“The concept of fate” comes up a lot in conversation with Julia Roberts. 'I don't want to toy with the gods,' she'll say. This is understandable since by any accounting she has been phenomenally lucky: a career that has lasted more than 25 years and includes a best-actress Oscar and a marriage that has sailed past the decade mark. But these days, she's trying to live a life more ordinary, admittedly a difficult proposition for someone who found super-stardom at 22 with 1990's Pretty Woman and to date has brought in $2.6 billion in box office receipts.

She loves the family she created with cinematographer husband Danny Moder, whom she married in 2002. She seems content right where she is-dressed in a sweater and jeans, newly blond hair pulled back, her delicately lined face free of makeup, with her children -- 9-year-old twins Hazel and Finn and 6-year-old Henry, climbing into her lap to collect hugs. Almost all of her acting work is shot around their schedule, even her most recent: an adaptation of The Normal Heart, a play about the early fight against AIDS, airing on HBO this month.

“Her family is a major part of what she does,” adds Bradley Cooper, her co-star in 2010's Valentine's Day , during which, he recalls, a dressing room was turned into a playroom for the 1?-year-old twins. “Her children are always around.”

Recently sorrow caught up to Roberts when her half-sister Nancy Motes died at 37 from a possible drug overdose in early February. “You don't want anything bad to happen to anyone, but there are so many tragic, painful, inexplicable things in the world. But as with any situation of challenge and despair, we must find a way, as a family.”

21. What is probably the best title of the passage?

C. Julia Roberts’ Lovely Children.

D. Julia Roberts and Her Family Life.

23. According to the passage, The Normal Heart is originally a_____________.

24. In the last paragraph, t he author mentioned Roberts’ sister to

A. tell us that Roberts hates her sister.

B. stress that Roberts values her family.

C. encourage Roberts to hide her sorrow.

D. show that Roberts’ sister overdose drug.

While it's located at the so-called "center of the universe," the billboard-covered building is mostly empty. The New York Times constructed the building as its general office building in 1904, and staged a massive New Year's Eve firework display to celebrate.

But when the city outlawed the fireworks, The Times' chief electrician, Walter Palmer, came up with the idea to drop a lighted ball from the top of the tower instead.

The New York Times owned the building for less than 10 years, and it fell into disrepair as Midtown grew ragged. According to a 1961 "Talk of the Town" piece, "There was a time when alcohol-illegal-selling was going full popularity in one of the basements...when the F.B.I. – this was during the Second World War –was holding automatic gun practice in a basement and using a 7th floor office to trap German spies."

In 1995, Lehman Brothers bought the building, but instead of renting office space, it turned the 25-story tower into a billboard and made a 300 percent profit in two years.

Filings from 2012 show that the billboards covering the building generate over $23 million annually, which represents 85 percent of the building's total revenue. The building itself has an estimated value between $378 million and $495 million.

Walgreens rents the first three floors, with some storage space above that. The upper floors are used for New Year's Eve. But in between, there's not much else.

25. Why did the New York Times build the building?

A. To take it as its general office building

B. To present the New Year’s Eve fireplay.

C. To throw a lighted ball from above.

D. To make advertising by billboard.

26. For what was the building used during World War II?

A. For public use.

B. For secret use.

C. For agriculture use.

D. For business use.

27. What is the writer’s attitude to the Lehman Brothers?

A. They are greedy and selfish.

B. They have a brave heart.

C. They are self-disciplined.

D. They have a business brain.

28. Which of the following does the underlined phrase mean?

A. The building's whole costs.

B. The building's complete value.

C. The building's entire income.

D. All the building's expenses.

C

Today’s youngsters use smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices(设备) more than ever before. And the amount of time they spend on these devices is only likely to increase in the future. But are all these changes good?

We sometimes call children who grow up able to use mobile devices and technology easily digital natives. They can text, email, get Wi-Fi, and download. Some experts say that

long periods of time spent chatting to friends online, playing video games and listening to mp3s, for example, may possibly change how their brains work.

Then there is the question of privacy. All this online activity creates a digital footprint. Every time we share a photo or a post on social media, and every time we search for something on the Internet, information about our activity is stored somewhere.

Our inability to control what happens to our children's digital footprint - and their personal privacy - has big possibilities. It might become normal for companies to ask their employees for their social media qualifications. We are also becoming more aware that companies and governments may be able to 'listen in' on our communications. So it is important to make our children aware of the possible results of oversharing.

Another area where the digital world may have a big effect is in education. One worry is that kids who spend a lot of time online at home are sometimes unable to socialise properly with other children when they are at school. Other experts point out that, when it comes to children and technology, the children are the experts, not the teachers. They say that we should stop seeing online as 'bad' and offline as 'good' - and there is evidence of innovative (革新的)work in some schools.

So, do we really need to rescue our children from the dangers of the digital world?

29. According to the second paragraph, what is the possible effect of digital childhood?

A. Children can grow up quickly.

B. Children can read texts fluently.

C. Children’s way of thinking may be changed.

D. Children may become mentally disabled.

30. All the following may happen to our digital footprints EXCEPT________

A. When surfing the Internet, our digital footprints are saved.

B. Some business societies may take advantage of the information.

C. Government may look into our communication through the Internet.

D. Digital pictures may be printed by our computer automatically.

31. Why are many teachers doubtful about digital technology?

A. Because some students can not do well in studies.

B. Because some teachers haven’t changed for years.

C. Because some students addicted to digital technology can not socialize well.

D. Because some teachers addicted to tradition technology cannot teach well.

32. Which of the following can sumarize the main idea of the text?

A. Do we need to rescue our kids from the digital world?

B. Should children learn to use digital technology?

C. Are there changes in children’s school life?

D. Should teachers accept changes in our life?

D

The Effects of Bullying (恃强凌弱)on Health

A popular expression goes, "What does not kill us makes us stronger." 36

Increasing evidence suggests that the effects of being bullied do not end with childhood.

