episode 1

Tracy:Hi and welcome to this week’s edition of Focus.

This is Tracy Woodstock and I’m standing in for Len

Dawson. He’s visiting some cities in Europe and I’m

sure he’s having a wonderful time. He’s coming back

next week and he’s going to tell you where he was

and what he saw.

Len:Hi, Tracy. Good to see you again.

Tracy:Hi, Len. What are you doing here?

Len:Well, Tracy, I believe I’m your first guest today. Tracy:Of course! But I thought you were on vacation in Europe. When did you come back?

Len:Two hours ago.

Tracy:You seem happy. Did you have a good time?

Len:Awesome, Tracy! I went to Rome, Paris…

Tracy:Did you see the Eiffel Tower?

Len:I sure did and I even went all the way to the top. It was wonderful.

Tracy:Stay with us, Len, and let’s meet our next guest. It’s Mr. Greg Perkins. He’s just in from the airport. Hi

there, Greg and where were you?

Greg:Hi, Tracy. Hi, Len. It’s so good to be here. I was in Tahiti.

Tracy:Did you get that bucket there?

Greg:What bucket?

Tracy:The bucket on your head.

Greg:Oh, that bucket? Just kidding. No, I didn’t get it in Tahiti. I got it in Trangipani.

Len:Trangipani? Where is that?

Greg:It’s a small island not very far from Tahiti. You see, on the way back from Tahiti, the plane developed

some technical problem, so we landed there. Tracy:Wow! How many hours did you stay there?

Greg:We were there twenty-four hours, so I went

exploring in the jungle.

Len:Interesting, I bet.

Tracy:Did you see any other people?

Greg:Not at first. But then I heard some noise coming from a clearing.

Tracy:What did you do?

Greg:I walked towards the clearing, then I saw a group of people. They all had buckets on their heads. Tracy:Like the one you have?

Greg:That’s right.

Tracy:Then what?

Greg:Two men ran towards me and they put a bucket on my head.

Tracy:But why did they have buckets on their heads? Greg:Well, later I learned it was a water ritual.

Tracy:What do you mean?

Greg:On the island of Trangipani it doesn’t rain very often, so the people sing and dance with buckets on their

heads and ask their gods for rain.

Tracy:I see. But Greg, why are you still wearing the bucket on your head?

Greg:It’s cute and I come from Arizona. We need some rain there, you know.

Len:Whatever helps, huh?

episode 2

Tracy:I’m very lucky I met you, Gwen. And thanks for giving me a hand with these bags.

Gwen:No problem, sis. But what do you have in here?

Hey, Trace! Are these vitamins?

Tracy:Yes, they are. Do you ever take any?

Gwen:Oh, no. I get all the vitamins I need from the food I eat. Besides, these are too expensive for me to buy. Tracy:No, I don’t think so. Believe it or not, there are 100 pills in that bottle, so it’s much cheaper than it seems. Gwen:Mmm… Tracy, I’m starving!

Tracy:Me too. Let’s have something to eat.

Gwen:What do you have?

Tracy:I have a lot of different things. How about a yogurt and cucumber salad?

Gwen:Ugh! That’s too healthy for me.

Tracy:Well, it has very few calories.

Gwen:Definitely not enough for me.

Tracy:We can also have some steamed carrots.

Gwen: Yuk!

Tracy:Well, I could make some vegetarian tortillas. Gwen:What’s in them?

Tracy:Tomatoes, onions, peas, corn, a little garlic, and lots of herbs.

Gwen:Is that all?

Tracy:What do you mean? The tortillas I make are full of vitamins and very healthy.

Gwen:How about having some sausages and lots of French fries along with the tortillas?

Tracy:Forget it! That’s very unhealthy, Gwen. I never eat that kind of food.

Gwen:Oh, I know, Tracy, but I don’t really like any of those health foods.

Tracy:Come on, Gwen. Try eating a vegetarian dish for a change. They’re delicious you know.

