第三部分阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

Being a single mother, doing a few jobs and trying to finish my schooling leaves me very little time for a social life. So when I had a date with a guy I had met, I was very excited! I kissed my daughter goodbye and set out in my car. After a while, the thought to get gas crossed my mind, but I ignored it, as I wanted to be on time. I was driving down the freeway when I realized there was no way I would make it and I should pull off at the next exit to get gas. But the next exit was miles away.

When the car stopped in the lane at last, I became horrified! I was all dressed up in a skirt and high heels, and the traffic was terribly blocked! I looked in my rear-view mirror and saw a big SUV behind me.

The doors opened and 4 teenage girls who were about 16 years old came out. They came up to my window and asked if they could help. I gratefully accepted their help. I put the car in neutral (空挡) and they pushed it all the way to the gas station! It was not an easy task! I offered to pay them, but they just smiled and went into their car and headed on their way.

I got my gas and went back on my way. I was quite late, but the story helped me have a great conversation with my date. Having been given an act of kindness, I was in a wonderful mood.

Puppy Love is not your typical pet store! There are several reasons why Puppy Love is a unique place. Firstly, it is not part of a chain. Puppy Love is a privately owned store with the owners always in. Secondly, we only sell puppies! By focusing only on puppies rather than fish, birds or other animals, we are puppy experts! We have a huge selection of puppies. Our adult staff will guide you toward the right puppies for your lifestyle and family. Our employees are not paid on commission (佣金), so their goal is a perfect match for every customer and every puppy. Our customers benefit because we focus on one thing and we do it very well. Our puppies and our service are excellent.

Another unique feature of our store is that our puppies are in large open cages in a very large room where they are easy to be s een. We also have “puppy playrooms” where puppies can be held and played with. Our puppies are better socialized with other dogs and with people than puppies that are kept isolated in small cages behind a glass wall.

Reference books (参考书) are always available in the store for handy information on the background and temper of the puppy you are considering. We also have many kinds of food, toys, teething bones, lovely dog beds, training tools, and other useful things. Come on in and find your new best friend!

As a patriotic (爱国的) student in Ang Lee’s Golden Lion-winning Lust?熏Caution?穴SeJie?雪, Leehom Wang plots to kill a traitor to save his country. And in his latest album ChangeMe?穴GaibianZiji?雪, the R&B idol faces up to the threat of climate change.

“In the past, I cared about whether I could lead a music trend,” said the 31-year-old Wang. “But now I just want to do something meaningful for my listeners.”

In ChangeMe, he calls on everyone to help to protect the earth by making small changes in their behavior. And that’s what he’s doing in his daily life too.

“I ride a bicycle to press conferences and I refuse to buy over-packaged products,” he said. The cover of his new album is made from recycled paper. Inside, he gives advice on protecting the environment, for example, by using energy-saving light bulbs. To get more people involved, Wang is organizing an online charity auction (拍卖) to sell off outfits from his concerts. He will use the money to plant trees.

Some critics believe the album won’t sell well because of the serious message behind it, but Wang said that he regarded the album as a “venture”. He also thought hard about it before making it.

“This topic doesn’t belong to mainstream pop music,” he said. “My company was unwilling to let me change my direction, but I insisted.”

However, this “green”album still has some elements that will help to sell well. The song LongLivetheChinese(HuarenWansui) was written in honor of the Olympic champions like Liu Xiang and Guo Jingjing, who made an ad with Leehom Wang. He wrote another song FallingLeaves(LuoyeGuigen) under the pen name Kuang Y uming, the name of his character in Lust, Caution.

Lake Superior, the world’s largest freshwater lake, has been shrinking for years —and now it appears to be getting hotter.

Residents near the lake, which is bounded by Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, and Ontario in Canada, must walk 300 feet farther to reach the shorelines now. Some wharfs are unusable because of low water, and some lake edges now grow lots of tall wetland plants. The remaining lake water is also heating up at dramatic rates.

Researchers are starting to think that the shrinking and heating are related and both are caused by rising global temperatures and an on-going local drought (旱灾).

