文本

Hi, I’m George. My brother, his wife, and their two daughters are in town. I promised the girls I’d take the family to an amusement park. I don’t really like roller coasters, but I knew the kids would. On Saturday morning, the family and I drove down to the theme park. We parked and took a shuttle bus to the park entrance. We looked at the ticket prices and decided to buy a day pass for each of us. Maria, the younger of the two kids, is only two years old, and children under three get in free. The first thing we did was to stand in line for the biggest attraction in the park: a huge roller coaster. Actually, only Grace and I stood in line since Maria was too young to ride it. Grace and I finally made it to the head of line, and we climbed into the little car. Grace loved it, but I really don’t like roller coasters. Part 3 Passage 2

文本

It can take days to send a letter across the country and weeks to go around the word. To save time and money, more and more people are relying on email. It’s fast, easy and much cheaper than postage.

What is email? In its simplest form, email is an electronic message sent from one device to another. While most messages go from computer to computer, email can also be sent and received by mobile phones and other devices. With email, you can send or receive personal and business messages with attachments, such as photos or documents. You can also send music, video clips and software programs.

Just as a letter makes stops at different places along the way to its final destination, email passes from one computer, known as a mail server, to another as it travels over the Internet. Once it arrives at the destination mail server, it’s stored in an electronic mailbox until the intended receiver opens his email account. This whole process can take seconds, allowing you to communicate quickly with people around the world at any time of the day or night.

Part 3 Passage 2

文本

Black bears are becoming a serious problem in America’s national parks. In Yosemite Park, where 500 of the country’s 500,000 bears live, the animals broke into more than 1,050 cars last year. The bears are usually looking for bags; they know that food is often kept there.

Bears like human meals of meat and vegetables. They simply love junk food. They eat hamburgers and chips, but leave healthy salads. It is really hard for them to get the calories they need from normal bear food such as grass, fish and berries, so it is not surprising that they try to find fattening food.

Bears that broke in are taken away from the parks, bur usually they return sooner or later, If they are caught breaking in again, they are shot.

Visitors can help prevent the bears from breaking in by not leaving food in cars and tents. However, many people are just too lazy and the bears pay the price.

He doesn’t have a car or a TV set. He doesn’t have many clothes and he doesn’t care about money when he makes a lot of money, he gives it away. He doesn’t smoke and he works from six in the morning until late at night, seven days a week: he is paying back to America his debt as a citizen. When he went to parties as a young man, people complained that all he talked about was the dangers of cars, and how bad car design caused the deaths of so many people each year. After he graduated from Harvard, he published an article entitled “Unsafe at Any Speed,” which was about a car called Corvair. Later, he made a big attack on the car industry and showed how many deaths in car accidents were because of badly-made cars. He said new laws were needed to make cars safer. In 1966, because of Nader’s work, a law was passed to make car safer. After this success, Nader became interested in something very different. This was the quality of meat and the amount of meat that is put into foods like sausages and hamburgers. Book Three UNIT 1 Section One Part 1 Spot Dictation Houses in the Future Well, I think houses in the future will probably be (1) quite small but I should think they'll be (2) well-insulated so that you don't need so much (3) heating and (4) cooling as you do now, so perhaps very economical (5) to run. Perhaps they will use (6) solar heating, although I don't know, in this country, perhaps we (7) won't be able to do that so much. Yes, I think they'll be full of (8) electronic gadgets: things like very advanced televisions, videos, perhaps videos which take up ... the screen (9) takes up the whole wall. I should think. Yes, you'll have things like (10) garage doors which open automatically when you (11) drive up, perhaps electronic (12) sensors which will (13) recognize you when you, when you come to the front door even. Perhaps (14) architects and designers will be a bit more (15) imaginative about how houses are designed and perhaps with the (16) shortage of space people will think of putting gardens (17) on the roof and, and maybe rooms can be (18) expanded and, and (19) contracted* depending on what you use them for, so perhaps there'll be a bit more (20) flexibility about that.

CET-6 Conversation One W: I don’t know what to do. I can’t seem to get anyone in the hospital to listen to my complaints and this outdated equipment is dangerous. Just look at it. M: Hmm, uh, are you trying to say that it presents a health hazard? W: Yes, I am. The head technician in the lab tried to persuade the hospital administration to replace it, but they are trying to cut costs. M: You are pregnant, aren’t you? W: Yes, I am. I made an effort to get my supervisor to transfer me to another department, but he urged me not to complain too loudly. Because the administration is more likely to replace me than an X-ray equipment, I’m afraid to refuse to work. But I’m more afraid to expose my unborn child to the radiation. M: I see what you mean. Well, as your union representative, I have to warn you that it would take quite a while to force management to replace the old machines and attempt to get you transferred may or may not be successful. W: Oh, what am I supposed to do then? M: Workers have the legal right to refuse certain unsafe work assignments under two federal laws, the Occupation or Safety and Health Act and the National Labor Relations Act. But the requirements of either of the Acts may be difficult to meet. W: Do you think I have a good case? M: If you do lose your job, the union will fight to get it back for you along with back pay, your lost income. But you have to be prepared for a long wait, maybe after two years. Conversation Two W: Mr. Green, is it fair to say that negotiation is an art?
