Guinness World Records, known until 2000 as The Guinness Book of Records (and in previous U.S. editions as The Guinness Book of World Records),is a reference book published annually, and contains an internationally recognized collection of world records—both human achievements and the extremes of the natural world. The book itself holds a world record, as the best-selling copyrighted series of all the time.

However, several world records that were once included in the book have been removed for ethical(伦理的)reasons.By publishing world records in categories, the book encourages people to try to beat that record, and pay no attention to health and safety. For example, following publication of a “heaviest cat”record, many cat owners fed their pets beyond the bounds(范围)of what was healthy;this is an example of one of the items that has been removed. In 1991,the book also dropped records within the “eating and drinking records”category of its Human Achievements section, concerning that potential competitors could harm themselves. These changes included the removal of all liquor, wine and beer-drinking records, along with records for eating such unlikely things as bicycles and trees.Other records, such as sword swallowing and rally driving(公路赛车) ,were closed to further items because the current record holders had performed beyond what were considered acceptable levels of human tolerance.

There have been examples of closed records being reopened, however. For example.the sword-swallowing record was listed as closed in the 1990 Guinness Book of World Records, but the Guinness world Records Primetime TV show, which started in 1998,accepted three sword swallowing challenges(as did the 2007 edition of the Guinness World Records).

Chain letters are also forbidden.According to the book’s publisher,“Guinness World Records does not accept any records related to chain letters, sent by post or e-mail. If you receive a letter or an e-mail,which may promise to publish the names of all those who send it,please destroy or delete it;it is a trick.”

1.This passage is mainly about________.

A.how many kinds of records Guinness World Records has

B.ethical issues and safety concerns related to Guinness World Records

C.the history of Guinness World Records

D.Guinness World Records in overview

2.what is the main purpose of the first paragraph?

A.To put forward the main idea of the passage.

B.To tell readers that the name of the book has been changed.

C.To indicate that Guinness World Records is a famous book.

D.To encourage people to read Guinness World Records.

3.Guinness World Records decided to remove some records because of the following reasons EXCEPT________.

A.the records are too difficult to break

B.the records were considered to involve immoral actions

C.some aspects of trying to break them were dangerous

D.some items were considered beyond acceptable levels of human tolerance.

答案:A

4.From what the publisher said we know________.

A.chain letters may convey incorrect information

B.emails of readers are ofen rejected by him

C.chain letters are sent by competitors

D.reading Guiness World Records is helpful to you

答案:A

5.From this passage we can learn that________.

A.sword swallowing will forever be closed to further competition items

B.the item about the fattest dog can be found in the present book

C.the editors of Guinness World Records don’t want readers to write to them

D.the record related to rally driving can still be found in the book

A项与第二段中such as sword swallowing...were closed to... For example,following publishing...has been removed.

【例1】(2009·广东卷B篇)We studied the board critically. Some of us looked with one eye and held up certain colors against the blackboard, rocking the sheets to the right or left while we conjured_up our designs. Others twisted their hair around their fingers or chewed their erasers while deep in thought. We had plans for that ten dollar grand prize, each and every one of us. I’m going to spend mine on candies, one hopeful would announce, while another practiced looking serious, wise and rich.

(A)The underlined phrase in Paragraph 3 most probably means ________.

A.formed an idea for B.made an outline for

C.made some space for D.chose some colors for

句子,while we conjured up our designs 的对应部分是while deep in thought,可见conjured up的意思是“思考,想象”,所以A项正确。

【例2】(2009·全国Ⅱ卷A篇)I know what you’re thinking: pizza(比萨饼)? For breakfast? But the truth is that you can have last night’s leftovers in the a.m. if you want to.

(A)The word “leftovers” in Paragraph 1 probably means ________

A.food remaining after a meal B.things left undone

C.meals made of vegetables D.pizza topped with fruit

【例3】(2008·陕西卷A篇)There was no shade and our legs were aching. We decided to go back, with the girl on my back and the boys far behind. By the time we finally got back, our_legs_were_like_jelly.

(A)The underlined expression “Our legs were like jelly” probably means ________.

A.we were weak B.we were unhappy

C.we were dissatisfied D.we were disappointed

There was no shade and our legs were aching可知“我们很累很虚弱”,故A项正确。

【例4】(2008·重庆卷A篇)I arrived at my mother’s home for our Monday family dinner. The smells of food flew over from the kitchen. Mother was pulling out quilt(被子) after quilt from the boxes, proudly showing me their beauties. She was perparing for a quilt show at the Elmhurst Church. When we began to fold and put them back into the boxes, I noticed something at the bottom of on box.. I pulled it out. “What is this?” I asked.

