The world would be a better place if we all had children’s eyes. This is not because children’s eyes are too sharp to allow any blot(污点, 瑕疵)to pass without being 41 , but because adults have too many conflicting concerns to keep their eyes open to all wrongdoing.

Not long before, an examination, intended to 42 some police officers to higher positions, was held in Gansu province. Someone 43 with a good idea that 18 primary pupils could be invited to act as invigilators (监考人). At that age, students would do as they are told and act fearlessly. 44 , they caught 25 officers cheating on the spot, which has caused a stir (轰动,搅动) and 45 the question of whether adult invigilators would 46 their duties as well.

The implication of this event goes 47 its impact on the work style of local police officers and the examinations. Most people said what these children have done points to the sad fact of 48 being less trustworthy. If adults acted as invigilators, they would quite 49 turn a blind eye to cheating.

We Chinese have been holding the 50 that human nature was good at birth: as 51 of blot as a sheet of blank paper, which can be 52 with content (good or bad) in the process of growing up. Everything should be done on the basis of certain principles. 53 , nowadays the repeated reports of cheating in examinations, selling ranks and 54 and embezzling (挪用) public funds paint a 55 picture of common social morals. Adults have become too concerned with their own personal gains to 56 basic sense of principles. When no one 57 any principle and the only concern is personal interest, everyone will 58 , not only those who first break the rules.

Besides, cheats are unfair to honest examinees, and when the success of cheats 59 more people to cheat, the consequences will be disastrous.

In a word, we adults need to have our eyes as 60 as children’s on matters of principle.

WHEN there are some strangers in front of us, which of them will we trust?

According to a new study in the online PLOS One, people make their decisions to trust others largely based on their faces. Your appearance can do a lot for you, especially if you are in the financial industry. The more trustworthy you look, the more likely people will buy what you’re selling.

Researchers from Britain’s University of Warwick Business School, University College London, and Dartmouth College, US, did a number of experiments.

The research team used computer software to make 40 faces, from the least to the most trustworthy-looking.

The study said that the difference between a trustworthy face and one that isn’t as trustworthy comes from features that look slightly angry or slightly happy, even when the face is at rest. However, a slightly happy face is more likely to be trusted.

Researchers gave participants some money and asked them which face they trusted to invest the money for them. Then researchers gave some good and bad information about the people with these faces, and asked the participants again whom they trusted.

The results showed that even if they got different information, the participants didn’t change their choices. They were still more likely to invest their money with the more trustworthy-looking faces.

Chris Olivola, one of the study’s authors, said in the University of Warwick’s press release: ―It seems we are still willing to go with our own instincts about whether we think someone looks like we can trust them. The temptation to judge strangers by their faces is hard to resist.‖

The only survivor of one of the two Sandy Hook Elementary School first-grade classrooms where Adam Lanza shot and killed 20 children tricked the gunman by playing dead, the girl’s pastor (牧师) said.

―She ran out of the school building covered from head to toe with blood and the first thing she said to her mom was, ―Mommy, I’m OK but all my friends are dead‖ Pastor Jim Solomon told ABC News’ Lara Spencer this weekend.

―Somehow, at that moment, by God’s grace, she was able to act as she was already dead.‖ he said.

The girl, a 6-year-old whose name is not being announced for privacy (隐私) reasons, was the first student to appear from the lockdown (封锁) at Sandy Hook, Solomon said. He said the young girl described the shooter to her mom in a way that only a young child can.

―Well, she saw someone who she felt was angry and someone she felt was very mad,‖Solomon said. ―I think it’s impossible without the help of God. She has wisdom beyond her years, for sure’’.

Of the 20 children killed on Friday, eight were boys and l2 were girls. Six staff members, all female, were also killed. The gunman, whose mother was also killed by him before he went to the schoo1 classrooms, was found dead at the present spot.

―The mom told me— and I thought this was very insightful (有深刻见解的) — that she was suffering from what she felt was survivor’s guilt because so many of her friends no longer have their children but she has hers,‖ Solomon said how the girl’s mother and father are handling the trauma (伤害).―I don’t know whether I would have the type of faith that they have if the same thing happened to me.‖

Fans of US television dramas watch their favorite series for different reasons: some want to improve their English skills, others just want to kill time.

