Uncle Jeremiah sighed. He wondered if he had made the right decision in agreeing to look after Ant and Cleo over the school holidays while their parents went to London to catch a month-long festival of Shakespeare plays.

Ant and Cleo were having a whale of time staying with their research scientist uncle. They easily bullied(欺负)him into letting them stay up to watch the late-night creature features. ARTU is not human, he is mechanical—that‘s right, a real-life robot police officer, like the one made famous by Arnold Schwarzenegger in Robocop! ATRU (Advanced Tactical Robotic Unit) is the next weapon in the war on crime. Now in development by a team of robot specialists, ATRU is a 1,000-pound fighting machine that can zero in on bad guys and wipe them out without sacrificing innocent lives. ―ARTU is an efficient and effective tool against crime,‖ said one of the robot policeman‘s developers. ―We still have s ome finishing touches to do, but within a few months, we plan to approach the Los Angeles Police Department about adding him to the police force.‖

The Los Angeles Police Department already has several robots, including one used for seeking out objects or criminals and one that can be programmed for tasks such as lifting dangerous objects, firing a water cannon(大炮)or exploding a bomb. ARTU‘s creators say their robot combines the separate capabilities of all those machines into one single, powerful unit that does it all. Better still, ARTU can make its way into confined spaces, unlike the present ones used. He stands eight-feet tall when fully extended with fully flexible arms and legs, rather than being a square, tank-like vehicle with limited mobility. ARTU can also carry out many other police duties besides the ones mentioned. ―He‘s an all-purpose crime fighter,‖ says one team member. ―He can handle terrorist situations, explosive devices, armed robberies, security in large crowds and even missing-person searches in disaster situations.‖

ARTU is also fitted with a body heat sensor that enables it to detect criminals in hiding, or victims trapped in fallen buildings. The robot carries a fully automatic weapon that he can fire with 100 percent accuracy. If that is not enough to scare suspects off, ARTU‘s specially-programmed brain also allows him to sense a hostile(敌意的,危险的) action in milliseconds. ―The real beauty of that‖, says a team member, ―is that we don‘t have to worry about the ARTU making a mistake and s hooting unarmed people who look like they‘re raising a gun. He can make the kind of split-second decisions that human police officers fear because there is often so much room for error.‖Currently, ARTU is being fine-tuned to make him quieter and faster. ―But those are minor points, really,‖ says a team member. ―We expect to be finished by the end of the year and by that time, we‘ll have an all-round robotic police officer, ARTU and his ―mates‖ will be in demand from police agencies around the world.‖

72.Which of the following statements is TRUE about ARTU talked about in the passage?

A. It is a human police officer who fights against crimes.

B. It is a machine in development intended for police duties.

C. It is a robot already used by Los Angeles Police Department.

D. It is an efficient tool which appeared in a well-known movie.

73.From the passage we may draw the following conclusions EXCEPT that ____.

A. ARTU is being perfected at the moment

B.ARTU can be of great use in life searching after earthquakes

C.The writer of this passage is sure about the popularity of ARTU

D.ARTU will take the place of the police force to fight against crimes

74. According to the third paragraph, we know that ____.

A. ARTU is superior to human police officers in making great decisions.

B. ARTU will fire once it senses armed people with 100 percent accuracy

C. it is likely that human police will misjudge whether a person has weapon

D. with a body heat sensor, ARTU can tell whether someone is a potential criminal

75.What might be the best title for this passage?

A. Fighting against Crimes

B. A Real-life Robocop

C. The Next Weapon in the War

D. An Effective Robot

Sometimes a keyword will come up with items totally unrelated to the subject you are interested in. A student researching plasma in the universe would type in the word ―plasma‖, and be forced to look through scores of sites referring to plasma televisions. The fastest way to solve this is to use the exclude function, the hyphen(-). Search ―plasma -tv‖ and you will eliminate irrelevant sites.

A wonderful feature of Google search is the cache (缓存)option. In virtually all search results, you will see a link to cached versions of pages you are looking for. You usually won‘t need to refer to these archival pages, but if your search ever turns up an old news page, for instance, you may find that when you click on the link, the page no longer exists, even though it turned up in the search results. In that event, simply click on the cache link, and that will retrieve the last saved version of the page that had failed to show. This is a powerful, extremely helpful tool 80.

Did you know you can search for pictures with Google? Just go to the Google home page, click on ―Images,‖ and type in what you are looking for. You can narrow your searches using the advanced search function to, for example, retrieve certain types or sizes of files.

Directions: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words.

