People are seeking for opportunities that will assist them in reaching their goals. Marketing yourself is when there is a demand for you and your services that will help you achieve your goals. Though when people talk about marketing, they usually think that this is about producing a sale. But, it does not necessarily have to be.

If you are an employee then you want your boss to take your ideas, and if you are on a job hunting then you want to find a good position. So in reality, marketing really leads to sale. Therefore, marketing yourself

means you are simply ―selling‖ yourself!

The common problem in marketing yourself is that most people think that it is unpleasant to market themselves. They think that marketing concerns only to a business. Of course, this is absolutely not true. People who want to attain the success they desire must promote themselves.

Marketing yourself is a useful tool. The better you market yourself, the more opportunities you will have. Marketing yourself does not really mean telling every person how beautiful and wonderful you are. It means letting your prospective employer know that you exist or you can do something better.

There are actually several different ways of marketing yourself. But there are only two primary approaches that you carry out. The first is to find ways to reach out to others and the second is to construct ways in order for the people to find you and make connection with you.

To reach out and touch the lives of others, you have to be a good person and a good employee. In that way your good reputation will follow naturally. Have a brief and concise message that you can share with others. When you market yourself, you tell people who you are and what you can do for others. Plan well and practice your message.

In constructing ways for the people to notice and make connection with you, you must be open to them. Communication is a great opportunity to make an impact especially when you market yourself. You also communicate by what you are wearing. Know the appropriate dress code and have plenty of time to decide what you will wear. Just remember to make a great first impression!

41. What is the main idea of the passage?

A. the reasons for marketing yourself.

B. the subject of marketing yourself.

C. the Ways of marketing yourself.

D. the uses of Marketing yourself.

42. According to the passage, as to marketing themselves, most people tend to feel ______.

A. confident

B. cheerful

C. terrible

D. appropriate

43. Which of the following statements about marketing yourself is TRUE according to the passage?

A. Marketing yourself means selling yourself to an employer.

B. Marketing yourself requires specific and detailed information.

C. Marketing yourself helps to raise the chance of getting a job.

D. Marketing yourself is intended to wear appropriate dresses.

44. In order to market yourself well, you can do these things EXCEPT ______.

A. be open to others

We keep reading that TV is bad for you. If this is true, how come the current generation of TV-addicted kids is much smarter than we are? In my home, the only people who can work the remote control are the children.

Perhaps TV does educate you. For example, you learn a useful medical fact: A person who has been shot alwa ys has time to speak an incomplete sentence before he dies. ―The killer was…‖ (dies) But I guess the biggest things we learn from TV can be regarded as ―Life Skills‖. Bad things only happen on dark and stormy nights. Emotional breakdowns cause people to wander in the heavy rain without umbrellas. And contrary to what scientists say, the crack(霹雳) of lightning and the accompanying flash happen at exactly the same time, wherever you are.

I‘ve even acquired useful geographical facts from science-fiction shows: Aliens speak English no matter which planet they come from.

Making use of what we learn from TV can improve our security. Consider these truths. If you are ever attacked by 2 0 bad guys, don‘t worry about being outnumbered. The criminals will han g back and take turns to approach you in ones and twos just so you can conveniently defeat them all. Bad guys who are completely covered in black clothes always remove their black masks to reveal that they are in fact, aha, women.

TV also teaches us important information about escaping from danger. Watch and learn. (1) If anyone is running after you down a passage, you will find that boxes have been conveniently placed near all the walls you need to jump over. (2) If you are tall and handsome, you can run from any number of armed criminals, and every shot will miss you.

Be warned, however. If your name card says ―henchman‖ (帮凶) and you are part of a group of plain-looking people trying to catch a handsome individual, a single shot will kill you. But don‘t be anxious: TV also delivers useful information for bad guys. All cars are inflammable (易燃的) and have amazing shock absorbers that enable them to fly into the air and land without damage — except police cars.

TV even teaches us about TV. Whenever anyone turns on a TV, it shows a news flash about someone they know. They then turn the box off immediately after that news item.

50. By saying ―A person who has been shot always has time to speak an incomplete sentence before he dies‖ (Paragraph 2), the writer shows his________.

A. humor

B. sympathy

C. deep concern

D. medical knowledge

51. We can learn from Paragraph 3 that in the real world_______.

A. bad things cause people to break down in the rain

B. bad things never happen on dark and stormy nights

C. people with emotional problems like to walk in the rain without umbrellas

D. the crack of lightning and the accompanying flash don‘t happen at the same time

52. On TV what usually happens when a person turns it on?

A. The news shown is always about someone the person knows.

B. The person always turns off the TV when it‘s time for news.

C. The program shown is always about the importance of TV.

D. TV always shows news about famous people.

53. What‘s the main idea of this passage?

A. Life skills can be learned from TV.

B. TV plays an important role in society.

C. Watching TV makes people more creative.

D. What happens in TV is very different from reality.

54. The writer of this passage takes a(n) _______ attitude towards TV plays.

A. positive

B. casual

C. negative

D. indifferent

D

I was puzzled! Why was this old woman making such a fuss about an old copse which was of no use to anybody? She had written letters to the local paper, even to a national, protesting about a projected by-pass to her village, and, looking at a map, the route was now here near where she lived and it wasn‘t as if the area was attractive. I was more than puzzled, I was curious.

The enquiry into the route of the new by-pass to the village was due to take place shortly, and I wanted to know what it was that motivated her. So it was that I found myself knocking on a cottage door, being received by Mary Smith and then being taken for a walk to the woods.

