Passage One

Doctors have known for a long time that extremely loud noise can cause hearing

damage or loss. The noise can be the sound of a jet airplane or machines in factories or loud music or other common sounds found at home and at work. A person only needs to hear the noise for little more than one second to be affected.

An American scientist has found that using aspirin can increase the temporary hearing loss or damage from loud noise. He did an experiment, using a number of male students at a university who all had normal hearing. He gave them different amounts of aspirin for different periods of time, and then he tested their hearing ability. He found that students who were given four grams of aspirin a day suffered much greater temporary hearing loss than those who did not use aspirin. The hearing loss was about two times as great.

The scientist said millions of persons in the United States use much larger amounts of aspirin than were used in the study. He said these persons face a serious danger of suffering hearing loss from loud noise.

16. Doctors have long known that_______.

A. one will become deaf when he hears a loud noise

B. will be damaged even if he has heard a loud noise for only little more than one second

C. will not be damaged if he has heard a loud noise for only little more than one second

D. will not be damaged if he has little more than one second to get ready

18. According to this passage, one conclusion you can draw is that aspirin ______

A. should never be taken more than four grams daily

B. can damage one's hearing when it is given more than four grams daily

C. makes hearing damage from loud noise worse

D. increases hearing loss by two times

19. Millions of Americans are in danger of suffering hearing loss because they_____.

B. how much aspirin should be given in the treatment of the patients with hearing damage

from loud noise

C. whether the person who had hearing damage should use aspirin

D. whether aspirin would increase the temporary hearing damage from loud noise

Passage Two

The Chinese have used a method called acupuncture( 针灸) to perform operations for about 4,000 years without putting the patient to sleep. This involves placing flexible needles into certain parts of the body. The needles are available in a number of stores in China and anyone may buy them.

To learn how to use the needles takes about one month of training. But to be skillful requires greater time. The person who performs the acupuncture knows how to put in the needles so the needles themselves are not painful. This person also knows where to place the needles so the patient feels no pain in the area where the operation is to be performed. A particular operation might require 25 or more needles placed in various parts of the body. But now this operation requires only 3 or 4 needles.

Today, the Chinese doctors are trying to learn more about acupuncture. They are trying to develop convincing theory to explain how the needles work, in preventing pain, or why a needle in the wrist, for example would prevent the pain in the area of the mouth.

A patient who needs an operation is given a choice between having acupuncture or having one of the chemicals used for putting him to sleep. It has been estimated that over half of the patients choose acupuncture because there is no sickness after the operation but the chemical may make the patient sick for a few hours or a day.

21. Acupuncture is_________.

B. a medical needle

C. a medical technique

D. a medical machine

22. Which statement is NOT true of the performer of acupuncture?

A. He knows where to place the needles without pain.

D. He knows how to use the needles in an operation.

23. To learn how to use the needles, it takes a person________________.

A. several months

B. a couple of weeks

C. a little time

D. almost one month

24. It can be learned from the passage that______________.

A. the person performing the acupuncture knows a lot about the making of needles

B. an operation now needs fewer needles than in the past

C. acupuncture has existed in China for as long as 2,000 years

D. few patients prefer acupuncture to chemicals

25. Which is implied but not stated in the passage' s

A. The Chinese mainly use acupuncture to cure strange disease.

B. The Chinese are learning to be more skillful and efficient in acupuncture.

C. The Chinese have spread acupuncture all over the world.

D. Most Chinese patients prefer acupuncture to chemicals in curing diseases.

Passage Three

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) can be said to be the most innovative and successful foundation in history, and it has now a $27 billion endowment.

A few years ago, Bill Gates and his wife Melinda asked themselves how they could dramatically help the lives of the most people per dollar spent--and then set out to spend more dollars on the ideas they came up with than has ever before been devoted to any philanthropic (慈善的) effort. From the start, they agreed that their money was not to be distributed based on the recognition or applause they might receive, nor on the race, color or religion of the recipients. Rather, cash would be channeled so as to address the vital needs--indeed, in many cases, the very survival---of people around the world. Soon, they turned these thoughts into reality by focusing on global health and learning issues. In 1999 their foundation made one of tile largest charitable pledges ever:$750 million for child vaccines.

And Bill and Melinda have since invested far more than money. They have put their impressive intellects and energies behind their philanthropic works. Bill has become a walking dictionary of a medical knowledge. He reads many thousands of pages annually so that he can learn how to attack the world's most dangerous illnesses. I have heard him speak of many times on this subject and each time have been amazed by the breadth of his knowledge. Melinda, for her part, travels the world so that she can understand what a check from Seattle is actually accomplishing 10,000 miles away.

She insists that good intentions produce good results. Both Bill and Melinda bring an extraordinary blend of head and heart to the incredibly tough job of intelligently giving away billions of dollars. In particular, they are smart in a way that is rare in large philanthropic institutions. When a need is immediate, their response is immediate.

There are no two people I admire more for their contribution to mankind's welfare.

26. From the start, the BMGF____________.

A. refused to denote their money based on who might receive it

B. agreed to attack the world's most dangerous illnesses

C. intended to produce immediate results from their money

D. preferred to help ease the very survival of the needy people

27. Why does the author think the BMGF is the most innovative and successful

in history?

A. Because their money is ruled to be given to the really needy people.

B. Because they insist that good intentions should lead to good results.

C. Because their response is immediate if the need is immediate.

D. Because they have to know that every check from Seattle is actually

used.

28. The phrase “came up with” (Para. 2) is used to mean_________ .

A. intended

B. restated

C. proposed

D. claimed

29. Which of the following is NOT included in the charitable items of the

BMGF?

A. Global health issues.

B. Child vaccines.

C. Learning issues.

D. Blend of head and heart.

30. From the passage, we can infer that____________.

A. the author has a high opinion of the foundation

B. the author is surely a close friend of the Gates

C. the author believes Bill Gates is really a kind person

D. the author admires the medical knowledge of Bill Gates

Passage Four

Social customs and ways of behaving change. Things which were considered impolite many years ago are now acceptable. Just a few years ago, it was considered impolite behavior for a man to smoke on street. No man who thought of himself by smoking when a lady was in a room.

Customs also differ from country to country. Does a man walk on the left or the right of a woman in your country? Or doesn't it matter? Should you use both hands when you are eating? Should leave one in your lap, or on the table?

The Americans and the British not only speak the same language but also share a large number of social customs. For example, in both America and England people shake hands when they meet each other for the first time. Also, most Englishmen will open a door for a woman or offer their seat to a woman, and so will most Americans. Promptness is important both in England and in America. That is , if a dinner invitation is for 7 o'clock , the dinner guest either arrives close to that time or calls up to explain his delay.

The important thing to remember about social customs is not to do anything that might make other people feel uncomfortable-----especially if they are your guests. When the food was served, one of the guests started to eat his peas with a knife. The other guests were amused or shocked, but the host calmly picked up his knife and began eating in the same way. It would have been bad manners to make his guest feel foolish or uncomfortable.

31. If one has accepted a dinner invitation, what should he do if he is to be late for the

dinner?

A. He should find an excuse

B. He should ask for excuse.

C. He should say sorry

D. He should telephone to explain his being late.

32."It would have been bad manners to make his guests feel foolish or uncomfortable." "Bad manners” means ________.