“Oh?”Mom said, “That’s Mama’s quilt.”

I spread the quilt. It looked at if a group of school children had pieced it together: irrugular designs, childish pictures, a crooked line on the right.

(C)1.Why did the author go to mother’s home?

A.To see her mother’s quilts

B.To help prepare for a show

C.To get together for the family dinner

D.To discuss her grandmother’s life

(C)2.The underlined word “crooked” in the passage most probably means ________.

A.unfinished B.broken C.bent D.unusual

【例5】(2008·安徽卷C篇)How do people climb the wall? To climb, you need special shoes and harness (保护带) around your chest to hold you. There are ropes tied to your harness. The ropes hold you in place so that you don’t fall. A beginner’s wall is usually about 15 feet high, and you climb straight up. There are small pieces of metal that stick out for you to stand on and hold on to. Sometimes it’s easy to see the new piece of metal. Sometimes, it’s not. The most difficult is to control your fear. It’s normal for humans to be afraid of falling, so it’s difficult not to feel fear. But when you move away from the wall, the harness and the ropes hold you, and you begin to feel safe. You move slowly until you reach the top.

Climbing attracts people because it’s good exercise for almost everyone. You use your whole body, especially your arms and legs. This sport gives your body a complete workout. When you climb, both your mind and your body can become stronger.

(B)1.The most difficult thing to do in wall climbing is ________.

A.to tie ropes to your

B.to control your fear

C.to move away from the wall

D.to climb straight up

(B)2.The word “workout” underlined in the last paragraph most probably means ________.

A.settlement B.exercise C.excitement D.tiredness

根据it’s difficult not to feel fear可知,人们在攀墙时很难控制自己的恐惧,故B项正确。

1)According to the passage, probably means ________

2)The author uses the word to mean ________

3)What does the underlined word refer to?

4)The word (phrase, clause,...)... refers to (most probable means)...________

5)What does the word...in Para...stand for?

6)What does the writer mean when he says,“...”?

7)Which of the following best explains the meaning of the word...as it is used in the text?

8)Which of the following is the closest in meaning to the word...?

Annealing is a way of making metal softer by heating it and then letting it cool very slowly.

It will be very hard but also very brittle—that is, it will break easily.

The herdsman, who looks after sheep, earns about 650 yuan a year.

They traveled a long way, at last got to a castle, a large building in old times.

同位语部分a large building in old times给出了castle的确切词义,即“城堡”。

We are on the night shift—from midnight to 8 a.m.—this week.

She is usually prompt for all her class, but today she arrived in the middle of her first class.

Perhaps, we can, see some possibilities for next fifty years. But the next hundred?

The lack of movement caused the muscles to weaken. Sometimes the weakness was permanent. So the player could never play the sport again.

①In the passage, which of the following is mentioned/not mentioned?

②It is commonly accepted that...

③All the statements are true EXCEPT ________.

④Choose the right order of the events given in the passage.

⑤The reason for..., is that...

⑥How would you describe the end of...?

⑦Choose the right order of the events given in the following.

⑧Which of the following maps shows the right position of...?

⑨Which statement is true?

⑩What does the writer pay least attention to?

③略读材料,大概了解文章,注意作者表例证的词或短语,如for example, for instance, that is to say, in fact, etc.

⑤把主要精力放在寻找你所需要的细节,找到后,放慢速度、细读要查找的内容,特别注意表因果或转折的词或短语,如because, for, since, as, therefore, and, as a result; but, however, while, though, yet, on the other hand, etc.

