12.(7.5分)Eighteen people in central Kenya are taking the country's secondary education test, called the KCSE.Even under normal conditions, this examination can make a student nervous. But these 18 students may feel especially fearful. They are serving sentences in a top ﹣security prison. And if they do well in the test, they might get to leave the prison.During the test the inmates(囚犯)sit at school desks at Naivasha Prison. The classroom looks like any other except that the students are wearing prison uniforms.David Noah Okwemba has just finished the examination for history and biology. He says he wants people to know that the prisoners are no longer criminals.Instead,he says they are students.Prisoners who perform well can have their sentences changed. They may be released early to go to university or find employment.Patrick Mwenda is head officer at Naivasha prison. He says Naivasha works with the high courts to consider the cases of prisoners who get high marks and nine.prisoners have been released since 2008 as a result of.their schooling and tests. So far,the releases have gone only to prisoners sentenced to short terms.Only one other possibility for freedom exists for those facing life in prison and those who have used up all their legal appeals.Kenya's Power of Mercy committee advises about pardons for prisoners.Mr.Mwenda admits the difficulties of getting a pardon. But he says the prison urges students with longer sentences to build skills, which would help them have a good record to show the committee.

Inmate Prince Winsor Mosii does not approve of the whole system."The Power of Mercy is not actually helpful. It is there, but it is not helping in setting us at liberty, even if you have

performed." Serving a life, sentence for his involvement in an armed robbery,Prince Winsor Mosii took his KCSE exam last year. But he says he does not see much reason to get an education if he is to remain in prison."It is of no good to get or to acquire something of great value, skills, and not put it into action."

13.(10分)As a dropout myself,I often feel it is my duty to defend my fellow non﹣scholars.Common wisdom would have you believe we are the "bad kids",the future criminals, the worst sort of people. But not all dropouts are likely to deal drugs, steal goods from a shop,or shoot pool all day.

My own favorite place to go when skipping school was always the public library. My early retirement meant that at last I had the time to read everything I wanted to.I found reading Thomas Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow a lot more interesting than reading about Sir Isaac

Newton and the falling apple.

Best of all was the time I finally had to myself.I felt liberated.I had been in school nearly my whole life.I wanted to find out for myself who I was,and until I did, everything else felt like a waste of time.

However, after nearly three years,a series of strange thoughts began to make me anxious and unsure.Images of myself at the age of 35 began to haunt(缠扰)me in my sleep. And a voice in my head began asking over and over,"Who is paying the hot water bills?Who buys the microwave pizza?"The answer,of course, was my poor old parents.Sure,I was having an enjoyable time doing plenty of nothing, discovering myself and all,but that's unfair to them. What parents long to see their child drop out of school, with no plans for the future?Could they be expected to support me forever?Certainly not.I immediately moved out of the house and out of town,in search of a future for myself.

And it is here,in my new home of San Francisco, that I have decided to do what was once unthinkable:go back to school.I plan to take adult education classes and then apply for City College. On the one hand,I can hardly believe I'm doing it:a return to desks, chalkboards, and clocks that tell you when to stop thinking about one thing and start thinking about another. But at City College,I'll be able to take film production, semiotics, and sociology ﹣just because I want to know about them.

So next time you see a dropout,be sympathetic. And please don't push him to do something he doesn't want to do.It never works. He'll come around when he's ready.

第二节概要写作(满分25分)

18.(25分)阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要.

Architects have long had the feeling that the places we live in can affect our thoughts, feelings and behaviors. But now scientists are giving this feeling an empirical(实证的)basis. They are discovering how to design spaces that promote creativity, keep people focused and lead to relaxation.

Researches show that aspects of the physical environment can influence creativity. In 2007,Joan Meyers﹣Levy at the University of Minnesota, reported that the height of a room's ceiling affects how people think. Her research indicates that higher ceilings encourage people

to think more freely, which may lead them to make more abstract connections.Low ceilings,on the other hand, may inspire a more detailed outlook.

In addition to ceiling height, the view afforded by a building may influence a person's ability to concentrate.Nancy Wells and her colleagues at Cornell University found in their study that kids who experienced the greatest increase in greenness as a result of a family move made the most gains on a standard test of attention.According to another study at the University of Georgia, using nature to improve focus of attention seems to pay off academically. It found that students in classrooms with unblocked views of at least 50 feet outside the window had higher scores on tests of vocabulary, language arts and maths than did students whose classrooms primarily overlooked roads and parking lots.

Recent study on room lighting design suggests that dim(暗淡的)light helps people to loosen up.If that is true generally, keeping the light low during dinner or at parties could increase relaxation.Researchers of Harvard Medical School also discovered that furniture with rounded edges could help visitors relax.

So far scientists have focused mainly on public buildings."We have a very limited.number of studies,so we're almost looking at the problem through a straw," architect David Allison says."How do you take answers to very specific questions and make broad, generalized use of them? That's what we're all struggling with."