Gwen:Like what?

Tracy:Chinese stir-fry for example.

Gwen:I don’t think that’s tasty enough for me.

Tracy:Well, the only other thing I could make is boiled okra with pureed eggplant served on a large lettuce

leaf.

Gwen:You know what, Trace? I’m going. Do you want to come with me?

Tracy:Where are you going?

Gwen:To have a double Big Mac of course! That’s the kind of food I like to eat.

Tracy:Gwen! Do you really think you get all the vitamins you need from that kind of food?

episode 3

Tracy:Oh, Gwen. I’m so glad you’re here.

Gwen:That makes a change. What’s wrong?

Tracy:Are you kidding? Look at me.

Gwen:Oh, my God! Your face is orange!

Gwen:I don’t know. Let me think.

Gwen:Is that all?

Tracy:Well, she told me not to worry because it’s probably nothing serious.

Gwen:Oh, yes, Tracy. You shouldn’t worry and you should get some rest.

Police Officer:Were you scared of the clown? Why? Tracy:Well, I was alone in the apartment. I asked

him what this was all about but he didn’t

say a word. He just looked at me in a very

strange way.

Police Officer:Why didn’t you close the door?Tracy:I tried, but his foot was blocking it. I was

very frightened.

Police Officer:And then what happened?

Tracy:He started singing.

Police Officer:What did he sing?

Tracy:He sang Happy Birthday To You.

Police Officer:Is it your birthday today?

Tracy:No, it isn’t.

Police Officer:That’s strange. What then?

Tracy:While he was singing, he was trying to get in. I

panicked and I started screaming.

Police Officer:Then what happened?

Tracy:As soon as I started screaming, he ran away.

That’s when I called the police.

Police Officer:You did the right thing.

Tracy:Perhaps… but I was just thinking.

Police Officer:Thinking what?

Tracy:Was the clown playing a joke on me or did he

make a mistake and sing Happy Birthday to

the wrong person?

Police Officer:Well, Miss, I think…

Tracy:Excuse me. Hello… Hi, Gwen… What? ... I

see… OK. Bye. Our clown is singing again. Police Officer: What?

Tracy:This time he found the right person to sing

Happy Birthday to. It’s my sister. It’s her

birthday today.

episode 5

Tracy:Do you like exercising? Have you ever gone to a gym on a regular basis? This is Talk to Tracy with

Tracy Woodstock and today I’m here at the Nautilus

Fitness Club. With me is Chuck, one of the personal

trainers here. Hi, Chuck.

Chuck:Hi, Tracy.

Tracy:How long have you worked here, Chuck?

Chuck:For about four years. Actually, since the gym

opened.

Tracy:Tell me, Chuck, do you work every day?

Chuck:You bet. It’s so busy here. I haven’t had a day off for weeks.

Tracy:Can you tell me what you actually do?

Chuck:Lots of things. I organize individual workouts for people and supervise while they are working out. I

give aerobics classes, I…

Tracy:Oh, do you have a class today?

Chuck:Yeah. It’s starting in about 20 minutes. You can join the group if you like.

Tracy:Thanks. You know, I did some aerobics when I was in college, but I’ve never been in a group before. Chuck:Oh, it’s great fun.

Tracy:Could you tell me what kind of people come here at the Nautilus Fitness Club?

Chuck:Well, people of all ages. Some people have put on weight and they want to lose a few pounds. Most

people come here because they want to stay fit and

healthy and they like exercising.

Tracy:Mm… I see there is a lot of equipment here. Chuck:There certainly is. Would you like to try some? Tracy:Um.. well, why not?

Chuck:OK. Follow me. Have you ever tried the treadmill? Tracy:No, I haven’t tried it before.

Chuck:Would you like to give it a try?

Tracy:Um… Sure.

Chuck:Don’t tell me you are tired already.

