Many of China?s post-1980s generation have now become parents.

"RMB 1,000 for the nursery and RMB 5,000 for the kindergarten,” a post on a popular Internet site says. The author explains that it costs RMB 450,000 to raise a child through to the sixth grade. “A whole family?s monthly income is spent on the child ;every minute you have is used earning money for your child; your moods are hugely affected by your child?s; friends, career and fun all belong to your pre-child life; you?d sell your house to get your child into a better school.”

And this, according to sina . com, means a generation of "child slaves" has been created.

With thousands of people blogging in China?s cyber space,a new group of bloggers have made a name for themselves by blogging about raising children. These young parents who regularly blog about their children?s daily lives, exchange tips and post hundreds of cute photos of their toddlers , are divided about whether they are slaves to their children.

Gao Jia,who is about to have a baby, thinks she is a ……slave-to-be”,and looks forward to it. "It?s my responsibility to raise the next generation. ”

Blogger Baobao,on the other hand, thinks she is a "child farmer” rather than a child slave. "I?m raising my child like a farmer planting baby trees”.

Wen Ma,who also writes her own child-raising blog, criticizes the popular Chinese saying "everything we do is for the kids". She continues,"We take both that saying and kids too seriously;for our children?s sake,we cannot be child slaves. It makes us weak.”

Huan Zi doesn?t think child slave correctly describes her generation of parents. "We can be …apartment slaves? because we need an apartment to live in, but it?s our own choice to have

children,” she says “There will come the time when the post-1980s generation finds their own place in life, but being slaves should not be it.”

56. It can be inferred from Paragraph 2 that __________.

A. raising children is far more difficult than many of the post-1980s generation expected

B. raising children is what many of China?s post-1980s generation expected

C. many of China? s post-1980s generation are well prepared to raise children

D. many of China? s post-1980s generation refuse to perform their duty of raising children

57. According to the passage "child slaves” means “__________.”

A. people who are willing to raise children

B. people who employ children as servants

C. people who lose all the money for their children

D. people who sacrifice almost everything they have to raise children

58. Who is likely to be a “child slave” ?

A. Baobao

B. Gao Jia

C. Wen Ma

Reading is thought to be a kind of conversation between the reader and the text. The reader puts questions, as it was, to the text and gets answers. In the light of these he puts further questions, and so on.

For most of the time this “conversation” goes on below the level of consciousness. At times, however, we become aware of it. This is usually when we are running into difficulties, when mismatch is occurring between expectations and meaning. When successful matching is being experienced our questioning of the text continues at the unconscious level.

Different people converse with the text differently. Some stay very close to the words on the page; others take off imaginatively from the words, interpreting, criticizing, analyzing and examining. The former represents a kind of comprehension which is written in the text, while the latter represents higher levels of comprehension. The balance between these is important, especially for advanced readers.

There is another conversation which from our point of view is important, and that has nothing to do with what is read but with how it is read. We call this a “process” convers ation as opposed to a “content” conversation. It is concerned not with meaning but with the strategies we employ in reading. If we are skilled readers, our ability to hold a content conversation with a text is usually pretty well developed. Not so our abil ity to hold a process conversation. It is just this kind of conversation that is of importance when we are seeking to develop our reading to meet the new demands being placed upon us by studying at a higher level.

59. Reading as a kind of conversation between the reader and the text becomes conscious

only when ______.

A. the reader’s expectations agree with what is said in the text

D. successful matching is occurring,

60.At a lower level of comprehension, readers tend to _______.

A. read a text slowly

B. read without thinking hard

C. interpret a text in their own way

D. concentrate on the meaning of words only

61. A “process” conversati on has something to do with _______.

A. the development of our ability to check the details

B. determining with the meaning of a text

C. what reading material is read

D. the application of reading strategies

62. From the passage we know________.

A. readers must have conscious and unconscious levels of comprehension

B. readers should take a critical attitude towards the author’s ideas.

C. readers should learn to use different approaches in reading different texts.

D. readers should pay more attention to the content of a text.

C

When I was in high school, I had a recurring(反复的) dream of my teeth falling out. I dreamt about my teeth just about every night for at least three weeks. Sometimes they would fall out one at a time, sometimes all at once. I became terrified that my dreams meant I would actually lose my teeth. Nine years later and about a million trips to the dreams, I still have a full set of teeth, but I’ve learned that when we’re experiencing stress in our lives, it tends to show up in our dreams as well.

Miller says losing teeth indicates burdens that crush your pride. If your teeth are knocked out, you’ll have sudden misfortune. Other explanations for dreams about lost teeth are that the dreamer is feeling powerless in life and may be in a transitional(过度的)period from one situation of life to another. Some experts believe that dreams of losing teeth today show we’re just as insecure and uncertain as we were in childhood.

When I dreamt about my teeth back in high school, I was trying to choose a college— a stressful decision. The dreams resurfaced when college graduation rolled around four years later and I’m sure they’ll start again when I graduate.

A little of stress in our everyday lives is normal. But sometimes it becomes such a regular occurrence in our lives that it influences our dreams and causes us to lose valuable sleep. Understanding our dreams is key to identifying and ending stress in our waking hours and restoring peace to our nighttime hours.
