Then ,there are the excitement and sense of achievement. A Good game will get your heart racing. Most games have skill levels from simple to difficult. Reaching a higher level, the player will have a sense of achievement.

Passage Two

Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following paasage. Why are so many people so afraid of failure? Quite simply because no one tells us how to fail so that failure becomes an experience that will lead to growth. We forget that failure is part of the human condition and that every person has the right to fail

Most parents work hard at either preventing failure or protecting their children from the knowledge that they have failed. One way is to lower standards. A mother describes her child's hastily made table as "Perfect " even though it wobbles on uneven legs. Another way is to shift blame. For instance, if John fails science, his teacher is unfair or stupid.

The trouble with failure-prevention devices is that they leave a child unequipped for life in the real world. The young need to learn that no one can be best at everything, no one can win all the time - and that it's possible to enjoy a game even when you don't win. A child who's not invited to a birthday party, who doesn't make the honor roll or the baseball team, feels terrible, of course. But parents should not offer a quick consolation prize or say, "It doesn't matter" because it does. The young should be allowed to experience disappointment - and be helped to master it.

Failure is never pleasurable. It hurts grown-ups and children alike. But it can make a positive contribution to your life once you learn to use it. Step one is to ask “Why did I fail?” Don’t blame someone else. Ask yourself what you did wrong, how you can improve. If someone else can help, don’t be shy about inquiring.

Success, which encourages repetition of old behavior, is not nearly as good a teacher as failure. You can learn from a bad party how to give a good one, from an ill-chosen first house what to look for in a second. Even a failure that seems definitive can prompt fresh thinking, a change of direction. After 12 years of studying ballet a friend of mine auditioned for a professional company. She was

turned down. “Would further training help?” she asked. The ballet master shook his head. “You will never be a dancer,” he said, “you haven’t the body for it.”

In such cases, the way to use failure is to take stock) bravely and ask, “What have I left? What else can I do?” My friend put away her shoes and moved into dance treatment center, a field where she’s both able and useful. Failure frees one to take risks because there’s less to lose. Often there is recovery of energy---a way to find new possibilities.

36. One of the ways for parents to protect their childrten from the knowledge they have failed is to _________.

A. tell them how to fail

B. shift blame

C. choose good teachers

D. raise standards

37. According to the passage, who will be blamed if children fail science?

A. Parents

B. Children

C. Nobody

D. The teacher

38. It is possibale to enjoy a game even you don’t win because ______.

D. your parents will praise you

39. It can be inferred from the passage that the writer’s friend _______.

A. was successful in dance therapy

B. hated the ballet master

C. got ahead with atudying ballet

D. tried another professional company

40. The author’s purpose in writing passage is to _______.

Passage Three

Questions41 to 45 are based on the following passage

A study of art history might be a good way to learn more about a culture than is possible to learn in general history classes. Most typical history courses concentrate on politics, economics, and war. But art history focuses on much more than this because art reflects not only the political values of a people, but also religious beliefs, emotions, and psychology. In addition, information about the daily activities of our ancestors—or of people very different from our own—can be provided by art. In short, art expresses the essential qualities of a time and a place, and a study of it clearly offers us a deeper understanding than can be found in most history books.

In history books, objective information about the political life of a country is

presented; that is, facts about politics are given, but opinions are not expressed. Art, on the other hand, is subjective; it reflects emotions and opinions. The great Spanish painter Francisco Goya was perhaps the first truly “political” artist. In his well known painting The Third of May, 1808, he criticized the Spanish government for its misuse of power over people. Over a hundred years later, symbolic images were used in Pablo Picasso’s Guernica to express the horror of war. Meanwhile, on another continent, the powerful paintings of Diego Rivera, and David Alfaro Siqueiros—as well as the works of Alfredo Ramos Martines—depicted these Mexican artists’ deep anger and sadness about social problems.

In the same way, art can reflect a culture’s religious beliefs. For hundreds of years in Europe, religious art was almost the only type of art that existed. Churches and other religious buildings were filled with paintings that depicted people and stories from the Bible. Although most people couldn’t read, they could still understand biblical stories in the pictures on church walls. By contrast, one of the main characteristics of art in the Middle East was and still is its absence of human and animal images. This reflects the islamic belief that statues are unholy.

41. What does the passage mainly discuss?

A. The difference between general history and art history.

B. What we can learn from art history.

C. The superiority of art history to general history.

D. The influence of artists over history.

42. One can learn more about a culture from a study of art history than from

general history classes because art history _____ .

A. shows us the religions and emotions of a people in addition to political values

B. does not focus on objective politics, or economics, or war

C. gives us an insight into the essential qualities of a time and a place

D. provides us with information about the daily activities of people

43. “Art, …, is subjective” (Line 2, Para. 2) means that_____ .

A. history is presented in it in a personal and emotional view

B. it can easily rouse our negative feelings towards society

C. history books only cover facts about politics of a country

D. it will find a ready echo in people’s hearts easily

44. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

A. Pablo Picasso expressed his political ideas with the symbolic images in his paints.

B. Unlike Francisco Goya, Mexican artists did not really express the political opinions in their works.

C. History books are objective because they often reveal political opinions.

D. Bible remains as the only type of art in Europe for centuries.

45. It may be concluded from this passage that____ .

A. most Europeans understand the Bible through church paintings

B. history teachers are more objective than artists

C. it is more difficult to study art history than general history

D. Islamic artists might adopt images of flowers or geometric forms for architectural decoration.

Part Two: Directions: In this part there is a short passage with five questions. Read the passages carefully. Then answer the questions in the fewest possible words.

A strict vegetarian is a person who never in his life eats anything derived from animals. The main objection to vegetarianism on a long-term basis is the difficulty of getting enough protein---the body-building elements in food. If you have ever been without meat or animal foods for some days or weeks, say, for religious reasons, you will have noticed that you tend to get physically rather weak.

Protein build up from approximately twenty food elements called “amino-acids”, which are found more abundantly in animal protein than in vegetable protein. This means you have to eat a great deal more vegetable than animal food in order to get enough of these amino-acids. A great deal of the vegetable food goes to waste in this process and from the physiological point of view there is not much to be said in favor of life-long vegetarianism.

Whether or not vegetarianism should be advocated for adults, it is definitely unsatisfactory for growing children, who need more protein than they can get from vegetable sources.

Most nutrition experts today would recommend a balanced diet containing elements of all foods, largely because of our need for sufficient vitamins.Vitamins were first called” accessory food factor” since it was discovered, in 1906, that most foods contain, besides carbohydrates, fats, minerals and water, these other substances necessary for health. The most common deficiencies in Western diets

today are those of vitamins. A well-balanced diet having sufficient amounts of milk, fruit, vegetables, eggs, meat, fish or fowl uauslly provides adequate minimum daily requirements of all the vitamins.

1.Without enough protein people tend to

2.What kind of people are called Vgeaians?

3.Vegetarianism is not favorable especially for

4.What do nutrition experts recommend?

5.According to the passage, what are Western diets commonly short for? III. Writing ( 30 points )
