1 change → 指任何变化，完全改变，强调与原先的情况有明显的不同。
alter → 常指轻微的改变，强调基本上保持原物、原状的情况下所进行的部分改变。
vary → 暗示不规则或断断续续地变。
convert → 指进行全部或局部改变以适应新的功能或用途。指信仰或态度时，强调较激烈、大的改变。
modify → 强调起限定作用的变化或变更。指细小的变化，常含“缓和、降调”的意味。
transform → 指人或物在形状、外观、形式、性质等方面发生的彻底变化，失去原状成为全新的东西。
turn → 指外形、颜色、气味、性质等方面的变化，比change更通俗。

3 He may gently reprimand an official or even suggest to parliament that a law be altered.

他可以善意地批评某位官员，也可以甚至向议会提议修改某项法律。

Recognizing who the customer was, the manager was most apologetic and reprimanded the assistant severely.




4 The following case is a typical example of the Ombudsman's work.
下述事件是司法特派员工作的一个典型例子。



5 A foreigner living in s Swedish village wrote to the Ombudsman complaining that he had been ill-treated by the police, simply because he was a foreigner.

一个住在瑞典乡村的外国人写信给司法特派员，抱怨说他受到警察虐待，原因就是因为他是个外国人

deny a statement, a claim, an accusation, a charge, etc 否认一个说法﹑ 否定某人声称的事﹑ 否认一项指责﹑ 否认一项指控


6 It was impossible for the Ombudsman to take action, but when he received a similar complaint from another foreigner in the same village, he immediately sent one of his lawyers to investigate the matter.

司法特派员难以处理。但是，当他又收到住在同一村庄的另一个外国人写的一封内容类似的投诉信时，他立即派出一位律师前去调查。


7 The lawyer ascertained that a policeman had indeed dealt roughly with foreigners on several occasions.
ascertain：查明，弄清
律师证实有个警察确实多次粗鲁地对待外国人。

I hate dealing with large impersonal companies. 我讨厌与那些没有人情味的大公司打交道.





8 I've met him on several occasions. 我见过他几次.
occasional,uncommon,scare,rare
这些形容词均含“稀罕的，很少发生”之意。
occasional → 指偶然、不时或间或发生的事，侧重无规律可循。
uncommon → 指一般不发生或很少发生的事情，故显得独特、异常与例外。
scarce → 指暂时不易发现、不存在或数量不足，供不应求的东西。
rare → 指难得发生的事或难遇见的人或事，侧重特殊性。




9 The fact that the policeman was prejudiced against foreigners could not be recorded in the official files. It was only possible for the Ombudsman to find this out by sending one of his representatives to check the facts.

警察歧视外国人的事在官方档案中不可能加以记载，司法特派员只有派他的代表去核对事实才能了解真相。

prejudice：
His voice and manner prejudice his audience against him. 他的声音和举止使听众反感。
One unfortunate experience prejudiced him against all lawyers.
He’s strongly prejudiced against me.

SB be prejudiced agginst .如果后面没人就可理解主席表，有人就是被动了




10 The Ombudsman's prompt action at once put an end to an unpleasant practice which might have gone unnoticed.

司法特派员及时采取的行动，迅速制止了这一起不愉快的事件，不然这件事可能因未得到人们注意而不了了之。
