Decades before the American Revolution of 1776, Jesse Fish, a native New

Yorker, retreated to an Island off St. Augustine, Florida, to escape an unpleasant family situation. In time he became Florida?s first orange baron(巨商) and his oranges were in great demand in London throughout the 1770s. The English found them juicy and sweet and preferred them to other varieties, even though they had thin skins and were hard to peel.

There would probably have been other successful commercial growers before Fish if Florida had not been under Spanish rule for some two hundred years. Columbus first brought seeds for citrus(柑桔)trees to the New World and planted them in the Antilles. But most likely it was Pone de Leon who introduced oranges to the North American continent when he discovered Florida in 1513. For a time, each Spanish sailor on a ship bound for America was required by law to carry one hundred seeds with him. Later because seeds tended to dry out, all Spanish ships were required to carry young orange trees. The Spaniards planted citrus trees only for medicinal purposes, however. They saw no need to start commercial groves(园林) because oranges were so abundant in Spain.

When Lewis and Clark stepped onto the Weippe Prairie in present-day Idaho in September 1805, they met the Nez Perce Indians. In the following years, the white explorers began to fight with the Indians for their land. Some Nez Perce chiefs signed agreements with the U.S. government, selling part of their lands. But the government always broke those agreements and demanded more land.

Other chiefs refused to go along with the government?s plans. The most famous was Chief Joseph, whose people lived in the Wallowa Valley(present-day Oregon).

“In order to have all people understand how much land we owned, ”he once explained, “my father planted poles around it and said: …Inside is the home of my people…It circled around the graves(坟墓)of our fathers, and we will never give up these graves to any man. ?”

But in 1874, the U.S. government declared the valley open for white settlement and ordered the Nez Perce onto a reservation(保留地). Seeing that resistance was useless, Chief Joseph agreed to move.

Later, fighting broke out between the Nez Perce and U.S. soldiers. Chief Joseph tried to lead his people to Canada, winning several battles against the soldiers during their flight. But finally, he was forced to give in.

Tests given to most elementary and high-school students in the United States have an unfavorable (不好)influence on science and math teaching, according to a new $1 million study performed for the National Science Foundation.And because schools with high minority enrollments(入学)generally place a greater reliance(相信)on scores from these tests, the study finds,there tends to be “a gap in instruc tional emphases between high and low minority classrooms that differs from our national concern for the quality of education.”

George F.Madaus and his colleagues at Boston College analyzed(分析) not only the six most widely used national standardized tests, but also the tests designed to accompany(go with)the four most commonly used science and math texts in fourth-grade,eighth-grade,and high-school classrooms.Though curriculum(teaching program)experts argue that schools should place greater emphasis on problem solving and reasoning, the new study shows that the tests focus on lower-level skills—primarily mechanical memorization of routine formulas(公式).
