The problem with much mobile technology is that it’s not really designed to be used while you’re actually mobile. The human brain can only pay attention to about three things at a time – and concentrate effectively on just one of them. Even though the consequences of smartphone distraction(注意力分散)are sometimes (25) _____ (amuse), they can also be serious.

The number of children (26) _____ (admit) to hospitals after accidents in public playgrounds (27) _____ (climb) by about a third in five years, according to NHS data. Experts in both Britain and the US, (28) _____ a similar rise has occurred suggest some of the increase may be a result of parents being too distracted by their phones (29) _____ (take) care of their children properly.

And now comes evidence showing that 11-year-old children are three times more likely to be hurt or seriously injured on the way to and from school than 10-year-olds, since 11 is the average age at which children receive their first mobile phone, six times more likely (30) _____ (send) a text when it happens. (31) _____ quarter of children surveyed admitted that they had been distracted by personal technology while crossing the road. ―There is,‖ the report concluded, ―a clear connection (32) _____ the use of technolog y and the time of serious accidents with children.‖

(B)

Self care is necessary for our physical and mental health, yet often it’s the first thing we drop when we find ourselves (33) _____ (stretch) for time. While we’re on the subject of time, let’s talk about priorities. When we feel like we don’t have time to do something important, it is (34) _____ because we’re not making time or because our priorities are not what we actually need. Everything we do with our time is a choice. It (35) _____ feel like we ―have to‖ do certain things, but, in reality, we have complete control over (36) _____ we spend our time. (37) _______ busy you are, you can fit self care into your schedule. Whether this means making it the first thing you do each morning, giving up TV or Facebook time, saying ―no‖ to certain commitments, or potentially displeasing (38) _____, you can fit self care into your weekly routine (39) _____ you prioritize(优先考虑). Self care doesn’t have to involve a lot of money, nor does it require a lot of time. If you (40)_____ (struggle) to fit self care into your routine, start small, prioritize, and listen to your heart.

apart) were tested for a wide range of personality traits(特征). In terms of happiness-41 as the ability to enjoy life-twins who are separated soon after birth were much less alike than twins __42___together. But when it comes to unhappiness, the twins raised apart-some without contact for as long as 64 years-were as 43 as those who had grown up together.

Why is unhappiness less influenced by 44 ? When we are happy, we are more responsive to people and keep up 45 better than when we are feeling sad. This doesn’t mean, however, that some people are bo rn to be sad and that’s that. Unhappiness may be related to genes, but this inherited trait can be influenced by 46 choice. You can increase your happiness through your own actions.

In a whole 47 of experiments by psychologists John Reich and Alex Zautra at Arizona State University, they asked students to select their favourite activities from a list of everyday pleasures-things like going to a movie, talking with friends and playing cards.

Then the researchers 48 some of the students in the experiment to increase the number of favourite activities the participated in for one month (the participants in the study 49 as controls (对照组) and did not vary their activity level). Result: Those who did more of the things they enjoyed were happier than those who didn’t. The conclusion, then, is that the pleasure we get from life is 50

ours to control.

Section C

All over the world, people admire the beauty and grace of butterflies. Butterflies come in every color imaginable, and their 50 display an incredible variety of patterns. The largest butterfly, Queen Alexandra’s Birdwing, has a wingspan (翼展) of up to 280 millimeters and lives in Papua New Guinea. The smallest, the Western Pygmy Blue in the southern U.S., has a wingspan of only 12 millimeters. Sadly, some of these beautiful creatures are now 51 .

Estimates indicate that between 15 and 20 thousand species of butterflies exist around the world. A number of these species are endangered, over 20 in Japan 52 . Although that number may seem small, losing even one species would be 53 . Nowadays scientists even look to butterflies as a 54 of the environment’s health, since they are 55 to environmental changes. Many environmentalists around the world are eager to protect the endangered butterflies from extinction. The American Museum of Natural History in New York, for example, has an unusual butterfly exhibit. This exhibit 56 the important role that butterflies play in our environment.

In recent years, environmental groups have made significant progress in 57 endangered butterfly populations. Governments throughout Asia have passed laws to help protect endangered wildlife, including butterflies. An area called Butterfly Valley in Assam, India, has become the focus of conscious 58 to protect the butterflies’ habitat(栖息地). Other projects in Serbia, Japan, and Canada are also hoping to 59 . Some of these efforts are already starting to work. The population of the El Segundo Blue Butterfly in California, for instance, has increased by 8 percent since 2010.