Some TV series are more than pure entertainment ― they have a certain depth. Mad Men, which returned with a sixth season recently; Monday Mornings, which just finished its first season; and Modern Family, which sweeps the awards every year, are just a few examples.

Why do these shows stand out among so many similar ones? TV critics Raymond Zhou will give you an idea of why some shows are better than others.

Period drama — More than time travel

Period dramas are intended to capture the ambience (气氛) of a particular era. Directors must therefore attract audiences as much by their recreation of a historical setting as by an interesting storyline.

Mad Men is an excellent example of this balance being struck. Set in New York during the 1960s, it accurately shows US attitudes in the workplace through the alcoholism and chain-smoking common of the time, and places an absorbing plot right in its center.

But rather than merely presenting a past decade, Mad Men’s subtle (微妙的) description of the struggles of white-collar workers at the time, both male and female, makes it stand out.

―The series’attention to detail is superb,‖ Raymond Zhou said. ―For example, creator Matthew Weiner makes Don Draper ― the leading role of the series ― drive a Buick instead of a Cadillac, because Weiner thinks the man lacks the self-pride to buy a luxury car. It’s this kind of attentiveness that raises the show’s artistic value.‖

Critics also recommend

Another period drama that works is Broadwalk Empire, set during the prohibition period of the 1920s and 1930s in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Heather Havrilesky at Salon magazine noted how the show ―revels in the oddities (怪事) of

its time, peeling back the layers of polite society to reveal a shadow world of criminals and politicians working together to keep the liquor flowing.‖ https://www.wendangku.net/doc/bb18588930.html,

Why does it appeal to viewers? Because they know that the ―liquor‖ is a metaphor (暗喻) for today’s political scandals (丑闻).

69. How many US TV series are mentioned in this passage?

A. One.

B. Two.

C. Three.

D. Four.

70. The following statements are the reasons why many people are attracted by US television dramas EXCEPT that __________.

A. US television dramas merely present a past decade

B. directors recreate a historical setting and adopt interesting storylines

C. the dramas can improve their English skills, and help people kill time

D. some TV series are more than pure entertainment, and they have a certain depth

71. According to Raymond Zhou, Don Draper’s driving a Buick instead of a Cadillac shows _________.

A. Mad Men attaches much importance to details

B. Mad Men places an absorbing plot right in its center

C. the director wants to raise the show’s artistic value

D. Mad Men’s description of the struggling white-collar workers makes it stand out

72. What does the passage mainly talk about?

A. Directors of US dramas.

B. US dramas and their storylines.

C. US period dramas to kill time.

D. US dramas and their magic touch.

D

My day started just like all the other days for the past 15 years where I get up, make some coffee, shower, get dressed and leave for the train station at exactly 7:35 A.M. to arrive at work by 8:30. While on the train I would always choose a seat away from the crowd so I can read the newspaper in peace and quiet. At work I am always being flooded with questions from coworkers, suppliers, telephone and then those dread meetings, so the last thing I need is some stranger to sit beside me and make small talk.

I don’t know why but for some reason when I got on the train today it was unusually full, something I don’t recall ever happening in the past. With hesitation I sat down in the only seat available beside a middle-aged man that had his head down and seemed to be lost in his thoughts.

I was glad that he didn’t notice when I sat next to him as he just continued to look down towards the floor.

Shortly after the train left for my 30-minute ride downtown I found myself wondering what this man was thinking about. What could be so important that he didn’t even see me sit next to him? I tried to forget about it and started to read my paper. However, for some strange reason this ―inner voice‖ kept urging me to talk to this man. I tried to ignore the ―voice‖ as there was no way I was starting a conversation with a complete stranger. https://www.wendangku.net/doc/bb18588930.html,

As you probably guessed I eventually broke down and came up with an excuse to ask him a question. When he raised his head and turned his eyes towards me I could see that he must have been really upset as he had red eyes and still had some tears rolling down the side of his face despite his weak attempt to wipe them away. I can’t describe the sadness I felt seeing someone in so much pain.

