It’s not easy to learn math well. Students need to remember many formulas and do lots of math exercises. Beginning this fall semester(学期), many students in the United Kingdom are going to learn math in the way Chinese students do.

In August, a whole set of Shanghai’s primary(小学) school math textbooks, Real Shanghai Maths《真正上海数学》, went on the UK’s book market. There are 36 books, including a Teacher Guide, Textbook and Pupil Practice Book for each grade (1-6), according to Xinhua. The books are translated word-for-word from the Chinese versions(版本). The only change is the price. The Chinese yuan become the British pound.

This is not the first time the UK has learned from China’s math instruction. Since 2014, the UK has invited many junior and primary school math teachers in Shanghai to teach in its schools. In 2015, the publishing house Collins Learning introduced the practice book One Lesson, One Exercise《一课一练》to Britain. There were 11 books for the 11 grades, from primary school to high school. This is because the UK doesn’t want their students to fall behind. In the 2012 Program for International Student Assessment (国际学生评估项目), Shanghai students were No 1 in math. British students, however, were No 26.

“This will help young people be prepared for further study,” said Nick Gibb, minister of Britain’s schools.

A GIF is usually a short funny video repeating only a few seconds. The GIF turned 30 this year, which makes it old in web history. That’s even two years older than the World Wide Web. Ever since the GIF was created(创造) in 1987, it has long been overlooked(忽视). Then smartphones and social media(媒体) have brought it back to our daily lives.

According to David McIntosh from the GIF search service Tenor, the GIF does a better job of showing people’s feelings than short text messages do. “Things like ‘lol’ (laugh out loud) aren’t very expressive (有表现力的),” he told Wired.

The GIF is also a very small file format. This helped it become popular among cellphone users. Because of its popularity, Oxford Dictionaries named “GIF” the word of the year in 2012. Last year, Facebook users sent more than 13 billion (十亿) GIFs, reported Sina News.

There are even search services specifically (专门) for GIFs, such as Tenor and Giphy. If you can’t find anything you like there, just create your own GIF on apps like DSCO and Giphy Cam.