Finding a cure for the butterfly crisis is, 60 , not just for environmental groups. 61 citizens can plant butterfly gardens to support and enjoy these gentle creatures. A group of female prisoners in Belfair, Washington, are helping to rescue an endangered sp ecies called Taylor’s Checkerspot. They recognize how 62 seemingly insignificant creatures can be. The world cannot afford to lose any butterflies. As environmentalist John Muir once 63 , ―When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it 64 to everything else in the Universe.‖

Section B

finds that accidents involving walkers 41 the devices have increased three times in recent years.

Researchers combed several sources to find incidents in the U.S. of crashes 42 walkers and vehicles from 2004 to 2011. Searching the National Injury Surveillance System, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Google News archives and Westlaw Campus Research, they found 116 cases of death or injury involving walkers wearing headphones. Cases in which people were using mobile phones (including hands-free devices) were not included.

Over the years the number of cases increased, from 16 in 2004 and 2005 to 47 in 2010 and 2011. The victims’average age was 21, and most (68 percent) were male. The 43 ( 67percent ) were under the age of 30. Most (55 percent) were hit by trains, and 70 percent of the crashes, most of which were in urban areas, were 44 . In 74 percent of the cases, police or eyewitness reports said the walker had headphones on when hit. And 29 percent of reports made mention of horns or warning bells going off before the crash. The study authors pointed to two likely causes that may be a factor in what they call ―the possible 45 between headphone use and walker injury‖: sensory deprivation(感官剥夺)and 46 . The latter is more 47 called ―inattentional blindness,‖referring to the use of

electronic devices and how they decrease attention to things going on around us.

Hearing what’s going on in the environment, they point out, could be more important than 48 clues for walkers. But the authors add that this study doesn’t show cause or relationship of headphone use and walker risk, and other factors could have been involved in the accidents, such as walkers being intoxicated(陶醉)or drivers being at fault.More comprehensive information on such accidents is 49 , the researchers said, to see which groups of people may be most at risk.

Section C

We all remember seeing hitchhikers, standing by the side of the road, thumb sticking out, waiting for a lift. But it is getting 50 nowadays. What killed hitchhiking? 51 is often mentioned as a reason. Movies about murderous hitchhikers and real-life crime have put many drivers off 52 hitchhikers. That no single women picked me up on my journey to Manchester no doubt 53 the safety fear: a large, strangely dressed man is seen as dangerous.

But the reason may be more 54 : hitchhiking happens where people don’t have cars and transport services are poor. Plenty of people still hitchhike in Poland and Romania. Perhaps the rising level of 55 in the UK means the few people left hitchhiking are usually considered strange. Why can’t they afford cars? Three-quarters of the UK population have access to a car; many of the remainder will be quite old. The 56 hitchhiking population is therefore small. Yet my trip proves it’s still 57 to hitchhike. The people who picked me up were very interesting — lawyer, retired surgeon, tank commander, carpenter, man who live in an isolated farmhouse and a couple living up in the mountains. My 58 is that only really interesting people are mad enough to pick up fat blokes (家伙) in red, spotted scarves. Most just wanted to do someone a good turn; a few said they were so surprised to see a hitchhiker that they couldn’t help 59 . The 60 of hitchhiking most likely lies with car-sharing organized over the Internet, via sites such as hitchhikers. org. But for now, you can still stick your thumb out (actually, I didn’t do much of that, 61 just to hold up my destination sign) and people —wonderful, caring, sharing, unafraid people —will stop. In the UK, with its cheap coaches and reasonable rail service, I don’t think I’ll make a 62 of it. But having 63 it so much, I’m ready now to do a big trip across Europe and beyond. In the 1970s a female friend of my wife’s hitchhiked to India. How wonderful it would be to have another go, though Afghanistan might be a(n) 64 . I wish I’d got that tank commander’s mobile number.