We talked for about 20 minutes and in the end he seemed to be doing better. As we were leaving the train he thanked me again and again for being an angel by taking the time to talk. I never did find out what was making his heart so heavy with pain but was glad I listened to the ―voice‖ that day.

Several weeks had passed when I noticed an envelope on my desk after returning from lunch. It was not addressed to anyone and only had the word ―Angel‖written on it. My receptionist attached a note saying a gentleman dropped it off saying he did not know my name but had described me well enough that the receptionist knew it was for me.

When I read the note inside the envelope I was so filled with emotions that I couldn’t contain myself. It was a letter from the man I met on the train thanking me again for talking to him and saving his life that day. Apparently he had some very hurtful personal problems that were so challenging that he was planning to take his life that day. In his letter he went on to explain that he was a religious person and in desperation screamed out to God that if God really cared about him he would send someone to prevent him from taking his life. In his eyes I was that someone, that Angel sent by God.

Not being a religious person myself I don’t know what that ―voice‖ was that made me take a chance and talk to a stranger but I do know that it made a difference in someone’s life that day. So the next time you feel desired for no apparent reason to talk to a friend, relative, neighbor or even a complete stranger please remember my story, you just may make a difference in someone’s life when you listen to your inner voice.

73. Why does the writer say ―I was glad that he didn’t notice when I sat next to him as he just continued to look down towards the floor.‖?

A. The stranger was lost in thoughts.

B. The writer preferred a peaceful trip circumstance.

C. The stranger seemed a bit abnormal that day.

D. The writer was anxious to arrive at work by 8:30.

74. Who does the underline word ―he‖ refer to?

A. The writer.

B. The stranger.

C. God.

D. Angel.

75. What can we infer from the passage?

A. The stranger sent a letter to the writer by post.

B. The writer was not religious.

C. Something inside the writer urged him/ her to have a talk with the stranger.

D. Listening to one’s inner voice sometimes counts.

第Ⅱ卷( 非选择题共50分)

第四部分任务型阅读(共10小题, 每小题1分, 共10分)

认真阅读下列短文, 并根据所读内容在文章后表格中填入最恰当的单词。注意:每空一词。

We see them everywhere – on boxes of food, on packages and on CDs. They, of course, are bar codes. The invention of bar codes has changed the way we shop and how companies learn where their products are.

Bar codes are quite a new invention. It was two American university students, Bernard Silver and Norman Woodland, who first got the idea of bar codes. In 1948, they heard that the president of a food company was looking for a way to easily get information about what was being sold to customers. They tried to help by using a code system. To make their codes, they drew circles on paper. They then invented a large electronic reader to read the codes. However, computers then were big and slow, so they couldn’t easily record the data that was read.

Then, in the 1960s, David Collins made important developments in bar codes. He developed a system for recognizing train carriages. In order to develop this technology for other kinds of businesses, Collins started his own company. In 1969, Collins’s company put a bar code reading system in a car factory, showing that bar codes could be useful.

Shortly after Collins started his company, an American electronic company called RCA also saw the potential of bar codes to help businesses. RCA’s system, which recorded how much of a product was sold, was not perfect. Since bar codes were not common, not all products had them and different companies used different codes. Then, Woodland helped develop the Universal Product Code (UPC), which gave every product a code that contained information about the manufacturer and the kind of product being sold. This made bar codes much more practical.

In addition to shops, hospitals use bar codes to identify patients by giving them cards with bar codes on them. Libraries use bar codes to record which books have been lent, and airports use them to determine where bags are going. Bar codes have made life much easier and simpler.

As we can see in the picture, an old man falls down on the street, but no one offers help to him. The passers-by fear that they will be mistaken for the trouble maker.

The picture reflects that many people are not willing to help the old who fall down on the street. Several factors may contribute to this phenomenon. Some people refuse to help the old because they don’t think they can give the old correct medical care due to a lack of professional

skills. Another major reason is that they are afraid of being charged with knocking him or her down and getting themselves into trouble if they help the old.

As for me, we should help the old who fall down on the street. As we all know, it is a traditional Chinese virtue to show respect for and take good care of the old. If we come across an old person who falls down on the street, we can lend him or her a helping hand by calling the medical care centre. I hope there will be less indifference and more warmth in our society.