From the late 1960s to 1999, there was a 30-year period with water levels above average, said Scott Thieme, chief of the Great Lakes Hydraulics and Hydrology Office for the US Army Corps of Engineers in Detroit, Michigan. But in 1999, the water levels started to fall below average and have mostly stayed that way.

“Lake Superior is in its largest stretch of below average water levels since w e recorded water levels,” Thieme said. Scientists predict that by this fall, the lake will set a new record low — about an inch below the old one. Falling lake levels have seemed dramatic to lake residents because they’ve spent most of their lives alongsid e Lake Superior, he added. Some locals suspect water is being secretly moved from the lake to places such as the thirsty West. And as the climate over the Great Lakes region warms, Lake Superior is heating up at nearly twice of the climatic pace.

69. According to the researchers, Lake Superior is becoming lower and hotter because _______.

A. the water in the lake has been used too much

B. there are too many wetland plants in the lake

C. global temperatures keep on increasing

D. too many forests have been destroyed in the area

70. Why do the residents near the lake have to cover a longer distance to reach the shorelines?

A. Because they have moved farther away from the lake.

B. Because they want to take a longer walk.

C. Because living near the lake is dangerous now.

D. Because the water in the lake is less than before.

71. Which of the following statements about the water levels of Lake Superior is TRUE?

A. Between 1970 and 1999 the water levels were above average.

B. Before 1999 the water levels began to increase.

C. In 1999 the water levels began to fall.

D. The water levels will increase again this year.

72. From the passage, we know that ______.

A. some people have secretly moved water from Lake Superior to the West

B. nobody records the temperature and water levels of Lake Superior at all

C. this year water levels of Lake Superior might be the lowest in history

D. there used to be much less water in Lake Superior

Having friends, and finding new friendships is an important developmental task for preteens and

teens. While they have learned to play well with others during their childhood, developing independent friendships is a different thing. Preteens and teens will be allowed to use their own resources to decide whether to be someone’s friend or not, in stead of being taught by their parents. Parents must give their teenagers some freedom in choosing who they want to hang out with.

You can help your teens to choose their friends, although it’s your teenagers who make the ultimate decision. You can use teachable moments to talk about what makes a good friend. Here are some points to remember when you talk about friendships with your teenagers:

1. You are allowed to have many friends;

2. Honesty is important in a friendship;

3. Friends sometimes hurt each other, but they can apologize and forgive;

4. Friends can influence each other, not only in a positive way but also in a negative way;

5. Who you choose to be your friend is important, so choose wisely;

6. It takes many learned skills to make and keep a friendship, and it also takes many skills to end a friendship;

7. It is okay and even beneficial to make friends with the opposite gender;

8. It takes time to make a good friend, but it is worth the effort;

9. Spending time together will help you get to know your friends well and you will feel comfortable sharing feelings;

10. A good friendship will make you feel good about yourself.

73. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the first paragraph?

A. Whether a teen has friends or not is unimportant.

B. Teens should only play with the friends chosen by their parents.

C. Teens should have no freedom in choosing friends.

D. It’s important to learn to develop new friendships during teens.

B. preteens

D. teachers

75. According to the 10 points, all the following statements are wrong EXCEPT that _____.

Text10

To make our city cleaner and more beautiful, our class, sixty of us in all, did the volunteer work yesterday. It was a fine Sunday morning. We gathered at the school gate at 7:30. Then we went to a street park on foot. It took us about 20 minutes to get there. We then divided ourselves into four 10-person groups. Each group had its own work to do. The work of Group 1 was to pick up the rubbish; the work of Group 2 was to pull up the weeds; the work of Group 3 was to clean the park benches and that of Group 4 was to sweep the paths. We had worked for about two hours when it began to rain. Since none of us had brought umbrellas or raincoats with us, we had to stop working and wait for the rain to stop. Fortunately, the rain lasted only twenty minutes. We finished our work at about half past ten. We felt happy for what we had done.

