I met Mrs. Neidl in the ninth grade on a stage-design team for a play and she was one of the directors. Almost instantly I loved her. She had an unpleasant voice and a direct way of speaking, yet she was encouraging and inspiring. For some reason, she was impressed with my work and me.

Introduction to Letters to Sam

Dear Reader,

Please allow me to tell you something before you read this book. When my 36 , Sam, was born, my heart was filled with joy. I had been sitting in a wheelchair for 20 years before then, and I have been 37 ill many times. So I wondered if I would have the time to tell Sam what I had 38 .

For years I have been hosting a program on the 39 and writing articles for a magazine. Being unable to move freely, I have learned to sit still and keep my heart 40 , exchanging thoughts with thousands of listeners and 41 . So when Sam was born, I 42 to tell him about school and

friendship, romance and work, love and ever ything else. That’s how I started to write these 43 . I hope that Sam would 44 them sooner or later.

However, that expectation 45 when Sam showed signs of autism (自闭症) at the age of two. He had actually stopped talking before the discovery of the signs. He 46 to communicate with others, even the family members. That was 47 for me but didn’t stop me writing on. I realized that I had even more now to tell him. I wanted him to 48 what it means to be ―different‖ from others, and learn how to fight against the misfortune he’ll face as I myself, his grandfather, did. I just 49 if I could write all that I wanted to say in the rest of my life.

Now, as the book has been published, I have been given the chance. Every chapter in the book is a letter to Sam:some about my life, and all about what it means to be a 50 .

I will never forget the year I was about twelve years old. My mother told us that we would not be 21 Christmas gifts because there was not enough money. I felt sad and thought, ―What would I say when the other kids asked what I’d 22 ?‖ Just when I started to accept that there would not be a Christmas that year, three women 23 at our house with gifts for all of us. For me they brought a doll. I felt such a sense of 24 that I would no longer have to be embarrassed when I returned to school. I wasn’t 25 . Somebody had thought 26 of me to bring me a gift.

Years later, when I stood in the kitchen of my new house, thinking how I wanted to make my 27 Christmas there special and memorable, I 28 reme mbered the women’s visit. I decided that I wanted to create that same feeling of 29 for as many children as I could possibly reach.

So I 30 a plan and gathered forty people from my company to help. We gathered about 125 orphans (孤儿) at the Christmas party. For every child, we wrapped colorful packages filled with toys, clothes, and school supplies, each with a child’s name. We wanted all of them to know they were 31 . Before I called out their names and handed them their gifts, I 32 them that they couldn’t open their presents until every child had come forward. Finally the 33 they had been waiting for came as I called out, ―One, two, three. Open your presents!‖ As the children opened their packages, their faces beamed and their bright smiles 34 up the room. The 35 in the room was obvious, and it wasn’t just about toys. It was a feeling –the feeling I knew from that Christmas so long ago when the women came to visit. I wasn’t forgotten. Anothe r person’s enthusiasm was what set me moving toward the success I have achieved. That person was my stepmother.

I was nine years old when she enterd our home in rural Virginia. My father 36 _ me to her with these words: ―I would like you to meet the fell ow who is 37 for being the worst boy in this county and will probably start throwing rocks at you no later than tomorrow morning.‖

My stepmother walked over to me, 38 my head slightly upward, and looked me right in the eye. Then she looked at my father and replied, ―You are 39 . This is not the worst boy at all, but the smartest one who hasn’t yet found an outlet(释放的途径)for his enthusiasm.‖

That statement began a(n) 40 between us. No one had ever called me smart, my family and neighbors had built me up in my mind as a bad boy. My stepmother changed all that.

She changed many things. She 41 my father to go to a dental school, from which he graduated with honors. She moved our family into the county seat, where my father’s career could be m ore 42 and my brother and I could be better 43 .

When I turned fourteen, she bought me a secondhand 44 and told me that she believed that I could become a writer. I knew her ernthusiasm, I appreciated it had alreadly improved our lives. I accepted her 45 and began to write for local newspapers. I was doing the same kind of 46 that great day I went to interview Andrew Carnegie and received the task which became my life’s work later. I wasn’t the only beneficiary (受益者). My father became the 47 man in town. My brother and stepbrothers became a physician, a dentist, a lawyer, and a college president.

What power __48 has! When that power is released to support the certainty of one’s purpose and is 49 strengthened by faith, it becomes an irresistible(不可抗拒的)force which poverty and temporary defeat can never 50 .

You can communicate that power to anyone who needs it. This is probably the greatest work you can do with your enthusiasm.

It was a cool October evening. Excitement and family members filled the hall. I was only a 7-year-old girl, but I was the center of 36 . Finally, after weeks of preparation, I would 37 all my hard work in a dance of performance. Everything would be 38 —so I thought. I waited baskstage all 39 in my black tights with a golden belt. In a loud and clear voice, the master of ceremonies announced that my class was next.

Most English people have three names: a first name, a middle name and the family name. Their family name comes 1 . For example, my 2 name is Jim Allan White. White is my 3 name. My 4 gave me both of my other names. People don't use their 5 names very often. So "John Henry Brown" is usually 6 "John Brown". People never use Mr, Mrs or Miss before their 7 names. So you can say John Brown, or Mr Brown, 8 you should never say Mr John. They use Mr、Mrs or Miss 9 the family name. This is 10 from Chinese names. The first name is the family name, and the last name is the given name.