But he became inspired when he tho ught about helping ordinary people exposed to cholera. This was the deadly dise ase of its day. Neither its cause nor its cure was understood. So many thousand s of terrified people died every time there was an outbreak. John Snow wanted t o face the challenge and solve this problem. He knew that cholera would never b e controlled until its cause was found. He became interested in two theories that possibly explained how cholera ki lled people. The first suggested that cholera multiplied in the air. A cloud of dangerous gas floated around until it found its victims. The second suggested that people absorbed this disease into their bodies with their meals. From the stomach the disease quickly attacked the body and soon the affected person die d. John Snow suspected that the second theory was correct but he needed eviden ce. So when another outbreak hit London in 1854, he was ready to begin his enqu iry. As the disease spread quickly through poor neighbourhoods, he began to gat her information. In two particular streets, the cholera outbreak was so severe that more than 500 people died in ten days. He was determined to find out why. First he marked on a map the exact places where all the dead people had liv ed. This gave him a valuable clue about the cause of the disease. Many of the d eaths were near the water pump in Broad Street (especially numbers 16, 37, 38 a nd 40). He also noticed that some houses (such as 20 and 21 Broad Street and 8 and 9 Cambridge Street) had had no deaths. He had not foreseen this, so he made further investigations. He discovered that these people worked in the pub at 7 Cambridge Street. They had been given free beer and so had not drunk the water from the pump. It seemed that the water was to blame. Next, John Snow looked into the source of the water for these two streets. He found that it came from the river polluted by the dirty water from London. H e immediately told the astonished people in Broad Street to remove the handle f rom the pump so that it could not be used. Soon afterwards the disease slowed d own. He had shown that cholera was spread by germs and not in a cloud of gas. In another part of London, he found supporting evidence from two other deat hs that were linked to the Broad Street outbreak. A woman, who had moved away f rom Broad Street, liked the water from the pump so much that she had it deliver ed to her house every day. Both she and her daughter died of cholera after drin king the water. With this extra evidence John Snow was able to announce with ce rtainty that polluted water carried the virus.

5 Unit 2 The United Kingdom Reading PUZZLES IN GEOGRAPHY People may wonder why different words are used to describe these four countries: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. You can clarify this question if you study British history. First there was England. Wales was linked to it in the thirteenth century. Now when people refer to England you find Wales included as well. Next England and Wales were joined to Scotland in the seventeenth century and the name was changed to "Great Britain". Happily this was accomplished without conflict when King James of Scotland became King of England and Wales as well. Finally the English government tried in the early twentieth century to form the United Kingdom by getting Ireland connected in the same peaceful way. However, the southern part of Ireland was unwilling and broke away to form its own government. So only Northern Ireland joined with England, Wales and Scotland to become the United Kingdom and this was shown to the world in a new flag called the Union Jack. To their credit the four countries do work together in some areas (eg, the currency and international relations), but they still have very different institutions. For example, Northern Ireland, England and Scotland have different educational and legal systems as well as different football teams for competitions like the World Cup! England is the largest of the four countries, and for convenience it is divided roughly into three zones. The zone nearest France is called the South of England, the middle zone is called the Midlands and the one nearest to Scotland is known as the North. You find most of the population settled in the south, but most of the industrial cities in the Midlands and the North of England. Although, nationwide, these cities are not as large as those in China, they have world-famous football teams and some of them even have two! It is a pity that the industrial cities built in the nineteenth century do not attract visitors. For historical architecture you have to go to older but smaller towns built by the Romans. There you will find out more about British history and culture. The greatest historical treasure of all is London with its museums, art collections, theatres, parks and buildings.

But he became inspired when he tho ught about helping ordinary people exposed to cholera. This was the deadly diseas e of its day. Neither its cause nor its cure was understood. So many thousands of terrified people died every time there was an outbreak. John Snow wanted to face the challenge and solve this problem. He knew that cholera would never be contr olled until its cause was found. He became interested in two theories that possibly explained how cholera kille d people. The first suggested that cholera multiplied in the air. A cloud of dangero us gas floated around until it found its victims. The second suggested that people absorbed this disease into their bodies with their meals. From the stomach the dis ease quickly attacked the body and soon the affected person died. John Snow suspected that the second theory was correct but he needed evide nce. So when another outbreak hit London in 1854, he was ready to begin his en quiry. Many of the de aths were near the water pump in Broad Street (especially numbers 16, 37, 38 an d 40). He also noticed that some houses (such as 20 and 21 Broad Street and 8 and 9 Cambridge Street) had had no deaths. He had not foreseen this, so he mad e further investigations. He discovered that these people worked in the pub at 7 C ambridge Street. They had been given free beer and so had not drunk the water f rom the pump. It seemed that the water was to blame. Next, John Snow looked into the source of the water for these two streets. He found that it came from the river polluted by the dirty water from London. He imm ediately told the astonished people in Broad Street to remove the handle from the pump so that it could not be used. Soon afterwards the disease slowed down. He had shown that cholera was spread by germs and not in a cloud of gas. In another part of London, he found supporting evidence from two other deaths that were linked to the Broad Street outbreak. A woman, who had moved away fr om Broad Street, liked the water from the pump so much that she had it delivered to her house every day. Both she and her daughter died of cholera after drinking the water. With this extra evidence John Snow was able to announce with certaint y that polluted water carried the virus. To prevent this from happening again, John Snow suggested that the source o f all the water supplies be examined. The water companies were instructed not to expose people to polluted water any more. Finally "King Cholera" was defeated. COPERNICUS’ REVOLUTIONRRY THEORY
