Introduction to the AMSOIL Lubricant
Description and Cross Reference Guide The following guidelines should always be utilizedwhen using this Lubricant Description and Cross Reference Guide.
1.Proper lubricant application requires a working knowledge of the equipment being lubricated. This guide is
only a tool that may be used to help in selecting the proper lubricant. Many other factors such as operating
conditions must also be considered.Be sure that you have read and understand the
“Caution/Disclaimer”statement found on page 4.
2.Viscosity Grades may be listed as “SAE”, “ISO”or “NLGI”grade numbers.Occasionally, the actual lubricant
viscosity will not fall within established grade parameters. In those cases, the viscosity will be listed as its
viscosity at 40o C, and called ISO grade. For example, an oil with a viscosity of 39 cSt @ 40o C is neither
ISO 32 nor ISO46, which are the recognized grades. Therefore, the oil will be listed as ISO 46, a
non-recognized grade indicating its actual viscosity at 40o C.
3.Because API service categories change frequently, competitor brands may not reflect their current
specification. For example, an oil listed as meeting API SH/CD may have been upgraded so it now meets
API SL/https://www.wendangku.net/doc/c33074977.html,pare the current competitors’specifications to those of the potential AMSOIL replacement
product.AMSOIL products are listed under their “Application Code”as one of the following:
APPLICATION CODES:
A.Recommended replacement.Product is very similar in composition.
B.Superior product. The original lube is probably petroleum based, and is not as good as the synthetic
AMSOIL product.
C.May be suitable, self evaluate. In many cases the AMSOIL product is an excellent substitute, but may
be different in some way that is significant for some applications.
D.Not used.
E.No direct replacement.AMSOIL does not have a lubricant that can be used as a direct replacement.
F.Consult AMSOIL for recommendations.AMSOIL T echnical Service may be able, based on operating
conditions and other factors, to recommend a suitable AMSOIL lubricant. However, they will need to
know all of these conditions to make a recommendation.
G.Grease composition may not be compatible.Thickeners used in various greases may not be compatible
with those used in others. If this occurs, the grease may lose its consistency and more frequent
re-lubrication will be required until all of the old grease is purged or cleaned out of the system.Due to
this possibility, unless the thickeners match up, we have listed greases which use different thickeners
than AMSOIL as “No direct replacement”in this guide.
4.If there is any doubt as to the suitablility of an AMSOIL product, contact AMSOIL T echnical Services for
assistance.