Nowadays, as the pollution in cities is getting more and more serious, more and more people prefer to spend their holidays in the countryside. Here are some of my reasons:

First, there are a lot of natural scenic spots and the air in the countryside is fresh. Second, you can take a walk in the mountains with birds singing around you. How beautiful it is! Third, you can go fishing and swimming in rivers or pools, which is really interesting. Fourth, the countryside is not as noisy as cities. You can relax yourself and have a good mood every day. Besides, the accommodations are quite affordable there.

34.D。after all 毕竟、终究;in all 总计;first of all 第一,首先;above all 最重要的。根据语境可知D符合句意,侧重于强调。40.A。因为要活埋了驴子,老农为驴子感到惋惜。feel sorry for 为……感到遗憾, 为……感到惋惜。45.A。根据后文的内容,可知最初驴子知道主人要活埋自己而自己没有想出逃离困境的办法时,它是非常恐慌的。55.A。原本是要活埋驴子的东西,而事实结果却是救了驴子。59.A。从After a while, the thought to get gas crossed my mind, but I ignored it, as I wanted to be on time. 可知划线部分中的make it是指不能按时赴约这件事。67.B。根据常识以及王力宏自己说的But now I just want to do something meaningful for my listeners. 可以知道他的这种保护环境的行为是很有意义的。70.D。湖水减少,露出的地面就多,离湖岸线自然就远了,所以答案为D。74.C。根据Here are some points to remember when you talk about friendships with your teenagers ... 可确定该篇

(完整word版)人教版高一英语必修二英语课文原文(2)

Frederick William Ⅰ,the King of Prussia , could never have imagined that his greatest gift to the Russian people would have such an amazing history . This gift was the Amber Room , which was given this name because several tons of amber were used to make it . The amber which was selected had a beautiful yellow-brown colour like honey . The design of the room was in the fancy style popular in those days . It was also a treasure decorated with gold and jewels , which took the country's best artists about ten years to make . In fact , the room was not made to be a gift . It was designed for the palace of Frederick Ⅰ. However, the next King of Prussia , Frederick William Ⅰ,to whom the amber room belonged, decided not to keep it. In 1716 he gave it to Peter the Great. In return , the Czar sent him a troop of his best soldiers. So the Amber Room because part of the Czar's winter palace in St Petersburg.About four metres long, the room served as a small reception hall for important visitors . Later,Catherine Ⅱhad the Amber Room moved to a palace outside St Petersburg where she spent her summers. She told her artists to add more details to it .In 1770 the room was completed the way she wanted . Almost six hundred candles lit the room ,and its mirrors and pictures shone like gold. Sadly , although the Amber Room was considered one of the wonders of the world , it is now missing . In September 1941, the Nazi army was near St Petersburg . This was a time when the two countries were at war . Before the Nazis could get to the summer palace , the Russians were able to remove some furniture and small art objects from the Amber Room . However , some of the Nazis secretly stole the room itself . In less than two days 100,000 pieces were put inside twenty-seven woooden boxs . There is no doubt that the boxs were then put on a train for Konigsberg, which was at that time a German city on the Baltic Sea . After that, what happened to the Amber Room remains a mystery . Recently , the Russians and Germans have built a new Amber Room at the summer palace . By studying old photos of the former Amber Room , they have made the new one look like the old one .In 2003 it was ready for the people of St Petersburg when they celebrated the 300th birthday of their city . A FACT OR AN OPINION? What is a fact? Is it something that people believe? No. A fact is anything that can be proved. For example, it can be proved that China has more people than any other country in the world. This is a fact. Then what is an opinion? An opinion is what someone believes is true but has not been proved. So an opinion is not good evidence in a trial. For example, it is an opinion if you say “Cats are better pets than dogs”. It may be true, but it is difficult to prove. Some people may not agree with this opinion but they also cannot prove that they are right. In a trial, a judge must decide which eyewit nesses to believe and which not to believe. The judge does not consider what each eyewitness looks like or where that person lives or works. He/she only cares about whether the eyewitness has given true information, which must be facts rather than opinions. This kind of information is called evidence. Unit 2 AN INTERVIEW Pausanias, who was a Greek writer about 2,000 years ago, has come on a magical journey on March 18th 2007 to find out about the present-day Olympic Games. He is now interviewing Li Yan, a volunteer for the 2008 Olympic Games.
