A Senegal man is attempting to prove he can build and sell drones (无人机) in his home country. Mamadou Wade Diop has experience of working with drones in the photography and health industries. In fact, he is one of the few people in Senega's capital Dakar who can repair them.

But recently, he decided to take his knowledge of the devices a step further.

Diop's goal is to use local materials and skilled workers in Senegal to make t he drones. However, not all of the necessary materials are available right now. But Diop wants to prove that it is possible to make the technology in his home country. Diop says he has been able to learn from other drone makers in France and China through the Internet. He has learned about their experiences to help him progress with his home-grown drone project. Diop plans to build his first locally-produced drone for use in the health industry. The drone will be designed to spread chemicals to prevent mosquito reproduction. Mosquitoes can carry and spread serious diseases.

One of the materials needed for Diop's drone is a carbon fiber that is not available in Senegal. He says he ordered the material from China, but then worked with local iron workers to shape the pieces for his drone. He got aluminium (铝) from a broken refrigerator to form part of the body for his drone.

Mamadou Diallo, the owner of a photography shop, said there is not a large market for drones in Senegal right now but demand for the flyers is rising. Diallo says he wants to support Diop's efforts to create the first “Made in Senegal” drone. Diop

It could be the return of "The Blob(变形怪体)," and scientists are worried. A mass of warm water extending from Baja California in Mexico all the way to Alaska and the Bering Sea could result in death for many sea lions and salmon, as well as poisonous algae(藻)blooms that can poison mussels(贻贝),crabs and other sea life. When it happened in 2014 it was known as "The Blob” and disturbed sea life between Southern California and Alaska. Now it's back. The ocean heat wave began to form in June.

The surface temperatures in the affected areas are 5 to 7 degrees above the long-term average. The so-called blob(一团)covers an area of 4 million square miles, or three times the size of Alaska. It's 165 to 325 feet deep. The warming comes from some high pressure that keeps winds calm.

Whether it will last as long as the 2014 heat wave is impossible to know. "If the

weather patterns that led to its development change all of the sudden and we get some cold weather and storms, then it could disappear pretty quickly,” said Stephanie Moore.

The heat waves are unprecedented. Satellite records go back about 40 years and ship observations 100 years, but nothing in the historical record has matched either of these two events.

Along the California coast, the blob-like warm areas are still about 1,000 miles away from shore.

In Washington state, the warm area has reached the shore, where it is causing a poisonous algae bloom that has prompted health officials to warn against eating mussels from state beaches.

Mussels have been collected on Washington shores that contained more than 10 times the regulatory limit of the toxin for human consumption. The warm area that continued to exist off the West Coast in 2014 and 2015 wasn't something scientists had seen before.

8. What do we know about "The Blob”?

A. It occurred frequently in the USA.

B. It made sea products unfit to eat.

C. It was the most severe pollution.

D. It struck the Bering Sea per summer.

9. What resulted in "The Blob”?

A. Ocean surface.

B. Warm wind.

C. High air pressure.

D. Alaskan's climate.

10. What does the underlined wo rd "prompted” in Para. 6 mean?

A. Caused.

B. Intended.

C. Banned.

D. Expected.

11. In which column may the text appear in a paper?

A. Entertainment.

B. Culture.

C. Science.

D. Environment.

European researchers say they have created a process that can produce oxygen from moon dust. The process could provide a major source of oxygen for humans taking part in moon exploration activities in the future. Researchers from the European Space Agency (ESA), carried out the experiments at a laboratory in the

Netherlands. They reported their results in a study published in Planetary and Space Science.

The team says ESA's experimental "plant" was able to successfully produce oxygen from simulated(仿造的)moon dust. The dust is part of a material known as regolith, a top layer of dirt and rock fragments that sit on the surface of the moon. Samples of regolith returned from the moon have confirmed that the material contains about 45 percent oxygen by weight. However, the oxygen is chemically locked in the form of minerals or glass, so it is not easily available for use. Having real samples of regolith from the moon made it possible for the researchers to create the simulated moon dust material used during testing.

ESA's long-term goal is to design an oxygen-producing "pilot plant" to operate full-time on the moon. The first technology demonstration(演示)of the system is expected to take place in the middle 2020s. Beth Lomax of the University of Glasgow was a lead researcher on the project. "Being able to acquire oxygen from resources found on the moon would obviously be hugely useful for future lunar settlers, both for breathing and in the local production of rocket fuel," she said in a statement.

The researchers reported that "as a bonus", the process also results in the production of usable metallic materials. ESA researcher Alexandre Meurisse said the finding that a number of metals are left behind was an important discovery.

