Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B,C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage.

A

Some time ago, I discovered that one of my chairs had a broken leg. I didn’t think there would be any difficulty in getting it mended, as there are a whole lot of antique shops near my home. So I left home one morning carrying the chair with me. I went into the first shop expecting a friendly reception. I was quite wrong. The man wouldn't even look at my chair.

The second shop, though slightly more polite, was just the same, and the third and the fourth —so I decided that my approach must be wrong.

I went into the fifth shop with a plan in my mind. I placed the chair on the floor and said to the shopkeeper, “Would you like to buy a chair?” He looked it over carefully and said, “Yes, not a bad chair. How much do you want for it, sir?” “Twenty pounds,” I said. “OK,” he said, “I’ll give you twenty pounds.” “It’s got a slightly broken leg,” I said. “Yes, I saw that; it's nothing.”

Everything was going according to plan and I was getting excited. “What will you do with it?” I asked. “Oh, it will be easy to sell once the repair is done.” “I'll buy it,” I said. “What do you mean? You’ve just sold it to me,” he said. “Yes, I know but I’ve changed my mind. I'm sorry; I'll give you twenty-seven pounds for it. ” “You must be crazy,” he said. Then, suddenly the penny dropped. “I know what you want. You want me to repair your chair. ” “You’re right,” I said. “And what would you have done if I had walked in and said, ‘Would you mend this chair for me?’” “I wouldn't have agreed to do it,” he said. “We don’t do repairs, not enough money in it and too much trouble. But I’ll mend this for you; shall we say for a fiver?” He was a very nice man and was greatly amused by the whole thing.

56. We can learn from the text that in the first shop the writer ________.

A. was rather impolite

B. was warmly received

C. asked the shopkeeper to buy his chair

D. asked the shopkeeper to repair his chair

One of us would walk her, another would feed her, then there were baths, playing catch and many other games, Brownie, in return. loved each and every one of us. When Mary Moore began her high school in 1951, her mother told her, "Be sure and take a typing course so when this show business thing doesn't work out, you'll have something to rely on." Mary responded in typical teenage fashion. From that moment on, "the very last thing I ever thought about doing was taking a typing course," she recalls.

The show business thing worked out, of course. In her career, Mary won many awards. Only recently, when she began to write Growing Up Again, did she regret ignoring her mom," I don't know how to use a computer," she admits.

Unlike her 1995 autobiography, After All, her second book is less about life as an award-winning actress and more about living with diabetes (糖尿病). All the money from the book is intended for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), an organization she serves as international chairman. "I felt there was a need for a book like this," she says. "I didn't want to lecture, but I wanted other diabetics to know that things get better when we're self-controlled and do our part in managing the disease."

But she hasn't always practiced what she teaches. In her book, she describes that awful day, almost 40 years ago, when she received two pieces of life-changing news. First, she had lost the baby she was carrying, and second, tests showed that she had diabetes. In a childlike act, she left the hospital and treated herself to a box of doughnuts (甜甜圈). Years would pass before she realized she had to grow up--again---and take control of her diabetes, not let it control her. Only then did she kick her three-pack-a-day cigarette habit, overcome her addiction to alcohol, and begin to follow a balanced diet.

Although her disease has affected her eyesight and forced her to the sidelines of the dance floor, she refuses to fall into self-pity. "Everybody on earth can ask, 'why me?' about something or other," she insists. "It doesn't do any good. No one is immune (免疫的) to heartache, pain, and disappointments. Sometimes we can make things better by helping others. I've come to realize the importance of that as I've grown up this second time. I want to speak out and be as helpful as I can be."

66. Why did Mary feel regretful?

A. She didn't achieve her ambition.

B. She didn't take care of her mother.

C. She didn't complete her high school.

D. She didn't follow her mother's advice.

67.We can know that before 1995 Mary .

A. had two books published

B. received many career awards

C. knew how to use a computer

D. supported the JDRF by writing

68. Mary's second book Growing Up Again is mainly about her ______.

A. living with diabetes

B. successful show business

D. remembrance of her mother

69. When Mary received the life-changing news, she ______.

A. lost control of herself

B. began a balanced diet

C. tried to get a treatment

D. behaved in an adult way

70. What can we know from the last paragraph?

A. Mary feels pity for herself.

B. Mary has recovered from her disease.

C. Mary wants to help others as much as possible.

D. Mary determines to go back to the dance floor.

Part IV Writing (45 marks)

Section A (10 marks)

Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage.

Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.

Everyone should visit a lighthouse at least once.

The most important reason for such visit is to realize how our ancestors(祖先) battled(与…….斗争) nature with the basic tools they had. They had only basic ways of creating light, and yet they found a way of using this simple technology(技术) to save ships from hitting rocks.

Secondly, visiting lighthouse will help us to understand the lives of lighthouse keepers. By their very nature, lighthouses were built on some rocks or cliffs(悬崖). To walk around their small home and imaging the angry storm outside beating against the walls is to take a step towards understanding their lives.

It’s true that lighthouse were built in out-of-the-way(偏僻的,不合常规的) places. But on a pleasant sunny summer day, this very isolation(隔离,孤立) has a natural beauty that many people will love to experience. Therefore, the visitor is likely to think it is a world preferable to the busy and noisy modern life.

Another reason for considering a visit is that the lighthouses themselves can be very attractive buildings. Mankind could often not be content just to put up a basic structure, but felt the need to build with an artistic touch.

Finally, lighthouses have a romantic attraction, summed up by the image of the oil-skin coated(上涂料的) keeper climbing his winding stairs(旋梯) to take care of the light to warn ships and save lives.

In a word, one can learn much from visiting the lighthouses.

Directions. Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage and the required words limit. Write your answers on your answer sheet.

With only about 1,000 pandas left in the world, China is desperately trying to clone the animal and save the endangered species. That’s a move similar to what a Texas A & M University researchers have been undertaking for the past five years in a project called “Noah’s Ark.”

Noah’s Ark is aimed at collecting eggs, embryos(胚胎), semen(精子) and DNA of endangered animals

and storing them in liquid nitrogen(氮). If certain species should become extinct, Dr. Duane Kraemer, a professor in Texas A & M’s College of Veterinary Medicine, says there would be enough of the basic building blocks to reintroduce the species in the future.

It is estimated that as many as 2,000 species of mammals, birds and reptiles(爬行动物) will become extinct in over 100 years. The panda, native only to China, is in danger of becoming extinct in the next 25 years.

This week, Chinese scientists said they grew an embryo by introducing cells from a dead female panda into the egg cells of a Japanese white rabbit. They are now trying to implant the embryo into a host animal.

“The nuclear transfer (核子移植) of one species to another is not easy, and the lack of available panda eggs could be a major problem,”Kraemer believes. “They will probably have to do several hundred transfers to result in one pregnancy. It takes a long time and it’s difficult, but this could be groundbreaking science if it works. They are certainly not putting any live pandas at risk, so it is worth the effort,” adds Kraemer, who is one of the leaders of the Project at Texas A & M, the first-ever attempt at cloning a dog.

“They are trying to do something that’s pioneering, and this is very similar to our work in Noah’s Ark. We’re both trying to save animals that face extinction. I certainly appreciate their effort and there’s a lot we can learn from what they are attempting to do. It’s a research that is very much needed.”