The British government has started a campaign to ban British schoolchildren from speaking slang in the classroom in an attempt to improve their academic performance. Fears have been raised that the constant use of street slang and the rejection of traditional English speech patterns and vocabulary is contributing to the educational failure of pupils.

As part of a government pilot progamme, students at Lilian Baylis School, in south London, are being taught that slang is only appropriate in certain circumstances and that they must master standard English. Inspectors found that students often used slang phrases in their written work.

Gary Phillips, the head teacher, said, ?All the children, not just our Afro -Caribbean pupils, drop into south-London slang. For the pupils, it‘s about a sense to identity or a way to be a cool south -London person. Sometimes, it‘s used as an act of defiance. However, exams require standard English and if you don‘t say it, you can‘t write it. We‘ll pull pupils up if they‘re caught using slang during classroom time.‘

In some examples of slang, the word ?the‘ becomes ?de‘ while ?them‘ becomes ?dem‘. Also ?that‘ is pronounced

?dat‘ and ?ask‘ is ?arks‘. V erbs are often omitted too, so ?I have got to go now‘ becomes ?I got to go now.‘ Other common techniques include substituting ?th‘ with ?f‘, for example ?strengf‘, while ?s‘ is added to the ends of words inappropriately, such as ?mousse‘. Also, ?ed‘ is added to verbs, so ?I saw‘ becomes ?I sawed‘.

At Lilian Baylis School, staff are told that if a pupil uses slang in class, the teacher has to write it on the board and tell the class what the proper English phrase for it is. He or she will then put a tick next to the slang each time it is repeated to show how often pupils slip into the habit.

Trevor Phillips, chairman of the Commission for Racial Equality, supported the initiative. He said: ―If children want to get through exams and succeed, they are going to have to speak and write standard English –there is no substitu te for it.‖

(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TWELVE WORDS.)

Section B Passages

Directions: In section B, you will hear two short passages, and you will be asked three questions on each of the

passages. The passages will be read twice, but the questions will be spoken only once. When you hear a question, read the four possible answers on your paper and decide which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard.

Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.

Life at college is filled with excitement and entertainment. However, most students do not know how to use their time wisely. The following advice should help you manage your time better and get more out of your college experience.

Firstly, get organized. Organizing your work is necessary if you are going to be successful. Many students do not plan their routine, so unexpected problems can easily appear. Also, it can be very hard to clean up if you don‘t organize your room and the things inside it. It is very important to keep yourself organized.

The second thing you‘d better to do is to find a hobby. Finding yourself a good hobby is a great way to avoid getting bored. Hobbies can fill up much of your free time and give you something to focus on. Choose something that is easy to organize and inexpensive. Many students also join clubs connected to their hobbies, which can be a good way to make new friends.

What‘s more, set clear goals. Setting goals for yourself is the first step towards success. Sometimes, college life can seem difficult and disappointing. If you give yourself clear and realistic goals, and work hard to achieve them, you will find everything a lot easier. Achieving your goals can be very satisfying, and will give you the confidence you need for life after graduation.

11. What is the best way to avoid unexpected problems?

12. What is the advantage of taking up a hobby?

13. Who is the speaker talking to?

Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.

Were you the first or the last child in your family? Or were you a middle or an only child? Some people think it matters where you were born in your family. But there are different ideas about what birth order means. Some people say that oldest children are smart and strong-willed. They are very likely to be successful. The reason for this is simple: parents have a lot of time for their first child, they give him or her a lot of attention. So this child is very likely to do well. An only child will succeed for the same reason. What happens to the other children in the family? Middle children don‘t get so much attention, so they don‘t feel that they‘re important. If a family has many children, the middle one sometimes gets lost in the crowd. The youngest child, though, often gets special treatment. He or she is the baby. Often this child grows up to be funny and charming. Do you believe these ideas of birth order too? A recent study saw things quite differently. The study found that first children believed in family rules. They didn‘t take many chances in their lives. They usually followed orders. Rules didn‘t mea n as much to later children in the family. They went out and followed their own ideas. They took chances and they often did better in life.

14. According to common belief, in what way are the first child and the only child alike?

15. What do people usually say about middle children?

16. What do we learn about later children in a family from a recent study of birth order?

Blanks 17 through 20 are based on the following conversation.

W: That‘s right. Are you thinking of going there?

M: Yeah, I‘m thinking of going for Christmas.

W: Hmm, I wouldn‘t go over Christmas. That‘s the rainy season.

M: Yeah? Does it rain a lot?

W: Every day. Not a good time, believe me.

M: When does the rainy season end?

W: Around April. And then it‘s beautiful right up until around September.

M: Hmm. What about May? Probably better, don‘t you think?
