I live in London and I’m looking forward to May 4. It’s our next bank holiday this year. We have a total of eight of these in England and Wales, such as New Year’s Day, Easter Monday, Boxing Day, Christmas Day and so on. I’m planning to grab a beach towel, some suntan lotion (防晒油) and go to the coastal town of Brighton for the day. Some of my colleagues are happy just to go for a picnic in one of the city’s many parks.

But at sunset after a day of leisure, no matter where we are, we will all be thinking the very same thing: W hy don’t we have more holidays?

These collective days off work cost businesses a lot of money. A report by the Center for Economics and Business Re-search in 2012 suggested that each bank holiday costs the U.K. economy £2.3 bn and canceling the lot of them would boost annual output by £19 bn.

But they admit that this figure might be far from accurate. Actually, it’s di fficult to calculate the loss of productivity because some of us compensate by working harder and later. And holidays impact differently in different sectors. A restaurant that caters for employees in the office complex next door will lose a day’s trade, b ut supermarkets will have record sales of snacks on warm, sunny bank holidays. The zoo, cinemas, bars, hotels... they all stand to gain when people idle(无事可做) away the hours.

I think holidays are good for the soul. It’s important to get away from the routine work and on some occasions a holiday can unite a nation. Ask a Brazilian about their carnival. It’s an occasion in which everyone in the country seems to let their hair down. In Britain, there is sometimes an extra holiday for a royal event, like Queen Elizabeth’s Jubilee.

There are street parties and a real sense of community on these special days. Thankfully, there are always some royal activities. Ma ybe we’ll get an extra public holiday for this!

24.Which of the following holidays is not a bank holiday in England?

A. Boxing Day.

B. May 4 this year.

C. Carnival.

D. Easter Monday.

25. Why does each bank holiday cost the U.K. economy?

A. Some go for a picnic in the city’s parks.

B.Some people work harder in order to enjoy holiday.

C. People are off work on collective days.

D. People want to have more holidays.

26. Which businesses benefit from bank holidays?

A. Banks and restaurants.

B. Businesses like the zoo, cinemas, bars and hotels.

C. Trade companies.

D. School and supermarkets.

27. What does “let their hair down” mean in the last paragraph?

A. Cancel.

B. Calculate.

C. Delight.

D. Relax.

C

Some objects just seem to go together. Cake and ice cream go together; so do a ball and a bat. A leaf is an object. So is a tree. But a leaf and a tree go together. A pencil and a piece of paper are objects. The two go together.

Many objects go together. You use objects that go together all day. First, you get up in the morning. You dress yourself. You put on your shoes and tie the laces. Shoes and shoe laces go together.

Soon you are on your way to school. Maybe you ride a bicycle to school. The bicycle is made of parts, among which are a chain and the wheels. The chain and a wheel go together.

When you get to school, you put your bicycle in the bicycle rack (车架). The bicycle and the rack go together. Now think about all the things in your classroom Many of the objects go together.

A piece of chalk goes with the blackboard. An eraser goes with a pencil. Maybe you will be mixing some water colors. The water goes with the paints. Some objects just seem to go together.

Liquids and cups go together. Milk and water are liquids. Hot chocolate is a liquid. You can drink these liquids from a cup. Just think about where you live. What objects there go together? After school, find more objects that go together.

28. Why do we say that a piece of chalk and the blackboard go together?

A.Because we can find them in the classroom.

B.Because we write on the blackboard with a piece of chalk.

C.Because a piece of chalk is part of the blackboard.

D.Because a piece of chalk and a blackboard are different objects.

29.Which of the following groups of objects go together according to this reading

passage?

A. A book and a leaf.

B. Coffee and a pencil.

C. A football and a glass.

D. A pen and ink.

30. It is very possible that this reading passage is taken from

A a news magazine B. a history book

C. a science textbook

D. a school newspaper

31. The best title for this reading passage should be .

A. Objects Together

B. Let Things Go Together

C. From Home to School

D. A Tree and Its Leaves

D

You are seated in class as your teacher explains and points things out on the whiteboard. You accidentally dropped your pencil on the floor. As you lean (屈身) over to pick up your pencil, your cell phone falls out of your coat pocket! Luckily you catch it without your teacher seeing, but it is in plain view of the video camer a’s shiny lens (镜头) that points straight at you. The classroom phone rings, and after a brief conversation, your teacher walks over to your desk and kneels down beside you. “A bout that cell phone of yours ...?”How did that get you in trouble? How could it possibly be a good idea to put cameras in classrooms?

When students are in their classrooms, teachers are in the classroom too, usually. But when a teacher goes out of the classroom, what usually happens is either everything goes on as usual, or the students get a little more talkative. It is the teacher's job to keep people quiet. If something horrible happened, somebody in class would usually report it, or it would just be obvious to the teacher when he came back that something had happened. If we already have cameras in the halls, why spend the money to get thirty more cameras for all the different classrooms? Our school district already has a low budget, so we would be spending money on something completely unnecessary.

Different students react differently when there is a camera in the room. Some students get nervous, trying hard to stay focused on their work with a camera focused on them. 90% of students say that they do better work when they are calmer, and cameras are not going to help. Other students look at cameras as a source of entertainment. These students will do things such as wave at the camera, make faces, or say hi to the people watching through the camera. This could be a big distraction (使人分心的事)for others who are trying to learn and participate in class.

Instead of solving problems, cameras would cause the problems. That is why I disagree with the idea of putting cameras in classrooms. This plan should not be put to action.

32.In the first paragraph, the author shows his point of view by________.

A. analyzing causes

B.describing a scene

C. discussing differences

D. following time order

33. According to the author, putting cameras in classrooms_________.

A. keeps everything in its usual state

B. costs more than putting cameras in school hall

C. is a waste of money and unnecessary

D. helps teachers watch over students behavior

34.How do video cameras in classrooms affect students?

A. They take students’attention away.

B. They force students to learn more.

C. They help students calm down.

D.They make classes more lively and interesting

35.It can be learnt from the text that__________.

A. things recorded by video cameras are not always reliable

B. cameras in the halls are a big distraction for students

C. video cameras in classrooms have caused many problems

D. there is a plan to install video cameras in classrooms