―I‘ve always loved this place,‖ she said, ―it has a lot of memories for me, and for others. We all used it. They calle d it ?Lovers lane‘. It‘s not much of a lane, and it doesn‘t go anywhere important, but that‘s why we all came here. To be away from people, to be by ourselves. ‖ she added.

It was indeed pleasant that day and the songs of many birds could be heard. Squirrels watched from the branches, quite bold in their movements, obviously few people passed this way and they had nothing to fear.

I could imagine the noise of vehicles passing through these peaceful woods when the by-pass was built, so I felt that she probably had something there but as I hold strong opinions about the needs of the community over-riding the opinions of private individuals, I said nothing. The village was quite a dangerous place because of the traffic especially for old people and children, their safety was more important to me than an old woman‘s strange ideas.

―Take this tree,‖ she said pausing after a short while. ―To you it is just that, a tree. Not unlike many others here.‖ She gently touched the bark, ―Look here, under this branch, what can you see?‖

―It looks as if someone has done a bit of carving with a knife.‖ I said after a cursory inspection.

―Yes, that‘s what it is!‖ she said softly.

She went on, ―He had a penknife with a spike for getting stones from a horse's hoof, and I h elped him to carve them. We were very much in love, but he was going away, and could not tell me what he was

involved in the army. I had guessed of course. It was the last evening we ever spent together, because he went away the next day, back to his Unit.‖

Mary Smith was quiet for a while, then she sobbed. ―His mother showed me the telegram. ?Sergeant R Holmes …Killed in action in the invasion of France.‘…‖

―I had hoped that you and Robin would one day get married.‖ she said, ―He was my only child, and I would have loved to be a Granny, they would have been such lovely babies‘- she was like that! ‖

―Two years later she too was dead. ?Pneumonia (肺炎), following a chill on the chest‘ was what the doctor said, but I think it was an old fashioned broken hear t. A child would have helped both of us.‖

There was a further pause. Mary Smith gently caressed the wounded tree, just as she would have caressed him. ―And now they want to take our tree away from me.‖ Another quiet sob, then she turned to me. ―I was youn g and pretty then, I could have had anybody, I wasn‘t always the old woman you see here now. I had everything I wanted in life, a lovely man, health and a future to look forward to.‖

She paused again and looked around. The breeze gently moved through the leaves with a sighing sound. ―There were others, of course, but no one can match my Robin!‖ she said strongly. ―And now I have nothing - except the memories this tree holds. If only I could get my hands on that awful man who writes in the paper about the value of the road they are going to build where we are standing now, I would tell him. Has he never loved, has he never lived, does he not know anything about memories? We were not the only ones, you know, I still meet some who came here as Robin and I d id. Yes, I would tell him!‖

I turned away, sick at heart.

Five Happiness Secrets For Tough Times

Sonja Lyubomirsky, an author, has researched the science of happiness for years. Here are her tips to help you cope with a bad economy, and increase your bursts of happiness throughout the day.

61. ________________

―You could spend a lot of time thinking deeply,‖ says Lyubomirsky. ―But that just makes you feel even more pessimistic, more out of control, and affects your self esteem. Your relationships will suffer and your job performance will suffer.‖

Get rid of pessimism. One of the most effective ways to cope when things are difficult is to adopt a positive thinking strategy. ―What can I learn from this? Times are tough, I‘ve been furloughed at work, but

I can spend more time with the kids, adopt a new hobby, or learn a new set of skills.‖

62. ________________

Now more than ever we need each other to survive. Lyubomirsky found that doing good things for friends, family, or strangers can make you happier. Think of practical, everyday gestures that can make someone‘s life a little bit easier. For example, Lyubomirsky says, ―Maybe now many of us can‘t afford to take a cab to the airport, so offer to give a friend a ride.‖

63. ________________

You don‘t need an expert to tell you that relationships are critical to happiness. Not being the bread-winner anymore or not being able to fulfill your kid‘s needs can weigh down hard on your family life. But the trick is to stop feeling guilty and focus on caring for your loved ones.

―I was at a psychology confe rence where an expert was talking about the effects of this economy on families and how parents can‘t afford to buy their kids luxuries like toys anymore,‖ says Lyubomirsky. ―But what they don‘t realize is that kids don‘t care about toys — what they care about is parents being grumpy and taking it out on them.‖

64. ________________

―If you find a happy person you will find a project,‖ says Lyubomirsky. ―Happy people all have goals they care about.‖

Commit yourself to a project – whether it is a business you want to start or a dance you want to learn. But it‘s also important to remember to be flexible in these times. Don‘t get frustrated if circumstances are stopping you from meeting your goals. Adopt and change!

―If your spouse has lost their job you might have to change your goal,‖ says Lyubomirsky. ―Or you might have to learn a whole new skill for a new job.‖

65. ________________

When times are tough, it‘s easy to skip your regular workouts in favor of mopping in front of the TV and eating a bag of chip s. Your thinking is ―I have more important things to worry about right now than

looking good.‖

But carve out a small part of your day to give your body some TLC (Tender Loving Care). It will go a long way in boosting your happiness. ―Even if you can‘t afford to go to the gym,‖ Lyubomirsky says, ―take time out to exercise at home.‖

One possible version:

I chose to spread knowledge in a rural school rather than donate some used books and stationary, which I think shows equality and respect to those being helped.

On my arrival after a long and rough ride, I was greeted by excited students with great enthusiasm. They felt curious when I told them our plan to teach them scientific experiments.

It took a week before I was ready to start. I demonstrated, guided them to conduct the experiments and explained the principles. Looking at their widening eyes, I was happy to see that the seed of science had been planted in their hearts.
