Here are a few examples of business customs in foreign lands that one should be cognizant of:

In Brazil, conversations can become very animated and involve physical contact and raised voices. Yet trying to dominate the conversation will meet with disapproval.

In Germany, it’s customary to wait to be introduced someone new by a third party. People are uncomfortable when approached by complete strangers.

When dining with co-workers in Japan, always let the host pay for the meal. Be sure to never leave your chopsticks placed vertically in a bowl of rice as this is only done at funerals. The Irish are enthusiastic conversationalists who often indulge in criticism of themselves as a people and Ireland as a country. If you’re involved in this type of conversation country will be roundly abused.

A job applicant has the responsibility for ascertaining certain types of information prior to the interview. First, the applicant should know what kind of job he wants and how that job relates to his career objective. It is important that the applicant be able to state his reasons for wishing to work for a particular company. Second, the applicant should seek as much information as possible concerning the company. For women a conservative, tailored suit or dress is appropriate. Both men and women should have neat, conservative length hair.

Although hairstyle and dress are matters of personal taste, many personnel directors form initial impressions form these characteristics. Most companies expect IT (Information Technology) managers to head an IT staff of computer technicians. But IT managers can also specialize in other areas. Some managers may also be responsible for keeping their company’s Internet safety. They protect both their company and their online customers from thieves.

Other managers focus more on the business rather than the technical part of computing. They become project managers, helping companies reach as many online customers as possible.

Some companies also look for IT managers who can act as trainers. These trainers help a company’s computer technicians keep up-to-date on computer skills.

Most companies require their IT managers to have both a bachelor’s degree and some experience in the computer field. Often, companies hire IT managers out of their existing staff of computer technicians.

Since IT managers are extremely important to companies’ success, it’s no surprise that they receive such high salaries – around US $56,000 a year to start with. And, in such a fast-changing field,

managers’ salaries usually increase after only a couple of years.

The world will be watching to see just how quickly e-commerce replaces the old ways of doing business. And as computers change the way the world does business, IT managers will be in the middle of it all. Few companies can survive without them.

1. Mr. Graber believed, therefore, that it might be advisable to consider setting up some research into these inspection methods. Several important sales campaigns were about to be launched, and, in addition, it was hoped that a number of trade delegations visiting Switzerland in the near future would place large orders for office equipment with Schweibeur and its associates. So there was a need to reduce poor quality as soon as possible. (7marks)

2. Mr. Graber referred to a trip round the world that he would be making within the next twelve months. He would be visiting many Schweibeur associates and subsidiary companies and look forward to seeing all those present once again, in their own countries. (3 marks)

3. In the discussion that followed, Mr. Aguirre said that he had also had reports about poor quality in some items. He thought that research into this problem could be very beneficial, and considered that it would probably show that a majority of supervisors were not flexible enough in their methods. Mr. Fox agreed that there was a case for looking into the whole problem in detail, and confirmed that many inspection staff might be rather conservative in their methods. Perhaps because they tended to be older employees. Miss Lachenal agreed that this opinion was probably correct, and suggested some aspects of the problem that might be examined by the research team. Some detailed discussion of these followed. (10 marks)

2018成人学士学位英语考试试题 I. Reading comprehension Passage 1 Since its founding in 1948, McDonald's has grown from a family burger (汉堡包) stand to a global fast-food chain, with more than 30,000 locations in 118 countries. With 58 million daily customers worldwide, McDonald’s is now s o ubiquitous around the globe that The Economist publishes a global ranking of currencies' purchasing power based on the prices charged at the local McDonald’s, called the Big Mac Index (巨无霸指数).That’s not to say that every nation carries the same m enu i tems: choices vary widely depending on location. Some Asian locations serve fried shrimp in a Big Mac roll, while McDonald’s in India doesn’t serve beef at all, relying instead on burgers made from vegetables, rice and beans. Not everyone in the world has been happy to greet Ronald McDonald when he moves to town. Many s ee McDonald's as a symbol of American economic and cultural chauvinism (沙文主义), and European nations in particular have viewed American-style fast food as an insult to their national food. A French farmer, Jose Bove, became something of a national hero in 1999 after he and a group of people destroyed a McDonald's under construction to protest globalization and "bad food." The next year, a bomb e xploded in a French McDonald’s, killing a 27-year-old employee. (76) (76)No one claimed responsibility. But regardless of whether you like their food or their policies, McDonald’s is still widely seen as one of the true pioneers of peaceful globalization. 1. According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT TRUE. A. McDonald's was founded in 1948. B. McDonald’s has opened its restaurants in every city of the world. C. McDonald’s has over 30,000 locations in the world now. D. McDonald’s was very small in scale in the beginning. 2. The word ubiquitous in Paragraph 2 is most likely to mean ____. A. very crowded B. very dean C. existing everywhere D. occurring frequently 3. From Paragraph 2, we can conclude that ____. A. McDonald’s designs its menu to suit the local people B. millions of young adults got their first job with McDonald’s C. the McDonald’s menu sticks to old-fashioned favorites such as the Big Mac D. the low prices McDonald’s bring tens of millions of people through its doors every day 4. What did Jose Bove and his people do in 1999 to protest against McDonald's? A. They organized a strike. B. They protested outside a McDonald’s. C. They refused to go to a newly-built McDonald’s. D. They destroyed a McDonald’s under construction. 5. In ____, an employee died in a fatal bomb attack on a McDonald’s restaurant in France.