ESA and the U.S. space agency NASA are both working on plans to return human beings to the moon. NASA has set a goal for 2024, with the aim to keep humans on the moon for long periods. ESA officials say the latest experiments were part of expanded engineering development aimed at finding new ways for lunar materials to be used to support future human activities.

Last August, NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida announced its own plans to develop a device that would melt lunar regolith to extract oxygen.

The NASA plan would involve heating the regolith to more than 1,600 degrees Celsius and then flowing electricity through the material, the agency explained. The process would attempt to cause a chemical reaction to split the regolith into oxygen and metals.

Kevin Grossman is a materials science expert at Kennedy Space Center. He said researchers will be carrying out experiments to test the technology with the goal of getting NASA, in his words, "one step closer to an automated mass production of

oxygen on the Moon."

12. How will the process benefit humans according to the study?

A. By creating warm air for researchers on the moon.

B. By providing rocks for the production of minerals.

C. By testing the weight of the oxygen contained in moon dust.

D. By offering oxygen for people conducting studies on the moon.

13. What makes oxygen difficult to produce during the ESA's experiment?

A. Its poor quality.

B. Its small quantity.

C. Its form of existence.

D. Its complex structure.

14. What is the "bonus" in the new process?

A. Usable metals.

B. Fresh oxygen.

C. Rare minerals.

D. Precious glass.

15. What is the best title of the passage?

A. European Researchers Discovered Oxygen From Moon Dust

B. Oxygen Found for Humans Taking Part in Moon Exploration

C. Oxygen Successfully Produced From the Moon Dust

D. Mass Production of Oxygen achieved on the Moon

第二节(共5个小题;每小题3分,满分15分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余项。

The Science of Risk-Seeking

Sometimes we decide that a little unnecessary danger is worth it because when we weigh the risk and the reward, the risk seems worth tasking. 16 . Some of us enjoy activities that would surprise and scare the rest of us. Why? Experts say it may have to do with how our brains work.

The reason why any of us take any risks at all might have to do with ea rly humans. Risk-takers were better at hunting, fighting, or exploring. 17 . As the quality of risk-taking was passed from one generation to the next, humans ended up with a sense of adventure and a tolerance for risk.

So why aren’t we all jumping out o f airplanes then? Well, even 200,000 years ago, too much risk-taking could get one killed. A few daring survived, though, along with a few stay-in-the-cave types. As a result, humans developed a range of character types that still exists today. So maybe you love car racing, or maybe you hate

it. 18 .

No matter where you are on the risk-seeking range, scientists say that your willingness to take risks increases during your teenage years. 19 . To help you do that, your brain increases your hunger for new experiences. New experiences often mean taking some risks, so your brain raises your tolerance for risk as well.

20 . For the risk-seekers, a part of the brain related to pleasure becomes active, while for the rest of us, a part of the brain related to fear becomes active.

As experts continue to study the science of risk-seeking, we’ll continue to hit the mountains, the waves or the shallow end of the pool.

A. It all depends on your character.

B. Those are the risks you should jump to take.

C. Being better at those things meant a greater chance of survival.

D. Thus, these well-equipped people survived because they were the fittest.

E. This is when you start to move away from your family and into the bigger world.

F. However, we are not all using the same reference standard to weigh risks and rewards.

G. New brain research suggests our brains work differently when we face a nervous situation.

2019年浙江省十校联盟高三10月联考 英语试题 注意事项: 1.答题前填写好自己的姓名、班级、考号等信息; 2.请将答案正确填写在答题卡上。 第I卷(选择题) 一、阅读理解 One evening last summer, 11-year-old Owen and his mom put on white suits and taped their rain boots to their pant legs. Then they each grabbed a wooden pole with a large white cloth attached to it and started dragging the tools through the trees and grass in their Wisconsin backyard. They were looking for ticks(扁虱虫). Owen’s mom, Amy Prunuske, teaches microbiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Wausau. She studies diseases that ticks carry. Owen, though, is known as a citizen scientist. Citizen scientists are people—young or old—who help collect data for research projects. They usually aren’t professional scientists, or if they are, not in the field of the project. Still, their work can be incredibly important. Citizen scientists can help trained scientists gather data from all over the world—even from space. They can provide new ideas and new ways of thinking. Kids often make great citizen scientists because they tend to be curious and good at following precise directions. Sometimes they’re even better at these things than adults. And schools are convenient places for scientists to recruit big groups of helpers. As a bonus, citizen science often gets kids more excited about science. Citizen science takes advantage not just of many sets of eyeballs, but also of many minds. When professional European scientists in Austria were trying to find how best to encourage people to use less energy, they partnered with student citizen scientists. The adult scientists had a long list of questions for people about how much energy they used. Right away, the students noticed some problems the adults hadn’t thought of. There were too many questions, the kids said. And some of those questions were too complicated.
