I shook hands with my father in the truck, and for a long time he looked straight ahead and didn‘t say a word. But I knew he was going to say a little to me. ― I can‘t tell anything,‖ he finally said, ― I never went to college, and none of your brothers went to college. I can‘t say don‘t do this and do that, because everything is different and I don‘t know what is going to come up. I can‘t help much with money either, but I think things will work out.‖

He gave me a new check-book. ―If things get pushing, write a small check. But when you write one, send me a letter and let me know how much. He didn‘t say read this every morning. He just said, ―This can help you if you will let it.‖

Did it help? I got through college without being a burden on the family. I have been able to make money since.

My first performance in front of an audience was coming up soon.

I tried as hard as I could to remain calm, but my heart was racing. I stared down at my sweat-covered, shaking hands.

I looked up again at the audience, realizing that these were real people. They were not just my mum and dad, who would say, ―Good job!‖ even if I messed up the entire piece.

What if I had the wrong music? What if I played the wrong notes?

As it turned out, I was never able to answer these questions because the spotlight(聚光灯)was waiting for me. I grasped my hands tightly together, drying off the sweat.

Slowly I walked to the mud-brown piano in the center of the room. It contained 88 demanding keys, which were waiting impatiently to be played. I swallowed the golf-ball-sized lump(隆起部分)in my throat and sat down. Slowly, I opened the music. Next, I rested my still shaking hands on the ivory(象牙色的)keys.

As my fingers played across the keys, I was becoming more unsure of my preparation for this moment. But the memory of my years of training came flooding back. I knew that I had practised this piece so many times that I could play it backwards if requested.

Although at one point I accidentally played two keys instead of the intended one, I continued to move my fingers automatically.

My eyes burned holes into(were fixed on)the pages in front of me.

There was no way that I was going to lose my concentration. To keep this to myself, I leaned forward and focused carefully on the music.

When I came to the end of the page, a war ning went off inside my head: DON‘T MAKE A MISTAKE WHEN YOU TURN THE PAGE!

Needless to say, I obeyed myself with all my heart and mind. And, proud of my ―page-turning‖ feat(技艺), I finished the rest of the piece without making a single mistake.

After the final note died away, a celebration went into action inside my head. I had finished.

I had mastered the impossible.

Doing a favour for someone could get you into a lot of trouble. I found out this when I was in the eighth grade. At the time we were having a final test. During the test, the girl who was sitting next to me whispered something, but I didn‘t understand. So I leaned over her way and found out that she was trying to ask me for an extra pen. She showed me that hers was out of ink and would not write. I happened to have an extra one, so I took it out of my pocket and put it on her desk.

Later, after we turned in the test papers and were prepared to go home, the teacher asked me to stay in the room. As soon as we were alone she began to talk to me about what it meant to grow up; she talked about how important it was to stand on your own two feet and be responsible for your own acts. For a long time, she talked about honesty and emphasized the fact that when people do something dishonest, they are really cheating themselves. She made me promise that I would think seriously about all the things she had said, and then she told me I could leave. I walked out of the room wondering why she had chosen to talk to me about all those things.

Later on, I found out that she thought I had cheated on the test. When she saw me lean over to talk to the girl next to me, it looked as if I was copying answers from the girl‘s test paper. I tried to explain about the pen, but all she could say was it seemed very strange to her that I hadn‘t talked of a nything about the pen the day she talked to me right after the test. Even if I tried to explain that I was just doing the girl a favour by letting her use my pen, I am sure she continued to believe that I had cheated on the test. Life has taught me that sometimes we just need to mind ourselves well.

Last week my youngest son and I visited my father in his new home in Tucson, Arizona. He moved there a few years ago, and I was eager to see his new place and meet his friends.

My earliest memories of my father are of a tall, handsome successful man devoted to his work and family, but uncomfortable with his children. When it comes to friends, I desire those who will share my happiness, who possess wings of their own and who will fly with me. I seek friends whose qualities illuminate (照亮) me and train me up for love. It is for these people that I reserve the glowing hours, too good not to share.

When I was in the eighth grade, I had a friend. We were shy and ―too serious‖ about our studies when it was becoming fashionable with our classmates to learn acceptable social behaviors. We said little at school, but she would come to my house and we would sit down with pencils and paper, and one of us would say: ―Let‘s start with a train whistle today.‖ We would sit quietly together and write separate poems or stories that grew out of a train whistle. Then we would read them aloud. At the end of that school year, we, too, were changed into social creatures and the stories and poems stopped.

When I lived for a time in London, I had a friend. He was in despair(失望) and I was in despair. But our friendship was based on the idea in each of us that we would be sorry later if we did not explore this great city because we had felt bad at the time. We met every Sunday for five weeks and found many excellent things. We walked until our despairs disappeared and then we parted. We gave London to each other.

For almost four years I have had a remarkable friend whose imagination illuminates mine. We write long letters in which we often discover our strangest selves. Each of us appears, sometimes in a funny way, in the other‘s drea ms. She and I agree that, at certain times, we seem to be parts of the mind. In my most interesting moments, I often think: ―Yes, I must tell…‖ We have never met.

It is such comforting companions I wish to keep. One bright hour with their kind is worth more to me than the lifetime services of a psychologist(心理学家),who will only fill up the healing (愈合的) silence necessary to those darkest moments in which I would rather be my own best friend.

