Our lives become much easier thanks to smartphone apps. However, sometimes problems arise at the same time while we are using them.

In a recent announcement, the Ministry of Education (教育部) said teachers should not use WeChat or QQ messaging apps to give homework or ask parents to grade students’ homework.

Many school teachers in China rely heavily on apps to give homework. The kids have to do their homework looking at a phone screen.

For example, Liu Yanming, a sixth-grade student in Shanghai, usually has to use his mother’s mobile phone to do his homework. The homework is handwritten, photographed and then posted by his teacher to a parent-teacher group on WeChat.

Liu Yong, his father, is afraid that the apps could distract kids by encouraging them to watch something unrelated (无关的) to homework.

“He is just 12 years old, and I do not want to buy him a cell phone,” Liu told China Daily. “I also worry that my son’s eyesight will be damaged from staring at the phone for too long.”

However, Bai Yueping, president of Shanghai Tangzhen Middle School, defended (辩护) using apps for homework. “Parents can understand their kids’ learning situation and supervise (监督) them to finish the homework,” Bai told Xinmin Evening News.

Zhang Siqi, a student from Renmin University of China, has a similar opinion to Bai. “The use of WeChat or QQ to give homework is convenient,” Zhang told Teens. “We’re living in an internet era (时代). It’s unwise (不明智的) to refuse to take advantage of technology.”

Chu Zhaohui, a senior researcher at the National Institute of Education Sciences, believed that it is impossible to ban the use of electronic devices (设备) in the internet era. However, students should use t hem when it’s necessary, when they do listening exercises，for example.

“We don’t want to ban online education models, but they must be used carefully. Modern technologies are good ... but they should not steal the show (喧宾夺主),” he told China Daily.

Superheroes have taken over cinemas for the past 10 years. Superman, Thor, Iron Man, the Black Panther and many more have featured in film series with serious and complex storylines about the end of the universe. However, the makers of Shazam, which came out in China on April 5, have a different take on the superhero movie.

“It’s just a light, funny … action comedy about a boy in a superman’s body,” wrote Owen Gleiberman in his review for Variety magazine.

Billy Batson, the film’s main character, is a 14-year-old who’s spent his life going in and out of foster homes (寄养家庭). One day, on the way to another home, Billy escapes

to the subway and meets a wizard (巫师), who gives him magical powers. Whenever Billy says the magic word –“Shazam” – he changes into an adult-sized man with superhuman powers. These new powers include wisdom, strength, stamina, courage and speed. He can also fly.

But how does Billy use his godlike new superpowers? With the help of his new foster brother, Freddie Freeman, Billy tests his strength like any teenager would do –by breaking the rules. He smashes (砸碎) open a soda machine to get free sodas, tricks his teachers, and even buys beer.

While the film is fun and silly, it also has emotional weight. A major part of the story centers on Billy’s search for his real mother. And later, when he faces the villain ous Dr Thaddeus Sivana, a former misfit (不合群的人) kid himself, Billy realizes that his new powers can’t fix every problem. He also learns that he has something precious to protect – his new family.

“With strong messages about families of all shapes and sizes and the importance of supporting and nurturing young people, Shazam really feels like the movie we need right now,” wrote Rosie Fletcher at the website Den of Geek.

Scientists are always learning about the human brain. Decades ago, experts believed that the brain developed during childhood and then retained that way for life. However, modern studies have shown us that the brain has the ability to continually form new neural（神经的）connections throughout adulthood. A 2010 Swedish study tested two groups of people, one in the range of age 21 through 30 and another between 65 and 80. Remarkably, they found no significant differences in neuroplasticity（神经可塑性）. In other words, this suggests that it’s possible for you to learn new things at any age.

Besides being possible to learn languages, research also suggests that it improves the adult brain in general. In a 2012 Chinese study, experts looked at a group of adults who were learning Mandarin over a nine-month period. They found that these adults showed improved integrity（完整性）in their white matter, the part of the brain that allows neural cells to communicate. The better your neural cells communicate, the easier it will be for you to learn new things.

Why may adults have an easier time learning? Children might be blessed with a naturally high degree of neuroplasticity, but that doesn’t mean learning is necessarily easier for them. In fact, adult brains have a number of great qualities that might actually make learning easier, especially if you take advantage of free learning apps like Mondly.