Tracy:No, no, it’s not that, but I’d like to try something else, too. Perhaps something I can sit on.

Chuck:How about that? Have you ever tried cycling? Tracy:Yeah, but not this kind of thing.

Chuck:Have a go at it.

Tracy:This is a good warm-up exercise, right?

Chuck:Yes, it is. Make sure you spend at least ten minutes on one of these warm-up exercises before starting a

work-out.

Tracy:Mm…Well, Chuck, this is all very interesting but it seems we’re out of time. Thanks for talking to me. Chuck:My pleasure.

episode 6

Len:Good evening, ladies and gentlemen and welcome to Quiz Time, the quiz show with the biggest money

prizes. Back with us tonight is Kerry Rice who was

still coming up with correct answers at the end of

last week’s show. Nice to have you back, Kerry. Kerry:Nice to be here again, Len.

Len:Kerry, you have already won 55,000 dollars. How do you feel?

Kerry:Very happy, I guess.

Len:Are you ready for your first question tonight? Kerry:I hope so, Len.

Len:The category this time is shopping. So, Kerry, can you tell me which is the most expensive shopping

street in the world? Is it Oxford Street in London, is

it 57th Street in New York, or is it Fifth Avenue in

New York?

Kerry:Well, I know that Oxford Street is less expensive than 57th Street and Fifth Avenue is more expensive

than 57th Street. So the answer is Fifth Avenue. Len:Well done, Kerry! Now a question about Hollywood for another $5,000. Can you tell me, Kerry, which

male actor had the most leading roles ever? Kerry:That’s an easy one. It was John Wayne who played the lead in 142 movies.

Len:That is correct. Congratulations. This evening you are proving that you are the best player ever on Quiz

Time, Kerry. The category now is transportation.

Can you tell me, Kerry, which of the following holds

the record for the busiest airport in the world?

London Heathrow, Chicago O’Hare or Los Angeles

International?

Kerry:Well, it’s not Los Angeles International because it’s not as busy as Chicago O’Hare. As for London

Heathrow, it’s probably the busiest airport in Europe,

but I don’t think it holds the world record.

Len: So?

Kerry:I will say Chicago O’Hare.

Len:That is correct. Well done, Kerry. So far you have won $70,000, that’s more than any other contestant

this year.

Kerry:Wow! I sure am richer than when I first came on the show.

Len:You certainly are. And that tells us it’s jackpot time. Here is your opportunity, Kerry, to double your

money. All you need to do is answer the next question

correctly. However, if you answer incorrectly, you will

lose everything. So, what do you say?

Kerry:I’ll take that chance, Len.

Len:OK, Kerry. So, for the highest cash prize ever offered on this show, the category is geography.

Kerry:Oh dear, it’s not my best subject but I suppose I’m ready.

Len:Kerry, which is the longest European river? Is it the Danube, is it the Volga, or is it the Rhine?

Kerry:Mmm… I’m not 100% sure but I think it’s the Danube.

Len:So, is that your final answer?

Kerry:Yes, I’ll say the Danube.

Len:Kerry, I’m sorry but the Volga is longer than the Danube. There is no money prize for you, but there

is a consolation prize. You can take this stylish

garden furniture with you.

episode 7

Len:Here are the keys to my apartment, Mom.

Remember I’m going to be away till next Friday. Mom: I remember, Len. I’ll go and water your plants every day.

Len: Good.

Mom: What time is your flight?

Len:At 8:35. But I have to be at the airport at around 7:30.

Mom: Are you sure you have everything?

Len:Yes, Mom.

Mom: Would you like a sandwich?

Len:No thanks.

Mom: But you must eat something.

Len:I don’t want to eat anything right now.

Mom: I’ll make you a sandwich to take with you on your trip.

Len:I don’t need a sandwich. They’ll serve us dinner during the flight.

Mom: Oh, Len, you look tired. You need some sleep. Len:I can sleep on the plane.

Mom: It’s 6:30. You mustn’t be late.