37 The report is based on research that began in 1993. The Great Smoky Mountains study observed 1,420 children from western North Carolina for years. The scientists followed the people as they went through childhood to teen years and into young adulthood.

The research showed that those who were bullied can develop long-term mental health problems as young adults. It also showed that adults who were bullied as children have higher levels of C-reactive protein, or CRP. CRP is a sign of nervous tension on the body. Higher levels of CRP usually mean health problems later in life.

The Great Smoky Mountains study also found something completely new about bullying. It seems that the bullies were healthier than the bullied. 38 The study found that those subjects who had never been bullied, but had bullied others, had the lowest levels of CRP.

39 Catherine Bradshaw is deputy director of the Johns Hopkins Center for the Prevention of Youth Violence in Baltimore, Maryland. She warns that lower CRP levels might just represent a difference in the bullies' basic biology. Ms. Bradshaw says that a health gain should not be understood as permission to bully.

Mr. Copeland says bullying is a serious childhood experience that is no longer found only at schools and on playgrounds. 40 Some children who are bullied have killed themselves. Sometimes bullies even kill their victims.

A. This fact made many people interested.

B. But when it comes to being bullied, that may not be the case.

C. At least it is true when talking about CRP levels.

D. Many adults suffer psychological and physical damage a lot.

E. Experts on bullying worry about that message.

F. Online or cyber bullying can make even a child's home feel unsafe.

G. A recent Duke University report shows that bullying can have permanent effects.

Welcome to our school! High school students are faced a choice between arts and science. It was not the easy choice for me to make it. After careful consideration, though, I decide on science as my main subject of study. The reasons are as following.

First, science graduates are in great demand than arts one in China. Second, the science major can help me achieve my childhood dream of becoming a scientist. Third, my parents wish me to study science at college so they believe I will have a brighter future as a science student. It was about these reasons that I finally made my choice.

Thanks!

参考范文:

Dear Mike,

I’m glad to receive your letter asking about the students’ community service and voluntary work of our school.

These activities are organized by the Students’ Union and they are intended for students from Grade One and Grade Two, who organize activities on weekends and during holidays.

The community service and voluntary work, aiming to offer students more opportunities to contribute to society, benefit us a lot. Taking part in these activities can help us develop self-confidence, make new friends and broaden our horizons. At the same time, these activities can help us develop interpersonal skills, enabling us to communicate with each other more easily. Besides, we have developed more interests, which enrich our lives.

I acquire a lot in an amazing way. Meanwhile, I bring myself closer to society, which prepares me better for my future career.

Yours,

Li Hua

(Text 4)

W: Oh, Michael, how did it go?

M:Well, it’s a bit of disappointment. I really trained for a long time for that race. It was goi ng really really well, and just about half way through I tripped over something, and fell and hurt my knees. I really couldn’t even finish. I was really really upset about that.

(Text 7)

W: Tell me what happened that morning.

W: Oh, I started taking ballet lessons when I was seven years old.

M: Was that in New York City?

W: No, but I came to New York after I finished high school. And I studied at the International School of Dance for three years.

M: So what did you do after graduating?

W: Well, I went to Europe for a while. And I got a job in Amsterdam. You s ee, it’s very difficult for a dancer to get a job here in the beginning, so I went to Holland. They’ve got an excellent ballet company, the Royal Dutch Ballet. And that’s where I got my first professional experience.

(Text 9)

W: Hello, Dave. I haven’t seen you for some time. Have you been away?

M: Yes, I’ve just returned from a holiday in France and Spain.

W: Sounds good. Did you travel around much?

M: Quite a lot. I had a month’s holiday so there was plenty of time.

W: How did you get around?

M: Oh, all sorts of ways---bus, boat, train, car and plane. I caught the train from London to Donver and then got the boat across the Channel to Calais. I met a friend on the boat who was going to Paris too, so I had company on the train journey from Calais. In fact she had friends in Paris so I stayed with them for a few days instead of in a hotel. It saved me a lot of money. W: That was lucky! What did you do there?

M: Oh, the normal thing---went to the Louvre and Notre Dame and Eiffel Tower and so on. It was my first visi to Paris and it was so interesting to see them.

(Text 10)

M: In this lesson we’ll talk about the pioneer of chocolate cookies in America “Amos cookies”. Amos was a talent agent at the William Morrris Agency who used home-baked chocolate chip

cookies as a calling card. After a while, some of his famous business partners encouraged him to sell the cookies. They even invested in the Famous Amos Cookie Company, which he started in 1975, making him one of the pioneers in his industry. Sales at Famous Amos hit $12 million by 1982. His cookies were a success, but he was no manager, and his company started losing money. Amos had to bring in new money; from 1985 to 1988, he went through four different co-owners. Each time a change was made, Amos gave up more of his share of the pie. By the tiem Shanby Group bought it in 1988, Amos had nothing left; he even signed away his trademark rights. In 1992, when he started a new company called “Wally Amos Presents: Chip and Cookie”, the famous Amos Corp. took him to court. In the end, Wally Amos agreed not to use his own name or an image of himself on the cookies and not to speak ill of the company that owned his name. Wally Amos then moved to Hawaii and started another cookie company called the “Uncle Noname Cookie Co.” This case is an excellent demonstratin of the dangers of trademark ownership for companies.
