Few builders or scientists can describe what the house of the future might be like. But Grace can tell you. Grace is a talking house. Her high-tech parts and creative uses of everyday things along with advantages in design will change the way we think about our homes –and live in them. Grace isn‘t the only one study how technology (技术) can make our homes more safe, comfortable and fun. Here are some best ideas of home.

Grace is not a real house. More exactly known as the Microsoft Home, she is set inside an office building in Redmond, Washington. But once inside, it‘s easy to imagine you‘re in a future home.

Picture this: You enter the house, and Grace‘s voice, from unseen speakers, retells your messages. In the kitchen, you put down a bag of flour (面粉) on the top of a stone table. Grace sees what you‘re doing and projects a list of flour-based food on the tabletop. Once you choose one, Grace tells a list of ingredients (配料). There‘s also a notice board in the kitchen that works like a computer. You can stick up postcards or invitations and look through the Internet with a finger (手指).

―The day when your home will be like a family member is not that far off,‖ says Pam Heath, a leader at Microsoft. This technology is everywhere yet nowhere (except when we want it). At the Andersen window company in Minnesota, new technology leader, Jay Libby, shows windows made of smart glass that can be changed into a television. ―Nobody wants a TV set,‖ says Libby. ―You want the service it provides.‖ If he gets his way, the term ―picture window‖ will be used instead of usual television.

Home entertainment (娱乐) is just one consideration. At the Georgia University of Technology in Atlanta, scientists are designing systems (系统) that will allow older people to continue living alone. So Grandma‘s home can be of different parts, such as waking, sleep and movement;any changes of family members would be noticed by computers.

If we‘re going to live in our houses longer, they‘ll need to be more flexible (可变的). The Partnership for Advancing Technology in Housing (PATH) is working on houses that can be easily rebuilt. ―As family changes, we want to achieve that, so older parents aren‘t stuck with a house made for four kids,‖ says PATH engineer Glen Salas.

53. What is Grace, in fact?

A. A new kind of house in future.

B. A company to make houses.

C. A scientist who designs houses.

D. A built-in computer system.

54. Who probably invented ―picture windows‖?

A. Andersen.

B. Libby.

C. Heath.

D. Salas.

55. Future homes will be like a family member because .

A. they can make us safe and comfortable

B. they can offer to help us when possible

C. they can look after us in many ways

D. they can do everything a real person does

56. Which of the following can be the greatest character of future houses?

A. Fit for their owners‘ need only.

B. Flexible for all kinds of uses.

C. Useful to anybody at any time.

D. Similar to somebody we know.

If you‘ve ever shopped on the Internet or played a game on your mobile (移动的) phone, you‘ve used the computer language, named Java that James Gosling co-invented. Java‘s great success, however, didn‘t come at all as he had imagined it would.

Gosling and his workmates at Sun Microsystems developed Java in the early 1990s and wanted to sell the program to telephone companies. But when those companies discovered that Java would let their customers (顾客) use a lot of different equipments-not just the ones they provided-they refused the new language.

―You put your heart into something for years, and it dies a sudden death for some stupid (愚蠢的) reasons. You just want to scream (尖叫) into the wind,‖ Gosling says. ―We had built a better mousetrap (捕鼠器) and tried to sell it to people who really liked mice.‖ Still he continued to improve Java. And while telephone companies may have seen the program as something terrible, the new environment of the Internet quickly caught on to its advantages. Java became popular among programmers.

Gosling may have failed first, but he didn‘t stop trying. That‘s not true of many of us, however. Too many people are afraid of failure (失败). Some of us let it keep us from trying new things, telling ourselves we‘d be no good at it. Some lower our goals (目的) to only what we feel completely sure we can be successful. Others among us try something once, and when it doesn‘t work out, we decide that is not for us.

That‘s unfortunate because, according to many top scientists, failure is nothing to fear (害怕). Not only is it inevitable (不可避免的), they say, it is even our close friend. ―In the lab,‖ says Gosling,‖ failure is a good thing. If everything you try is very successful, it means you‘re playing it safe; you‘re not out on the edge. Failure means that you‘re learning.‖

Nobel Prize winner John Polanyi agrees. ―To ask a scientist whether he has experienced failure is like asking an artist whether he has ever made a sketch (素描). The answer is ?a million times‘. That is the price of success. The truth is that after many failures we meet with an unexpected success.‖