Len:I don’t have to rush, Mom. There’s plenty of time. Mom: You need to call a taxi.

Len:No, Mom. I don’t need to call a taxi. I’ve already done that.

Mom: Len... what are you doing?

Len:What do you mean?

Mom: You know you can’t smoke in here.

Len:Sorry, I forgot. Can I smoke in the kitchen? Mom: No, you can’t. And remember you can’t smoke on the plane either.

Len:You don’t have to tell me. I know that.

Mom: Are you thirsty? Can I get you something to drink? Len:No, thanks. I’m fine.

Mom: The taxi isn’t here yet. Are you sure you called for one?

Len:Calm down, Mom. Of course I did.

Mom: I can call to make sure if you like.

Len:Thanks but you don’t need to.

Mom: You know… you don’t have to take a taxi. I can drive you.

Len:Mom, you haven’t driven for years!

Mom: That’s true. Are you sure I can’t do anything for you? Len:As a matter of fact, Mom, there is something you can do.

Mom: What is it, dear?

Len:You can just stop worrying!

episode 9

Tracy:So, this is the bowling alley you were telling me about.

Len:This is it. What do you think?

Tracy:Yeah… it’s a nice place.

Len:I told you it’s perfect for the shooting you want. Tracy:Yes, but on the other hand, I think it might be a bit too noisy.

Len:Don’t worry, that can be fixed in the studio. Tracy:It will be all right if I can get the right people to interview.

Len:Don’t worry about that. There are always lots of interesting young people here. If you like, I can

arrange a shooting for next week.

Tracy:All right.

Len:So, what do you think? Would you like to have a game?

Tracy:Are you crazy?

Len: Why?

Tracy:I’ve never played before. And, in addition, I don’t have the right shoes.

Len:What size are you?

Tracy:Size seven.

Len:No problem. Are you ready to play?

Tracy:On one condition.

Len:What’s that?

Tracy:That you will not laugh.

Len:It’s a deal.

Tracy:OK. What do I do now?

Len:Put your fingers in the holes.

Tracy:Like this?

Len: Perfect.

Tracy:I’m not sure about this. OK. What next?

Len:You raise the ball behind you and then throw it towards the pins.

Tracy:The ball is quite heavy. Why don’t you go first? Len:OK, I’ll go first. Watch how I do it so you don’t end up getting hurt.

Tracy:If I get hurt, then you will have to do the shooting for me.

Len:Very funny.

Tracy:Do you play a lot?

Len:You bet!

Tracy:Well, if you’re so good, then I might not play. Len:There you go again.

Tracy:Not bad.

Len:I don’t care. I have another throw. Don’t say a word.Tracy:Of course not. It could happen to anyone.

Len:Your turn.

Tracy:OK. Right. Y es! Len, is that what we call a strike? Len:I say, let’s call it a day.

episode 10

Len:Hi, this is Len Dawson and welcome to another edition of Focus. Our guest today is Janice Foster, a

career advisor who has been helping and advising

young people for a number of years. I’m very happy

you are here tonight.

Janice: So am I, Len. As always, I enjoy being on your show. Len:Janice, helping youngsters with their career choices is your life’s work, isn’t it?

Janice: Yes, Len. I’ve been doing it for a long time.

Len:I’m sure it has been very rewarding.

Janice: Certainly. Don’t forget a career advisor plays an important role in young people’s career decisions. Len:Tonight, we have chosen a young man from our audience who is graduating from college this year,

Tom Burnside. Welcome to the show, Tom.

Tom:Thank you, Mr. Dawson.

Len:So, Tom, what are you studying?

Tom: Accounting.

Len:Do you find it hard?

Tom:Oh, no. It’s a piece of cake. But that’s not the

problem.

Len:So there is a problem.

Tom:Well, my father has always wanted me to follow in his footsteps and become an accountant, but I really

don’t like accounting...

