Unit 1

Is there a contrast between learning styles in China and the West? While we should be careful to avoid exaggerating the differences, they do appear to exist. In China, for example, greater priority is given to developing skills at an early age. The Americans, on the other hand , place more emphasis on prompting creativity in young children, leaving them to pick up skills later. American parents tend to avoid rushing in to assist their children as they try to accomplish a task, thinking it better that children should learn to solve problems by themselves. Such an approach can, on occasion , be mistaken for neglecting one’s parental duties by those more used to “teaching by holding the hand,” Both approaches have their disadvantages as well as advantages, and it may well be worthwhile to search for a superior method that would combine the best of both worlds.

Unit 2

If you visited Karl Green, you might not at first sight think he was well-off . Most of what he owns is rather dated and he will readily admit to falling into the bottom income bracket . Yet he would deny that he is poor, for he feels that his life is full of less tangible riches . Rather than devoting himself to the pursuit of money before all else, he cherishes the pleasures of friendship. His lack of interest in possessions does, however, sometimes make him feel out of place in today’s materialistic society and he still clearly feels hurt when he remembers the abrupt departure of a girlfriend who did not share his views. Yet there are many who admire him, particularly for his focus on helping the poor through collecting donations each Christmas.

Unit 3

Our dad is typical of the older generation. You can certainly say he gives our welfare his constant attention. Sometimes, however, we wish he wouldn’t try quite so hard. To be frank, he seems to have a talent for embarrassing us by making dumb remarks. He should know better than that, but he never seems to learn and just goes on making the same old mistakes repeatedly . The result is that we live in constant dread of his well-intentioned interference in our affairs. Mom is no help, as you can bet she will always see things from his point of view rather than from ours. Overall, though, he’s a wonderful dad and I assure you I wouldn’t trade him for anyone in the w orld.

Unit 4

with the Internet we can escape into another world at the click of a button. For many this is a dream come true.Others, however, many find the virtual world a nightmare. It is especially annoying when the Internet connection is slow and everything crawls at a snail's pace. The computer does not take in your messages nor does it spit out data.Still others, who get sucked into the virtual world, may find communicating face-to-face too emotional and unbearable. At times they may feel this so strongly that they have to flee from real human contact, hurrying to get back on line to the comfort and safety of a less demanding world.

Unit 5

The following is how Michael Stone looks back on that day's competition.

In my mind's eye,In my mind's eye I can see every detail of that pole vault. The bar was set at a new height. As Iheard the crowd groan,I knew my competitor had failed to clear it.It was time for my mind with anxiety.I was tense and my palm began to sweat . I tried to shake off the tension , but was unsuccessful. At the critical moment, I remembered my mothe's advice to breathe deeply and brought myself under control . Then I was off , up and away, Soaring like an eahle , just as I did in my recurring dreams. The thump of my landing brought me back to earth. I had done it! This was no mere tantasy, but the real thing . All the sweat and hard work had paid off.Friends were rushing to congratulate me and I was surrounded by numerous clicking cameras of the media.

2018年大学英语第一学期期末考试(A卷) Part II Reading Comprehension (30 %) Directions: There are four passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. Passage One Science is not a set of unquestionable results but a way of understanding the world around us. Its real work is slow. The scientific method , as many of us learned in school, is a gradual process that begins with a purpose or problem or question to be answered. It includes a list of materials, a procedure to follow, a set of observations to make and, finally, conclusions to reach. In medicine, when a new drug is proposed that might cure or control a disease, it is first tested on a large random group of people, and their reactions are then compared with those of another random group not given the drug. All reactions in both groups are carefully recorded and compared, and the drug is evaluated. All of this takes time and patience. It’s the result of course, that makes the best news—not the years of quiet work that characterize the bulk of scientific inquiry. After an experiment is concluded or an observation is made, the result continues to be examined critically. When it is submitted for publication, it goes to a group of the scientist’s colleagues, who review the work. Einstein was right when he said: “No amount of experimentation can ever prove me right, a single experiment can at any time prove me wrong.” In August 1996, NASA announced the discovery in Antarctica of a meteorite(流星)from Mars that might contain evidence of ancient life on another world. As President Clinton said that day, the possibility that life existed on Mars billions of years ago was potentially one of the great discoveries of our time. After the excitement wore down and initial papers were published, other researchers began looking at samples from the same meteorite. Some concluded that the “evidence of life”was mostly contamination from Antarctic ice or that there was nothing organic at all in the rock. Was this a failure of science, as some news reports trumpeted? No! It was a good example of the scientific method working the way it is supposed to. Scientists spend years on research, announce their findings, and these findings are examined by other scientists. That’s how we learn. Like climbing a mountain, we struggle up three feet and fall back two. It’s a process filled with disappointments and reverses, but somehow we keep moving ahead.