53. The telephone companies refused Java because _________.

A. they were afraid to lose the customers

B. they didn‘t want to change their equipments

54. Who did Java become popular among at last?

A. Computer producers.

B. Program designers.

C. Mobile phone owners.

D. E-shop customers.

55. What is unfortunate according to the writer?

A. It‘s difficult for Gosling to become successful.

B. Others don‘t have as many failures as Gosling.

C. It took a long time for us to understand failure.

D. Many are afraid of failure and won‘t try hard.

56. The conclusion (结论) we can draw from the last two paragraphs (段落) is that ________.

A. if you‘re not afraid, failure will become nothing

B. one should like failure much better than success

C. every time we try something, we will fail first

D. failures are natural and important toward success

Think of all the things you throw away: juice bottles, soda cans, candy covers. It adds up. How much rubbish do you produce? Americans throw away about 1 ton of rubbish per person every year. That‘s 2,000 pounds (907 kilograms) of rubbish! Most of this rubbish gets covered in big holes in the ground called landfills(垃圾掩埋).

A lot of this rubbish can be recycled, or turned back into something useful. The main things we recycle today are made from metal, paper or glass.

People recycle for many reasons. One of the main reasons is to protect resources. Making new cans out of old ones means less aluminum(铝)is needed for new cans.

The leads to a second reason people recycle: It saves energy. Recycling old aluminum cans takes much less energy than making new aluminum. To make new aluminum, you need to mine metal ore(矿石)from the ground, remove it, and refine it into a finished metal.

Recycling also protects valuable land. By recycling, we produce less rubbish. That means fewer landfills are needed for dropping our rubbish.

Because metals are somewhat costly to make, they are t he world‘s most recycled materials. About two—thirds of all steel(钢)is recycled.

Almost all drink cans are made of aluminum. Americans recycle about one—third of their used aluminum cans. Empty cans are sent to special factories. There, they are cleaned, melted, and made into new pieces of aluminum.

Americans use lots of paper—mostly in the form of newspapers, magazines, and cardboard boxes. In fact, paper takes up more space in landfills than any other material.

Old paper can be cut and made into new paper. Americans recycle a little more than one-third of their paper rubbish. New paper is made from trees. Each ton of recycled paper saves about 17 trees!

Glass can be recycled, too. Americans recycle less than one—quarter of the glass they use. Perhaps that is because recyclers must take more work to recycle glass. First, only bottle glass can be melted and made into new glass. Second, different colors of glass must be melted separately. This means bottles must be separated by color before they can be recycled.

55. The passage is mainly about ____________.

A. reasons of recycling

B. advantages of recycling

C. difficulties of recycling

D. different kinds of recycling

56. Which of the following is not the reason for people to recycle?

A. To protect resources

B. To save energy

C. To protect land

D. To save lives

57. Which of the following is the most difficult to recycle?

A. Metal

B. Glass

C. Paper

D. Land

58. What should be the writer‘s feeling to recycling according to the passage?

A. He supports it and calls for it

B. He wants to help but can do little

C. He feels disappointed and gives up

D. He thinks it‘s useful but difficult

Try to imagine what life would be like if there were no electric lights, no television, or no cars. What if you had no running water to take a shower and no refrigerator to keep your food cold? Life would be hard without these great inventions.

Since ancient times, people have been inventing new machines, materials, and ways of doing things. The people who come up with new things are called inventors. Sometimes an inventor makes an invention to solve a problem. Sometimes an inventor discovers something new by accident.

Everyone probably has his or her favorite inventions. One great invention was the printing press. A German named Johannes Gutenberg in the 1400s invented a press that made it easy to print books. Books became much more common after the invention of the printing press. The books helped other inventors make new things.

The invention of the steam engine around 1700 led to the Industrial Revolution(工业革命). Inventors made many new machines that were powered by steam engines. They invented locomotives(机车), steamboats, and all kinds of factor machines.

Another great invention, the internal engine, led to the invention of automobiles in the late 1800s. Inventors made better and better internal engines. These are the engines we use today in cars, trucks, buses, and airplanes.

The discovery of electricity led to many wonderful inventions. Many scientists studied electricity. An American inventor named Thomas A. Edison invented the electric lamp, phonograph (留声机), and other things that ran on electricity in the late 1800s.

New things are invented today faster than ever before. Inventors are making new kitchen tools, toys, computers, video games, telephones, and all kinds of other things.