Len:I don’t either. I think it’s terrible.

Janice: Yes, but that’s not the point, Len. So, Tom, you’ve realized that accounting is not what you want to do. Tom:Sort of. You see, I’ve been acting in amateur plays and I really love it.

Len:Wow! I do too. I think we have many things in common, Tom.

Janice: How long have you been acting?

Tom: A long time. Since I was a kid.

Janice: And now you’re thinking of a career in acting, right? Tom: Yes.

Len:Do you think you’re good at it, Tom?

Tom:Well, people always tell me I should go professional. Len:Mmm, that sounds good. So, what’s your advice, Janice?

Janice: Tom, my advice to you and to all young people is to follow your dreams. If you love what you’re doing,

continue doing it.

Tom:But what will I tell my father?

Len:That is a problem. I don’t think he’s going to be crazy about a career in acting.

Janice: Neither do I but… to Tom’s father, I say… Tom will hold a degree in something he will always be able to

do, but the most important thing is that he should

do what he really wants in his life. And, believe me,

he needs your support in his choice of career.

Len:That’s our show for today. Thank you both for being with us.

episode 11

Tracy:What’s the matter, Gwen? Are you feeling under the weather?

Gwen:Not exactly.

Tracy:There isn’t anything wrong with you, is there? Gwen:No. I’m just having trouble sleeping at night.

11

Transcripts Network Teacher’s Guide Pre-Intermediate

Tracy:How bad is it? You don’t stay awake all night, do you?

Gwen:Sometimes. What can I do?

Tracy:Try drinking some warm milk before you go to bed. Gwen:Don’t you think I’ve already tried that? Any other suggestions?

Tracy:Well, have you tried reading for a while before you turn the light off?

Gwen:I have, but it doesn’t seem to work for me. Tracy:You look sleepy. Why don’t you try going to bed early tonight?

Gwen:I might. You know, I really feel down in the dumps. Tracy:Is there anything I can do to cheer you up? Gwen:I’m not sure. You see, Tracy, I don’t like being by myself.

Tracy:Oh, so you’re lonely. Well, you could always move back home.

Gwen:Are you crazy? And have Mom and Dad nagging me all the time? I could come and live here, couldn’t I? Tracy:No, no. I have worked hard for this apartment. I’m not sharing it with anyone.

Gwen:Why isn’t anybody kind to me?

Tracy:That’s not true, Gwen. Anyway, remember that first of all, you should be kind to yourself.

Gwen:Oh, what’s wrong with me?

Tracy:Nothing that a good night’s sleep won’t fix. Gwen:Do you mind if I have another cup of coffee? Tracy:That isn’t a really good idea, is it?

Gwen:Why not?

Tracy:Haven’t you ever heard that coffee keeps you awake?

Gwen:Not if it’s decaf.

Tracy:Gwen, I really think you should go home now and get some sleep.

Gwen:But how?

Tracy:Haven’t you ever heard of counting sheep? episode 12

Hundreds of people have lost their homes and many are

in the hospital after a tornado hit the town of Wakeville, South Carolina, earlier this afternoon.

The tornado also caused huge problems on Route 28. It was so powerful that some cars were blown across the road smashing into others. It even lifted some cars in the air and dropped them into nearby fields.

The tornado also uprooted many trees which blocked the roads for a while. Fortunately, firefighters had cleared most of the roads before any accidents happened.

However, firefighters couldn’t do anything about a house that burned down near the edge of town. Fire broke out when the tornado caused a gas explosion in the house. Luckily, the family living there had left their home before the flames swept through it.

Now, what you are watching is a home video sent in to Channel TV. Here we can see the actual tornado itself, just seconds before it hit Wakeville. Look at that! What a sight! I’ve seen quite a few tornados in my time, but I must say this one is the most terrifying.