One【宝山】 (A) “Runners, to your mark, Get set…” Bang! And I was off, along with a bunch of other teenage cross-country runners from high schools across the county. The day was like any other fair-weather autumn day in Maryland. But the race that day felt unique from the get-go. For one thing, I liked the course. It was my team’s home course, one I was used to running durin g practices. It took runners along an area of land that included open fields, hills and even winding dirt paths through a small forest. It was a beautiful 5-kilometer course. This particular race was our team’s invite, and I was proud to be sharing the cou rse with competitors from other schools. It also meant a lot―more than normal that my parents were there to cheer me on. With so much to expect that day, I was ready to run! And I didn’t want to be stuck with the pack of other runners, as is typical at the beginning of most cross-country races. So when the gun sounded, I took off running, leaving everyone else in the dust. The first part of our course followed the outside edge of a large open field before disappearing into the forest. Within seconds of the start, I was far ahead of everyone, and all of the fans could see it. It felt magnificent. But that feeling didn’t last long. Little did I know my coach was laughing to himself, thinking, “Gabe is done for!” And I was. My body was telling me to slow down. My pride, however, said “No! Not until you’re out of sight of the spectators!” I was in agony, but I kept up my pace until I reached the forest. Once in among the trees. I slowed way down. I enjoyed most races, even while pushing myself, but this one was not enjoyable in the least. I finished the race, but in nowhere near the time I could have if I’d paced myself well from the beginning. Every time I reflect on that cross-country season, I’m reminded of something: Pride is no substitute for pace. 56.What is special to the author about the race? A. The weather condition was good for runners. B. He was familiar with the home course.

上海2014高三英语一模汇编·阅读C篇

试题汇编·2014高三英语一模·阅读C篇 试题分类 宝山 Happiness can be described as a positive mood and a pleasant state of mind.According to recent polls(民意调查), sixty to seventy percent of Americans consider themselves to be moderately happy and one in twenty persons feels very unhappy.Psychologists have been studying the factors that contribute to happiness. It is not predictable, nor is a person in an apparently ideal situation necessarily happy. The ideal situation may have little to do with his actual feelings. A good education and income are usually considered necessary for happiness.Though both may contribute, they are only chief factors if the person is seriously undereducated or actually suffering from lack of physical needs. The rich are not likely to be happier than the middle-income group or even those with very low incomes.People with college educations are somewhat happier than those who did not graduate from high school, and it is believed that this is mainly because they have more opportunities to control their lives.Yet people with a high income and a college education may be less happy than those with the same income and no college education. Poor health does not rule out happiness except for the severely disabled or those in pain.Learning to cope with a health problem can contribute to happiness. Those who have good relationship with other family members are happier than those who live alone.Love has a higher correlation with happiness than any other factors. It should be noted that people quickly get used to what they have, and they are happiest when they feel they are increasing their level no matter where it stands at a given time. Children whose parents were happily married have happier childhoods, but are not necessarily happier adults. The best formula(准则)for happiness is to be able to develop AQ(Adversity Quotient that can be of great benefit when running into trouble),to have a personal involvement and commitment, and to develop self-confidence and self-esteem. 74.It can be inferred from the passage that_____. A.What Does Happiness Consist in B.Happiness and Unhappiness C.Different Kinds of Happiness D.Causes of Happiness and Unhappiness 长宁 The term culture now is more used to describe everything from the fine arts to the outlook of a business group or a sports team.In its original sense, however, culture includes all identifying aspects of a racial group, nation,or empire:its physical environment, history, and traditions, its social rules and economic structure, and its religious beliefs and arts. The central beliefs and customs of a group are handed down from one generation to another. It is for this reason that most people regard culture as learned rather than innate.People acquire a culture because they are not born with one.The process by which a person develops a taste for regional foods, accented speech,or an outlook on the world over time, therefore,is known as enculturation(文化适应). Cultures are often identified by their symbols—images that are familiar and coated with meaning.Totem poles(图腾柱)carved with animals and creative figures suggest aspects of the Native American peoples of the Pacific Northwest but more literally represent specific tribes(部落).In Asia and India, the color of yellow is connected with temples while in ancient China it was a color only the emperor’s family was allowed to wear. Thus, different cultures may respond to a symbol quite differently. For example,to some a flag may represent pride, historical accomplishments,or ideals;to others, however,it can mean danger or oppression. To individuals unfamiliar with cultures outside their own,the beliefs, behaviors, and artistic expression of other groups can seem strange and even threatening.A society that ranks all other cultures against its own standards is considered to be ethnocentric(from the Greek ethnos, meaning“people,”and kentros, meaning“center”).A strongly ethnocentric society assumes also that what is different from its own culture is likely to be inferior and, possibly, wrong or evil. All people are ethnocentric to some degree, and some aspects of ethnocentrism, such as national pride, contribute to a well-functioning society. An appreciation for one’s own culture, however, does not prevent acceptance and respect for another culture.History documents the long-term vigour and success of multicultural groups in which people from numerous and various cultural backgrounds live and work together.Extreme ethnocentrism,in contrast, can lead to racism —the belief that it is race and racial origin that account for variations in human character or ability and that one’s own race is superior to all others. 74.What does the word“innate”in Paragraph2most probably mean?