The ways people invent things have changed over time. No one knows the names of the earliest inventors. Until the 1900s, most inventors worked alone. Some of them became well-known for their inventions all around the world. Today, most inventions come from scientists and engineers who work in teams. The teams work in big research labs. Most of today‘s inventors work for universities, government agencies, or big companies.

Plants and animals, including humans, need food and water to live on. These are from the natural resources(资源)on Earth. To protect these resources, we need to keep the air clean and the water drinkable. We need to keep the soil(土壤)healthy. How do we do that?

Protect the land

The soil that covers fields and farms provides much of the food we eat. Human activities such as plowing(耕)fields, mining(采矿), and building highways can destroy(破坏)the land. Erosion happens when wind and water carry away the soil. Soil erosion can turn rich farmland into a desert wasteland. So does this mean we shouldn‘t build a highway or plow a field? Of course not. But it does mean we might think about Earth—friendly ways of doing those things.

Today farmers plow their fields in different ways to prevent erosion. They try to use less water for their crops. They keep animals from eating the growing grass in just one area. Farmers also plant trees to prevent erosion from happening.

Save the Trees

Another human activity that damages the land is deforestation(采伐森林). People take away a large number of trees from a forest. Millions of square kilometers of forest disappear each year. When this happens, many plants and animals lose their places to live. They may die out, or become very few. Scientists haven‘t e ven discovered all the living things in the forest. We may be losing some without even knowing they are there. Trees absorb(吸收)and use carbon dioxide(二氧化碳)when they make food. Environmentalists encourage careful management of the forests. They ask people to replant trees after they cut down the forest.

Recycle, Reuse, Reduce

People throw a piece of paper into the wastebasket after using it. The paper becomes trash. Where does the trash go next? Much of our trash ends up in landfills(垃圾填埋地). They take up valuable land and sometimes pollute the water, air, and land around them. More than a third of the trash in landfills is paper. Recycling, reusing, and reducing what you throw away can cut down on the need for more landfills. In fact, we can recycle about eighty percent of household trash.

Do you live in a rural area or in an urban area? What do the words rural and urban mean? The context (语境) in which these two words are used may give you something that helps you find their meanings. But if the context does not tell you enough, what can you do? If you decide to use a dictionary, you are halfway to finding the meaning of a word. The problem is completely over when

you find rural and urban in the dictionary and the definition, or meaning, of each that fits the context in which the word is used.

Words-each one called an entry word-are easy to find in the dictionary. You need only to remember that they are listed in alphabetical order (字母表的顺序). Notice the guide words in the upper right-hand corner of the sample dictionary page. They are the first and last entry words on the page. Guide words help you find out whether the entry word you want is on that page.

Many words that have endings or suffixes are not listed as entry words. If you want to find the meaning of a word like anxiousness, you need to find the root word (词根) anxious. The root word is the one to look up for words having endings or suffixes added to them.

All that is written about an entry word is known as the entry for that word. An entry includes the pronunciation of the entry word, one of more definitions, and sometimes one or more illustrative (作例证的) sentences or phrases. Some entries also appear with a picture that shows one of the definitions.

53. Sometimes we find the meaning of a word by ___________.

A. understanding the context

B. translating it into several languages

C. remembering its order in the list

D. finding the meaning in the same book

54. An entry word is a word that ___________.

A. you can find its meaning in the dictionary

B. you write in a book and fit it in the right order

C. has a special meaning according to it spelling

D. needs a root and a suffixes to have some meanings

55. According to the passage, words with endings are ___________.

A. difficult to understand

B. not explained in the dictionary

C. added to the root words

D. not found as entry words

56. What is the best title for the text?

A. Using a dictionary.

B. Finding a good dictionary.

C. Setting up good context for a new word.

D. Writing an entry word in the dictionary for yourself.

Winter Blues

It‘s November. The days are getting shorter and the nights longer. And Mary, in London, is eating more, sleeping more, and feeling depressed(忧郁的). In February, things become worse for her, but by April, Mary is back to normal. This pattern repeats itself year after year. Mary is not alone. There are others who have the same problem all over the world—anywhere, in fact, where winter days are shorter and nights are longer.

Researchers believe that Mary, and millions like her, suffer from a condition they call ―Seasonal Affective Disorder‖(SAD for short). This condition is a kind of depression that comes with decreases in light exposure(暴露). They feel tired, depressed and easily get annoyed or angry. They eat so much that they gain weight. SAD, say the researchers, can influence anyone but most often influences women.

