如今有些消费者，过度消耗资源只是为了满足自己的存在需求，满足虚荣。他们动辄以在自然保护区修建别墅为荣，以身穿动物皮毛为荣，以吞咽国家保护动物为荣。过度消费珍惜资源，那叫显摆，炫富，西晋时候权臣王恺与富豪石崇斗富，各种无厘头炫富，结局如何呢？豪门追求这种所谓的“存在需求”，失了民心，丢了中原，只好衣冠南渡，偏安一隅去了。这种存在需求实际是畸形的，过度的虚荣心损害的是子子孙孙的生存资源，是以透支生存资源为成本来为自己找感觉。“居安思危，戒奢以俭”，以过度消费来显示存在感，去满足不够理性的，所谓的“存在需求”，轻则是道德缺位的一种表现，严重的就是罪行。
