Brief Introduction to Jingzhou

Overview

Jingzhou is a prefecture-level city in southern Hubei, located in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River on the Jianghan Plain, with an area of 14,100 square kilometers (5,431 sq mi). It is identified as National Historical and Cultural City, China's Excellent Tourist City, National Garden City, National Double-Support Model City,. Jingzhou has jurisdiction over two districts, three county-level cities and three counties: Jingzhou District, Shashi District, Shishou City, Honghu City, Jiangling County, Gong'an County, Jianli County and Jingzhou Economic and Technological Development District.

Jingzhou, a cultural ancient city with 2000 years history with the reputation of "the finest under heaven, being overwhelmed by 9 divisions"; one of the cradles of Chu Culture, and used to be the capital of the Chu State during the Spring and Autumn Period for totally 20 emperors, who had left extremely valuable cultural relics from their 400 plus years' reign equally comparable with the ancient Greek and Roman culture. Situated in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, this has been a strategic location of military importance since ancient times. In the Three Kingdom Period (220-589), the city was the focus of many disputes and wars. It is said to have been built with earth by Guan Yu. One of the four Chinese ancient classic works, Romance of the Three Kingdoms by Lo Kuan-Chung, was created just based on this period of history. Jingzhou, as the focus of quarrels then, has left many cultural relics

that are related to the stories of Three Kingdoms. Many legends and myths were also produced in this spiritual city.

Land of Fish and Rice

Jingzhou, which was crowned as "land of fish and rice","the granary of China" , has plenty of resources and products. It is the core area superior agricultural resource and a comprehensive agricultural production base of China. Food production of Jingzhou accounts for about one percent of the country's .The city also produces large quantities of cotton and oil plants, which supply the local needs of the province and are also shipped elsewhere. An agricultural products processing industry system (such as cotton, grain, oil, fruit, vegetable, Livestock And Poultry, fish, forest and paper) has been formed in Jingzhou.

Jingzhou hold an abundance of mineral resources with 35 kinds of minable minerals, the K-rich brines with approved reserves reach 10 billion ton. In addition to Jingzhou’s important river port along the Yangtze, expressways and a bridge across the Yangtze provid e the city with easy access to Hubei’s other major cities. State Highway 318, State Highway 207, the Yichang-Huangshi Highway as well as 14 province-level highways lead away from the city in all directions. The Jiaozuo-Liuzhou Railway and the Jingmen-Shashi Railway also connect the city with other cities throughout China. Yanka Port in Jingzhou is the third largest port in the middle and upper reaches of Yangtze River, after Wuhan and Chongqing.

In 2011,the total output in Jingzhou reached RMB 104.31 billion Yuan, which led the economy of Jingzhou into "100 Billion Yuan Club",increased 13.4% compared to the last year; local financial revenue reached RMB7.45 billion, increased 25.9%; local capital asserts investment reached RMB 77.37 billion, increased 37.4%; total retail sales of social consumer goods reached RMB55.68 billion, increased 17.9%; the average controllable income for citizen reached RMB 16513, and Farmers per capita net income reached RMB 7664.

A legend says that the Great Yu planned nine districts in the territory of China, and Jingzhou was one of them. In ancient times, the area was called both Jing and Chu. The names refer to a certain tree species. During the Shang dynasty, Chu was a region under the jurisdiction of the Shang. Jingzhou has always been an area of strategic military importance. During the Three Kingdoms period, Jingzhou was a strategic point where the Wei, Shu, and Wu competed. That period of time has not only engendered lots of wonderful sayings like "Liu Bei borrowed Jingzhou but never gave it back," and "Guan Yu lost Jingzhou due to negligence," but has also left behind plenty of historic sites.

As we all know Hubei province is located in the middle of Yangtze river, in central China hinterland, is one of the most important cradles of the splendid Chinese national culture, today I will introduce a famous scenic-spot-- Yellow Crane Tower to you in Chinese: Huang helou According to records, the tower was first built in 223 A.D during the Three Kingdoms period (220-280). It was estimated that up to the Tongzhi Reign of the Qing dynasty, as many as 300 poems about the tower had been found in historical literature. Cui Hao, a famous poet during the Tang dynasty (618-907), made the tower well known throughout China with his poem "Yellow Crane Tower". It is said that there are more than10000 poems about Yellow Crane Tower in total. Although destroyed many times in successive dynasties, the tower was rebuilt time and again until 100 years ago when it was, for the last time, reduced to ashes. The present tower is a complete reconstruction and is the result of four years of work beginning in 1981.the old tower was only 15 meters wide, the ground floor of the new structure was increased to 20 meters wide. The tower is 51.4 meters high and is five-storied with yellow tiles and red pillars .Each year the flow of the travelers reaches about 22o,ooo .They marvel at the splendid