Fortunately, there are treatments for SAD. If the problem is not serious, people may improve just by brightening the rooms in their house and getting exposure to more sunlight. Many people with more serious cases can feel better with a new light treatment. With this treatment, SAD sufferers get between 30 minutes to a few hours a day of extra exposure to a special light(one that is five to twenty times brighter than typical indoor lighting). By increasing their exposure to either natural or manmade light, about 75% of people with SAD get better.

Medical researchers tell people not to self-diagnose(自我诊断). SAD, they say, is a serious condition. A person with SAD follows the same pattern each year. He or she has depressions every winter, and things get back to normal in spring and summer. If you feel sad and easily get annoyed o nce in a while during the winter, you probably don‘t have SAD.

The new light treatment is changing the lives of people like Mary. Mary can now enjoy the seasonal changes, just as most of us do.

This is the times of information technology. Pakistan(巴基斯坦)is also trying to keep up with this IT development and special steps are being taken to spread the Internet all over the country.

This is considered as a great achievement and it is. But here is a question whether our people know the use of the Internet for development purpose. It is a fact that the ratio(比率)of informative and educational sites is very low.

What do many of them do in Pakistan when people surf the Internet? They use it mostly for entertainment. Many students spend a lot of time and money in surfing the Internet. They do chatting or visit other entertainment sites. It is surprising to read that bys and girls go to the Internet cafes and spend many hours daily in just chatting. Just join any Pakistani chat room at any site, and you will know that what is the level(水平)of language and which type of language mostly our people use in chatting. The number of the web addicts in our country is increasing day by day.

It is also a fact that many people including teenagers visit sites unsuitable. One can imagine that they are becoming worse and they are becoming addicted to such things that are very harmful(有害的)to them. They are taking all the disadvantages from the Internet.

Students do use the Internet for education purpose. But there are also several disadvantages. Students normally surf more on the Internet than teachers. It happens several times that a teacher gives some work to students and they get it from the Internet, copy it and present it to the teacher, who many times is unable to know what is copied from the Internet. In this way students are giving up the habit of reading books. They just open sites, copy the information and finish the homework that they do not even read. However, a very good advantage of the Internet for students is that those who want to seek knowledge can get information very quickly and read many books by famous foreign authors which are very expensive to buy.

The Internet itself is a very useful and important tool of development nowadays, but it is really sad that in Pakistan people are mostly misusing it. Those who use it for development purpose are still very few.

54. What is the article mainly about?

A. The development of IT in Pakistan.

B. The very useful and important tool in Pakistan.

C. The worrying situation of using the Internet in Pakistan.

D. The advantages and disadvantages of the Internet in Pakistan.

55. What do the underlined words ―web addicts‖ in paragraph 3 mean?

A. Students whose level of language in chatting is very low.

B. People who are not able to free themselves from the Internet.

C. Entertainment sites of the Internet which are harmful to teenagers.

D. Internet cafes where boys and girls spend too much time in chatting.

56. The writer‘s purpose in writing this article is _________ in Pakistan.

A. to encourage readers to keep up with the IT development

B. to advise readers to use proper language in chatting rooms

C. to ask readers to pay attention to the problem in using the Internet

D. to stop readers from going to the Internet cafes or misusing the Internet

Have you ever dreamt about the day you can buzz(嗡嗡作响)around in your very own flying machine? Well, that day may be sooner than you think.

The people at NASA have built something called ―The Highway in the Sky.‖ It‘s a computer system(系统)designed(设计)to let millions of people fly whenever they please, and take off and land from wherever they please, in their very own vehicles(运载工具). And here‘s the good news –a lot of people are building machines you‘ll be able to buy.

One of those people is Woody Norris, inventor of a new personal flying machine called the AirScooter. Norris asked one of his test pilots(飞行员)to show us the AirSoccter on a hilltop in California. It can fly for 2 hours at 55 miles per hour, and go up to 10,000 feet.

A lot of inventors have tried to cash in on personal flying machines, but they failed to catch on because they were too expensive and hard to fly in bad weather. More important, there was no way to manage all the traffic from millions of them buzzing around – that is, until n ow, thanks to ―The Highway in the Sky.‖

Here‘s how it works: You watch one main screen, almost like a videogame. Keep the plane inside the box, away from other vehicles, and the plane‘s computers do the work of flying where you want to go. This $130-milli on program can also help pilots fly in bad weather. It‘s a breakthrough that will some day allow more people to fly than ever before.