One evening after dinner, Mr. and Mrs. William called a family meeting. ―We‘ve had to make a difficult decision.‖ Mr. William announced. ―You see, your mother has been offered a post as co-director of a television in Chicago. Unluckily, the station is not here. After thinking long and hard about it, we‘ve concluded that the right decision is to move to Chicago.‖Peter looked shocked, while his sister Amy breathlessly started asking when they‘d be moving: ―It‘s surprising, but exciting!‖ she said. Peter simply said, ―We can‘t go —I can‘t leave all my friends. I‘d rather stay here and live with Tommy!‖

Mr. and Mrs. William hoped that by the time they moved in August, Peter would grow more accustomed(习惯)to the idea of leaving. However, he showed no signs of accepting the news, refusing to pack his belongings.

Football is, I believe, the most popular game in England: one has only to go to one of the important matches to see this. Rich and poor, young and old, one can see them all there, shouting for their teams. One of the most surprising things about football in England is the great knowledge of the game which even the smallest boy seems to have. He can tell you the names of the players in most of the important teams. He has pictures of them and knows the results of large numbers of matches. He will tell you who he thinks will win such a match, and his opinion is usually as good as that of men three or four times of his age.

Most schools in England take football seriously —much more seriously than nearly all European schools, where lessons are all that are important and games are left for the children themselves. In England it is believed that education is not only a matter of filling a boy‘s mind with facts in the classroom; education also means the training of character by means of games, especially team games, where the boy or girl has to learn to work with others for his or her team instead of working for himself or herself alone. Therefore the school plans games and matches for its students. Football is a good team game. It is good both for the body and the mind. That is why it is every school‘s game in England.

1.In England, a boy‘s opinion of a match is often __________.

A.three or four times better than that of a man

B.worse than that of a man

C.as good as that of a man

D.worth thinking three or four times

2.In England, education means __________.

A.filling a boy‘s mind with stories

B.more than the teaching of knowledge

C.the teaching of knowledge only

D.training character by means of football games

3.Football games are very popular in England among __________.

A.all people

B.grown–ups

C.boys only

D.boys and girls

4.From the passage, we learn that __________.

A.schools in England make use of football games for the training of character

B.England is better than all the European countries

C.football is more important than lessons

D.only some schools in England have football games

(答案:BCBA)

During recent years, floods and flash floods have caused billions of dollars in damage. They are among the most common and widespread of all natural disasters. Even more importantly, they‘re the No.1 weather–related killers. A flood can happen anywhere along the Mississippi, in New England, even in the desert.

The following are some fascinating facts about floods and flash floods.

A flood (commonly called a river flood) is the high flow of water from a river of similar body of water, happening over a period of time too long to be considered a flash flood. Flooding is caused in many ways. Winter or spring rains, together with melting snows, can fill rivers too quickly. Heavy rains from hurricanes or other tropical(热带的)systems can also produce river flooding. The Mississippi River Flood of 1993 was caused by repeated heavy rain from thunderstorms over a period of weeks.

Flash floods are quickly–rising floods which are usually the result of heavy rains over a short period of time, often only several hours or even less. They can also be caused by ice jams (冰塞)on rivers related to a winter or spring melting, or occasionally even a dam break. The constant influx(汇集)of water finally causes a great overflow to begin, powerful enough to sweep vehicles away, roll big stones into roadways, uproot trees, level buildings, and knock bridge down. The speed of the rising of water is the most frightening thing.

Remember: Move to higher ground and stay away from low areas during heavy rain. Stay out of flooded areas. Never allow children to play or walk in flowing water. Never drive your car into water of unknown depths.

1.What is the best title for the passage?

A. Power of Floods

B. Damage of Floods

C. When Floods Happen

D. Facts About Floods

2.The last paragraph is mainly about _________.

A. flood safety tips

B. warnings for floods

C. waste water system

D. flood prevention

3.Which of the following statements is NOT the reason for the occurrence of flash

floods?

D. Ground water rising.

4.According to the passage, people are most afraid of __________ during flash floods.

My ideal(理想的) friend is of course a good friend whose goodness is shown below-he has no bad likings, such as smoking and drinking. He lives in frugality(节俭). He studies hard so as not to waste his golden time. At home he honors his parents and loves his brothers; at school he respects his teachers and shares feelings of his classmates. He treats those truly who are true to him. In a word, he has all the good characters better than mine. I can follow him as a model. However, some people enjoy listening to pop music which is very loud, and this can do harm to their eardrums(耳鼓). The noise level in some discos is far above the usual safety level for heavy industrial areas. One recent report about noise and concentration(专心) suggested that although a lot of people say that any noise disturbs their concentration, what really influences their ability to concentrate is a change in the level of noise.

CAL-FENGHAI-(2020YEAR-YICAI)_JINGBIAN

(What is the idea?What are facts?)

Children are always boasting. They say things like“My Dad's car is bigger than your Dad's,”“My Mom is smarter than yours.”and“My family has more money than yours.” The word“boasting” means __B___ A.骄傲 B.吹牛 C.顽皮 D.幼稚 Many plants and animals are going extinct.Mammoths, which are related(有关联的) with Asia elephants, are now extinct. There are no mammoths in the world today. 1.A mammoth is a kind of _C___.

From the passage,we learn that___.答案为B: The rainforest people have done some- thing to protect their home. An illness had kept the boy home和下文写给Rick的信中可以猜测出意为“去世”。
