Questions 31 to35 are based on the following passage:

Taiwanese singer Stefanie Sun(孙燕姿) looks just like any other young girl. She has short hair, a clear face and a sweet smile. However, there is something about her that makes her very special: her voice. No one else can sing like she can. Now, Sun is a bright star. She has released many albums.

Sun was born in Singapore. When she was a child, her father told her: “A person should always be good at something in life, so they have something to do for a hobby.”Sun chose to learn to play the piano when she was only five. Then, she took up kick-boxing because she felt she was thin and wanted to make herself stronger.

She often sings about the pain and happiness of growing up. The simple but true feelings in her music are loved by teens. “Sun may be a star, but she seems like a normal girl. She is close to us,”said Zhu Liying, 15, a Beijing student. “Her songs give me courage.”

Eventually, the star was tired because she had worked so hard. She stopped singing for a while and had a one-year holiday to travel. “I won’t give up singing. I just want a rest and to try something new. I hope to make better music when I come back,” Sun said then.

Passage Two

Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage:

Until very recently, the songs of colonial America were known only in srnall, isolated areas of the United States. They were handed down within a family circle, and there was no way for them to become known over the whole country or to be a real part of the nation's culture. Since each generation tended to remember its own songs and to forget the older songs it once knew, much of the nation's song heritage may have disappeared.

The first step toward preserving America's song heritage was taken by scholars, collectors and researchers who gathered and studied songs; next, singers became interested, and soon folk songs could be heard nationally on radio. Finally, America's rediscovered musical heritage spread to the schools, becoming part of every child's experience.

Many colonial songs were rediscovered in the southern Appalachians Mountains. Universities, the Library of Congress, and many individual collectors added to the treasury of song. In some parts of the nation old Scottish, Irish, Welsh, or English songs had not been pushed out of existence by newer music. These collectors found ten, twenty, even thirty versions of the same ballad sometimes with a different tune or story, but always recognizable and always originating in the same old song. In a few isolated places, the ballads still existed in what was probably the form sung in colonial days; but since the songs were transmitted orally, individual variations have probably crept in.

36. Until recently, colonial songs were preserved by______

A. popular radio broadcasts

B. recordings in the Library of Congress

C. classes in schools

D. families who passed them down

37. Many colonial songs may have disappeared because______.

A. people remembered older songs better

B. families kept their .songs a secret

C. each generation remembered its own music best

D. later generations wrote better music

38. Many additional songs were found by______.

A. university researchers

B. Library of Congress collectors

C. individual collectors

D. all of the above

39. It was unusual to find songs that______.

A. had more than one tune

B. originated in one old song

C. were still in their original form

D. came from Scottish and English ballads

40. We cannot tell whether any songs are exactly as they were in colonial days

because______.

A. there are many versions of every song

B. individual singers probably varied the songs

C. we have only the modern versions

D. the songs were written down in very rough fashion

Passage Three

Questions 41 to 45 are based on the following passage:

Science fiction (1) is a popular kind of writing and many people think of Jules Verne as the father of science fiction. He was born in France in 1828. His father wanted him to become a lawyer, but from his early twenties, Verne decided to become a writer. At first he wrote plays for the theater. Then, in 1863, he wrote a story called Five Weeks in a Ballon. The success of this book encouraged him to write more stories such as A Journey to the Center of the Earth ( 1864 ) and From the Earth to the Moon (1865 ) .

In the 19th century, many people were interested in science and inventions. Jules Verne wrote about scientific subjects in his stories and as a result, they were very popular. Verne's writing included many predictions for the 20th century and many of them came true. He described space flight, movies, and air conditioning, a long time before they appeared. These books were very successful and they made Verne rich.

Jules Verne's books have been the subjects for many movies. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was a successful movie for Walt Disney. It was the first Disney movie to use real actors instead of cartoon drawings. Around the World in Eighty Days is another famous movie based on one of Vene's books. The main character is an Englishman called Phileas Fogg. For him, the most important thing is to be always on time!

There he is trained by the lord of the castle to become a knight. He is a page. A page helps his lord dress and put on armor. He plays many training games that include wrestling,piggy-back wrestling, sword practice with blunt wooden swords and tiny round shields called bucklers, and lance practice on a rolling log pulled by two other pages toward a quintain (A quintain is a target on one end of a swinging board. On the other end is a bag full of sand. When the lance hits the target the rider has to duck or the bag of sand will strike him on the back or the head.). A page rarely ever learned how to read or write because it wasn’t thought to be very knightly. The ladies of the castle taught him table manners. The page waited on his lord and lady. It was his duty and privilege to accompany his lord and lady at all times. Whe n his lord’s armor was rusty, the page rolled the armor in a barrel of sand so that the rust was gone. He was taught to be quick, graceful, and flexible. He received religious training from the chaplain (牧师)? He sometimes received training-in-arms from the squires. Squires If the page showed promise, then at the age of fourteen,he became a squire. A squire is a Knight’s personal servant. In battle,a squire would bring his knight replacements of lances, swords, horses,or any item lost or damaged in battle. The squire had to become accustomed to heavy armor. A squire played games with real weapons against real knights! The squire learned to ride his war horse while keeping his weapon arm free. While he was a squire,he was allowed to carry a sword and a shield, which showed what rank he had achieved. The squire was taught not to kill many knights. Most knights held other knights for ransom. If he got through all of that,he was knighted or “dubbed”. Before a squire was dubbed,he did lots of things in preparation. First, he prayed all night. He prayed without sleeping or eating. When morning came,he would take a nice, warm bath. Then he put on a special padded vest and hood so that his armor did not hurt him. Then he would have a page help him put on chain mail armor or plate armor. Then the almost knighted squire would put on a white tunic. The tunic was white because white is the color of peace. He knelt before his lord. Then his lord would slap him with his hand or the flat of the sword. As his lord was doing that, his lord would say,“I dub thee Sir Knight.” Then the new knight would
