Administration

The administrative status of Shennongjia is rather unique, in that it is the only county-level administrative unit of the People's Republic of China that is designated a "forestry district" rather than a more usual county or county-level city. Shennongjia is a county-level unit directly administered by the provincial government as opposed to be part of a prefecture-level city or prefecture. The district was created in 1970 with Badong County, Xingshan County, and Fang County as the adjacent areas.

Geography

Shennongjia Forestry District is located in the northwest of Hubei province, which is bounded by Mountains series, covering a total area of about 3250 sq km. It is the single region in the name of …forest area?. The forest fraction of coverage is 69.5 percent. It borders on Xiangyang, Shiyan, Yichang, and Wanxian county of Chongqing city. The ridge extends from southwest to northeast.over 3,000 square kilometers. The resident population in this region is of 76,140 according to the sixth national census.

The special terrain here creates a wonderful climate here, Shennongjia is in the mid-latitude northern subtropical monsoon zone, the temperature slightly cool and rainy, average annual temperature is 12 ℃, and annual precipitation is 900-1000 mm. It has a pleasant climate with no intense heat in summer and no intense cold in winter making it a paradise for plants and animals at the meeting point of North and South China.

Nature

Natural Environment

Known as “The Oriental Botanic Garden” and the natural gene bank of biological species, Shennongjia shelters some of the world's rare or endangered plants and animals, such as Chinese

dove trees, South China tigers, white bears and white snakes.

Shennongjia is the “Sacred Green Land” in people's minds, where a primitive natural ecology is well preserved. In 1986 with the approval of the State Council, Shennongjia became “The National Nature Reserve of Forests and Wild Animal Species”. In 1990, Shennongjia is listed as a member of Man and Biosphere Program by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). In 1992, it was selected as the “Demonstration of Natural Reserve of Biodiversity” by the United Nations Development Program. In 1995, Shennongjia is also listed as "biodiversity conservation demonstration" by WWF.

Shennongjia is the only green area well preserved not only in the inland of China but also in the middle latitude zone of the world. Shennongjia, the last well preserved subtropical forest zone ecosystem in middle latitude zone in the world, is the most characteristic and monopolized traveling resource.

Natural Resources

There are rich mineral deposits in Shennongjia for its favorable conditions. The main minerals are phosphate, iron ore, copper ore, magnesium ore, lead and zinc, silicon ore etc. On the other hand, it is showed that the theoretical reserves of hydropower resources in Shennongjia is 57 million kilowatts, in which 124,500 kilowatts has been developed, 101,000 kilowatts are being developed.

T ourism

The tourist resources provide an array of attractions: the primitive forests, mountains and valleys, brooks and waterfalls, rare animals and plants, as well as the mysterious “savages”. It is said that more than 200 locals have witnessed the savage in person in the past 30-odd years. The above legeng adds mysterious atmosphere to the mountain.

A trip to Shennongjia can be done with various focuses: scientific research and study, adventures, sightseeing and holidays, as well as skiing and snow fun.

There are more than ten famous attractions in its forest area, such as Fengjingya, Hongping V alley, Shennong Top, Source of Fragrant Brook and Dajiu Lake,Tianmen Cliff, Swallow Cliff, Songluo River and many marvelous natural spectacles, such as Cold hole, Hot hole, and Tidewater hole and so on. The most attractive is the discovery of …uncivilized man?. It is said that there are more than two hundred persons who have seen the appearance of …uncivilized man? in the area, which makes Shennongjia more mysterious. Among which, Shennong Top, known as the first peak in central China, is 3105.4 meters above sea level, where traces of ancient floods can still be seen through the mountain top, the slope, the uneven surface, the exposed huge rocks, and many pebbles. Fengjingya is a dream-like place with many spectacular views: changing clouds and mist, exotic stone poles and stone peaks, and magnificent mountains reflected in the lucid water.

Economic Development

In 2010, the region's GDP was 1.23043 billion yuan, according to comparable prices growth

rate of 12.2%, of which: The added value of primary industry 140 million yuan, an increase of 4.8%, secondary industry realized added value of 488.14 million yuan , an increase of 7.9%, tertiary industry added value of 602.29 million yuan, an increase of 17.0%. 11.4:39.7:48.9 three industrial restructuring as per capita GDP was 15,354 yuan, an increase of 19.8%.

Transportation

The main north-south route throughout the district is China National Highway 209 (G209), which, however, is still "unimproved" in many places both within district (north of the national park entry at Y azikou) and in Badong County south of it. Hubei Provincial Route 307 (S307) runs through the northeastern part of the district, from G209 east to Songbai Town and on into the neighboring Baokang County (part of Xiangyang prefecture-level c ity). Due to the mountainous terrain, the district has no rail or water transport. However, construction of Shennongjia Airport started in April 2011 with an investment of 1 billion yuan.