Let’s take another look at that. You can clearly see the funnel-shaped cloud forming there. How amazing these pictures are! And it’s thanks to one of our viewers, Mr. John Olden, that you can see these pictures, just hours after the tornado hit. episode 13

Tracy:Hi, we’re doing a survey for Channel TV. Could I ask you a few questions?

Robin:I guess so.

Tracy:What’s your name?

Robin: Robin.

Tracy:What do you do, Robin?

Robin:I’m a construction worker.

Tracy:Do you wish you had a different job?

Robin:No, I don’t think so.

Tracy:Mmm, OK. Do you have many friends?

Robin:Yeah, I do.

Tracy:Tell me, Robin, how would you describe the perfect friend?

Robin:You mean like a good buddy kind of friend? Tracy: Exactly.

Robin:Well, for one thing, I’d wish he were a good bowler. Tracy: A better bowler than you are?

Robin:Well, that depends.

Tracy:On what?

Robin:If he were bowling against me… no. But if he were on my team, I wouldn’t mind if he bowled better

than I did.

Tracy:What other qualities would you like him to have? Robin:If he were the perfect friend, I would want him to be loyal and honest.

Tracy:Do you wish your friends were different?

Robin:No, I like them as they are, I just wish they bowled more often.

Tracy:Why don’t they?

Robin:Most of them are married and they don’t go out much. Now, if they were still single, they’d probably

go bowling more.

Tracy:Are you married?

Robin: No.

Tracy:If you were married, would you go bowling as often?

Robin: Absolutely.

Tracy:Would you marry a girl if she didn’t like bowling? Robin:Absolutely not. If I got married, she would have to love the game.

Tracy:I can tell bowling is an important part of your life. Robin:It sure is. You got that right.

Tracy:If you had the chance to change something about yourself, what would that be?

Robin:I’d probably wish I were less of a fanatic.

Tracy:About what?

Robin:About bowling, of course.

Tracy:Then why don’t you try to find something else that interests you?

Robin:What? And not have time to bowl?

episode 14

Len: Hi.

Tracy:Welcome back. How was your vacation?

Len:I can’t say it was great. In fact, it was awful. Tracy:Oh no. Why?

Len:Well, for starters, Betty told me she had made a reservation for an ocean front room.

Tracy: And?

Len:When I got to the hotel, the receptionist told me that they had given the last room to someone else

the previous day.

Tracy:What did you do then?

Len:I told her that my office had made a reservation for the room weeks before.

Tracy:Did she give you another ocean front room?

Len:She said there were not any available and that the hotel was full. She asked me to try another hotel.

12

13

Transcripts Network Teacher’s Guide Pre-Intermediate

Tracy: So what happened then?Len: I complained to the manager.Tracy: Did he arrange for another room?

Len:

At first, he told me that all the rooms were full from the day before. Then he asked me when I had made my reservation. I told him that my room had been reserved weeks before.

Tracy: So did he finally give you a room?

Len: Not until I told him I was Len Dawson from Channel TV and that the station was planning a report on resort hotels, including his.Tracy: That was a good one.

Len: It worked like a charm. He suddenly discovered that there was an ocean front room available.Tracy: So why was the vacation awful?

Len: It began to rain and it didn’t stop the whole time I was there.

Tracy: I thought the weather girl had said that there would be sunny skies for the next two weeks.Len:

I guess she was wrong.

Tracy: That’s too bad.

Len: After a week, I had enough and decided to leave.Tracy: And did you?

Len:

I tried to, but when I called the airline, they said there were no flights due to a strike, so I had to stay for another two days.

Tracy: What bad luck!Len: However, I realized something, Tracy.Tracy: What was that?Len: It wasn’t the hotel or the rainy weather that made

this vacation so awful.

Tracy: What was it then?Len: You see, when you go on vacation, the most

important thing is to have the right company.

Tracy: And?Len: Well, when I was there, I often thought: “If Tracy

were here with me, it would be much better.”

Tracy: Why, Len Dawson, are you trying to tell me

something?
