一 Warming up

T: Hello, boys and girls! Welcome back to school and nice to see you again! Did you have a good time in your winter holidays?

Ss: Yes. Of course! (T: Judging by the smiles on your faces, I can tell all of you have spent a happy time, right?)

T: During the winter holidays, when did you feel most wonderful and excited? Who w ould like to tell us your opinion? Volunteers!

Ss: At the Spring Festival. (AHA. Great minds think alike)

T: Who can tell us why? (Volunteers!)

what do people usually do At the Spring Festival?

S1: Because it’s the most important festival in our country.

S2: Because I got much lucky money from my parents,

grandparents and my relatives.

S3: Because I needn’t study at festivals and there was lots of delicious food and fruit to eat.

S4: Because I met my cousins and old friends who I hadn’t seen for a long time and we had a very good time together.

S5: At the Spring Festival, people especially children ,dress up in new clothes.

T: Excellent work! I am glad to hear that. Let’s talk about what festivals or celebrations we have in our city or town? What part of a festival do you like best ---the activities ,the food ,the visits ,the things to see or the music?

S1: New Year Day(January 1st), Yuan Xiao Festival

(15 days after the Spring Festival).

T: Quite right. That’s the Lantern Festival. It’s the 15th day of the first lunar month. What do you usually do on the Lantern Festival?

S2: We eat special sweet dumplings called Yuan Xiao and enjoy displayed lanterns. S3: And we enjoy beautiful fireworks, too.

T: You have done a good job. What are the other festivals?

S4: International Women’s Day. It was on March 8.

S5: Arbor Day on March 12th.

S6: International Labor Day and Chinese Youth Day.

S7: International Children’s Day.

T: Yes. Very good. Next one?

S8: Army Day is on August 1st and Teachers’ Day is on September 10th.

S9: National Day on October 1st.

T: Excellent work! Those are all the legal holidays in our country.

Do you know our traditional festivals? List some of them, please.

Sa: The most important one is the Spring Festival.

T: Yes. It’s also called Lunar New Year. Anything else?

Sb: Qingming Festival in memory of the dead or the heroes on April the fifth.

T: It’s called Tomb Sweeping Festival. Another one?

Sc: Dragon Boat Festival on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month in memory of

the great poet — Qu Yuan.

Sd: Mid-Autumn Festival on the fifth day of the eighth lunar month.

T: You’ve done a good job, boys and girls! You have named many festivals.

I’m proud of you for you are so well-informed.

二 Play games

Now let’s play a game about FESTIVALS, do you like it? The rule is : I will first have a description of a festival, then you guess the name of it in English and write it down on the blackboard. The one who gets the first correct answer will win a prize. Would you like to have a try? OK , Look at the blackboard(screen). let’s start.

1 The first festival is a traditional Chinese festival. At night people will eat rice glue ball (汤圆) and children will carry a special lamp(灯,油灯) in a parade and enjoy beautiful fireworks. Who knows the answer?

2 The second festival is considered as a harvest festival when people admire(赞美,羡慕)the moon and eat moon cakes.

( Mid-autumn Festival )

3 The third festival is a national festival in memory of(纪念,追念) a great ancient poet(诗人),when people can watch boat races.

(the Dragon Boat Festival or the Duanwu Festival)

4 The fourth festival takes place(发生) in April when people like to play a trick (开玩笑,作弄)on others.

(Ap ril Fool’s Day)

5 The fifth festival is a Chinese festival which is held to honour the dead or satisfy(满足,使满意) the ancestors(祖先)。

(Qingming Festival or Tomb Sweeping Day)

6 The last festival is a religious(宗教的)western festival held to celebrate the birth of Jesus(耶稣),when children often sing the song Gingle Bells.

7 The festival is on the fourth Thursday in November and people will celebrate it with

a feast(盛宴)among friends and families .They eat turkey too.(Thanksgiving Day)

8 On which festival people will eat pumpkin pie and dress up(盛装,打扮) in scary clothes and masks(面具), for example, dress up like a witch(巫婆).. (Halloween) Almost of you have done very well. Thank you again and I hope these lucky gifts can bring you good luck!

三 Group work

Since we have known some important festivals in the world, now let’s work in groups. Four students a group, make a list of the festivals you know as many as possible. Discuss when they take place, what they celebrate and one thing that people do at that time. Then tell the group which festival is your favourite and why. The first one is

given to you as an example.

The group that does the best will be given a prize.

A: Li Mei, when does the Spring Festival usually take place?

B: Well, the date is a little different every year, but it usually happens at the end of January or the beginning of February.

A: What do you usually do to celebrate it?

B: My whole family gets together- my grandparents, all my aunts and uncles, and all my cousins. We usually talk about what we’ve done in the past year. Then we cook

a lot of food.

A: What special food do you eat?

B: We almost always make and eat dumplings. That’s the most traditional Spring Festival food.

A: What is the origin of Spring Festival?

B: Well, there are several old stories about Spring Festival. In old Chinese stories, the re was a monster named Nian who would come into towns at the end of the year and frighten people. Sometimes he would eat them.

At some point, people discovered that the monster Nian was frightened of loud noises and the colour red. They began to put red paper on their doors and set of firecrackers. It became the tradition to do this every year to frighten the monster away from

the town.

A: Wow! That’s an amazing story! Why is Spring Festival such an important holiday in China?

B: I guess it’s like Christmas in Western countries. It’s the most important family

holiday all year.

T: Boys and girls you did very well today. We have talked about many festivals around the world. I hope you can go over them and learn customs about these festivals. If possible, collect more information about festivals around the world from the newspaper and the Internet.
