future and why? 2) How will you prepare yourself for your future career? Ask some volunteers to share their answers to the above question with the class.