All this new technology(技术)has given new life to the race to build the personal flying machine of tomorrow. What kind of inventions are people working on today? If you can imagine it, someone‘s trying it, everything from machines that can fly straight up and down to ones that can go very fast.

In Texas one inventor is testing the CarterCopter. It can fly straight up and down like a helicopter(直升机), but can go as fast as an airplane, too. Even the cows are surprised when they see it!

If you‘re interested in something smaller, a strange-looking flying machine called the Springtail is a 21st Century flying backpack. When it ta kes off, it‘s loud and makes a lot of wind, but the inventors say it‘s designed to fly for two hours, at 90 miles per hour, 400 feet above the ground.

AirScooter inventor Woody Norris, like many of the inventors that we‘ve met, believes today‘s planes wil l soon become old and useless, and that ―The Highway in the Sky‖ will be filled with flying machines that we can‘t even begin to imagine.

55. The future flying machine will be able to fly _______.

A. without pilots

B. inside a box

C. from a highway

D. like a helicopter

56. According to what mentioned in the passage, _______ can fly higher.

A. A NASA invention

B. Norris‘s invention

C. The CarterCopter

D. The Springtail

57. The underlined words cash in mean ―_______‖.

A. invent

B. sell

C. make money

D. save money

58. Which would be the best title?

A. Planes on the High Way

B. Flying Cars Ready to Take off

C. High Way in the Future

D. Traffic Problem to be Solved

I read yesterday (yes, on a blog) that there are now blogging competitions!! I can‘t believe it. A man in England won $2,000 for writing the best blog. There‘s even a list of the best Chinese bloggers! I‘ve read a few of them- before they were famous, I might add. I suppose that one blog can be better than another. It can be better written, more interesting, funnier, and I suppose that blogs are there to be read and judged (点评) by other people. If they‘re not good, they‘re not read. And they‘re not just personal feelings. If they were, they‘d be called diaries. Have locks, and be hidden under beds. So I‘m OK with this whole competition thing. I just can‘t believe I didn‘t win!

This has got me thinking about why I‘m writing this blog. I‘m not doing it to win a competition (or I wasn‘t when I started …) and I‘m not doing it to show all my personal feelings – I do that in my diary. So, why am I a blogger?

To tell the truth, the first time I heard the word blog I thought it was a new word for a toilet. But I love learning new words so I used my knowledge and found out that a blog was a personal website and the word blog came from the words web log. Now a log is a type of diary kept by sailors (水手), and web, well, we all know that it has nothing to do with catching flies and

everything to do with the Internet. Web log… weblog… blog…. B eing a writer I loved the idea of getting my views (观点)onto the Internet where anyone could read them, and no editors (编辑) could get their hands on them!

So my first reason for blogging: I‘m a writer. I want people to read what I write (un-edited!). And I love writing about anything I choose. I can write about saving the environment or complain about how the people in front of me in the cinema always seem to have big heads. And sometimes I pour out my heart too.

My second reason is that it‘s relaxing. I don‘t have to do research and write an article. I can let my thoughts go on as long as I like.

Third reason? To keep in touch. I‘m terrible on the phone and all my friends around the world read my blog (or they say they do …). Every now and then, I even up load a photo so they remember what I look like.

Is there a fourth reason? There probably is but now it‘s time for dinner. Tomorrow I might even tell you what I ate.

55. The writer thinks a good blog is one that _____________.

A. can let his thought go freely

B. wins a blogging competition

C. helps people keep in touch

D. is read by large numbers of people

56. The writer loves writing blogs mainly because __________.

A. his writing about feeling can be shown anywhere

B. his writing would never be edited by others

C. he enjoys writing something about big events

D. he finds himself terrible on the phone

57. There‘re __________reasons in the passage to explain why the writer is a blogger.

A. 2

B. 3

C. 4

D. 5

58. This passage is _________.

A. a blog about blogging

B. a diary about blogging

C. a view on blogging

D. a judgment on blogging

12

A ―blogger‖ is a person who writes on an Internet computer web site called a ―blog‖. The word ―blog‖ is a short way of saying web log (网络日志),or personal web site. Anyone can start a blog, and they can write about anything they like.

There are millions of blogs on the Internet today. They provide news, information and ideas to many people who read them. They have links to other web sites. And they provide a place for people to write their ideas and talk about the ideas of others.

A research company called Perseus has studied more than 3,000 web logs. It says that blogs are most popular with girls. They use them to let their friends know what is happening in their life. The study also says that more than 100,000 bloggers stopped taking part in the activity after a year.
