Every country in the world has a flag. A flag is a piece of cloth with a picture or pattern on it. The flag is a symbol that stands for the country. The fifty stars are a symbol of the fifty states in the country, and the thirteen stripes are a symbol of the country’s first thirteen colonies (殖民地).

However, a flag may be a symbol of a group, a school, or an event like the Olympics. The flag of the Olympics shows five rings of different colors that connect. Each ring is a symbol for a part of the world that joins in the Olympics. The Red Cross is group that helps people who are in trouble. If a person sees the Red Cross flag, which has a red cross against a white background, he knows he can ask for help. People may fly a flag as a custom on a holiday. Children’s Day in Japan is a holiday when the country wishes for children’s ha ppiness. It is a custom on this day to fly a flag with a picture of a fish.

Flags are also used as a way to talk. A flag with patterns can be very helpful to people who do not speak the same language. Sailors on ships use flags to talk to sailors on other ships. They may not speak the same language, but they know what the patterns mean. A flag with blue and white squares says “no.” A flag with five stripes that

are blue, white, and red says “yes.”

It is a great but difficult project to set up a permanent human settlement on Mars. Over 200,000 volunteers from more than 120 countries have applied to take a one-way trip to Mars.

⑥中国自唐代韩愈以来，便主张“读书必先识字”。中国文字表面上古今不异，但两三千年演变下来，同一名词已有各时代的不同涵义，所以没有训诂的基础知识，是看不懂古书的。西方书也是一样。不精通德文、法文而从第二手的英文著作中得来的有关欧洲大陆的思想观念，是完全不可靠的。 ⑦中国知识界似乎还没有完全摆脱殖民地的心态，一切以西方的观念为最后依据。甚至“反西方”的思想也还是来自西方，如“依赖理论”、如“批判学说”、如“解构”之类。所以特别是这十几年来，只要西方思想界稍有风吹草动（主要还是从美国转贩的），便有一批中国知识分子兴风作浪一番，而且立即用之于中国书的解读上面，这不是中西会通，而是随着外国调子起舞，像被人牵着线的傀儡一样，青年朋友们如果不幸而入此魔道，则从此便断送了自己的学问前途。 ⑧美国是一个市场取向的社会，不变点新花样、新产品，便没有销路。学术界受此影响，因此也往往在旧东西上动点手脚，当作新创造品来推销，尤以人文社会科学为然。不过大体而言，美国学术界还能维持一种实学的传统，不为新推销术所动。今年5月底，我到哈佛大学参加了一次审查中国现代史长期聘任的专案会议。其中有一位候选者首先被历史系除名，不加考虑。因为据听过演讲的教授报告，这位候选者在一小时之内用了一百二十次以上“discourse”这个流行名词。哈佛历史系的人断定这位学人太过浅薄，是不能指导研究生作切实的文献研究的。我听了这番话，感触很深，觉得西方史学界毕竟还有严格的水准，他们还是要求研究生平平实实地去读书的。 ⑨这其实也是中国自古相传的读书传统，一直到30年代都保持未变。据我所知，日本汉学界大致也还维持着这一朴实的作风。我在美国三十多年中，曾看见了无数次所谓“新思潮”的兴起和衰灭，真是“眼看他起高楼，眼看他楼塌了”。我希望中国知识界至少有少数“读书种子”，能维持着认真读中国书的传统，彻底克服殖民地的心理。至于大多数人将为时代风气席卷而去，大概已是无可奈何的事。