A In 1812, the year Charles Dickens was born, there were 66 novels published in Britain. People had been writing novels for a century—most experts date the first novel to Robinson Crusoe in 1719— but nobody wanted to do it professionally. The steam-powered printing press was still in its early stages; the literacy (识字)rate in England was under 50%. Many works of fiction appeared without the names of the authors, often with something like “By a lady.”Novels, for the most part, were looked upon as silly, immoral, or just plain bad. In 1870, when Dickens died, the world mourned him as its first professional writer and publisher, famous and beloved, who had led an explosion in both the publication of novels and their readership and whose characters —from Oliver Twist to Tiny Tim—were held up as moral touchstones. Today Dickens’ greatness is unchallenged. Removing him from the pantheon(名人堂)of English literature would make about as much sense as the Louvre selling off the Mona Lisa. How did Dickens get to the top? For all the feelings readers attach to stories, literature is a numbers game, and the test of time is extremely difficult to pass. Some 60,000 novels were published during the Victorian age, from 1837 to1901; today a casual reader might be able to name a half-dozen of them. It’s partly true that Dickens’ style of writing attracted audiences from all walks of life. It’s par tly that his writings rode a wave of social, political and scientific progress. But it’s also that he rewrote the culture of literature and put himself at the center. No one will ever know what mix of talent, ambition, energy and luck made Dickens such a singular writer. But as the 200th anniversary of his birth approaches, it is possible — and important for our own culture—to understand how he made himself a lasting one. 21. Which of the following best describes British novels in the 18th century? A. They were difficult to understand. B. They were popular among the rich. C. They were seen as nearly worthless. D. An express train was due to go past about thirty minutes later. If it were not stopped, that long train, full of passengers, would fall into the stream. “Someone must go to the station and warn the station-master,” Kate thought. But who was to go? She would have to go herself. There was no one else. In wind and rain, she started on her difficult was. Soon she was at the bridge that crossed the Des Moines River, a bridge also built of wood, just like the bridge across Honey Creek. The storm had not washed this away, but there was no footpath across it. She would have to cross it by stepping from sleeper(枕木) to sleeper. With great care she began the dangerous crossing, sometimes on her hands and knees, hardly daring to look down between the sleepers into the wild flood waters below. If she should slip, she would fall between the sleepers, into the rapidly flowing stream. At last -she never knew how long it had taken her – she felt solid ground under her feet. But there was no time to rest. She still had to run more than half a mile and had only a few minutes left. Unless she reached the station before the express did, many, many lives would be lost. She did reach the station just as the train came into sight. Fortunately, the station-master was standing outside. “The bridge is down! Stop the train! Oh, please stop it!” Kate shouted breathlessly. The station-master went pale. He rushed into the station building and came back with a signal light. He waved the red light as the train came into the station. It was not a second too early. 21. What did Kate decide to do? A. Stop the express train. B. Check the signal light. C. Meet the passengers. D. Visit the station-master. 22. Which of the following words best describes Kate’s journey? A. Fruitless. B. Boring. C. Well-planned. D. Ricky. 23. Why did the station-master turn pale? A. He suddenly fell ill. B. He realized the danger. C. He discovered his mistake. D. He became over-excited. B The Crowne Plaza Hotel in Copenhagen is offering a free meal to man guest who is able to produce electricity for the hotel on an exercise bile linked to a generator(发电机). The idea is to get people fit and reduce their carbon footprint. Guest will have to produce at least 10 watt hours of electricity – roughly 15 minutes of cycling for someone of average fitness. Guests staying at Plaza Hotel will be given meal tickets worth $36 once they have produced 10 watt hours of electricity. The bicycles will have smart phones attached to the handlebars measuring how much power is being generated for the hotel. The plan, a world-first, will start on 19 April and run for a year. Only guest staying at the hotel will be able to take part. Frederikke Toemmergaard, hotel spokeswoman, said, “Many of our visitors are business people who enjoy going to the gym. There might be people who will cycle just to get a free meal, but gen erally I don’t think people will take advantage of our programme.” Copenhagen has a long-standing cycling tradition an 36% of locals cycle to work each day, one of the highest percentages in the world, according to the website visitcopenhagen.dk. US environmental website https://www.wendangku.net/doc/b116247386.html, recently voted Copenhagen the world’s best city for cyclists. “Because Copenhagen is strongly connected with cycling, we felt the bicycle would work well as symbol of the hotel’s green profile(形象).” If successful, the electric bicycle meal programme will be spread to all Crowne Plaza hotels in the UK, the hotel said in a statement. 24. What is the main purpose of the free meal programme? A. To promote the hotel’s green concept. B. To make the city known to the world. C. To attract people to the hotel restaurant. D. To get guests to stay longer at the hotel. 25. How can a participant get a free meal? A. By becoming a professional cyclist. B. By cycling to produce some electricity.
