Background
On April 27, 1947, baseball legend Babe Ruth, diagnosed with a terminal case of throat cancer, attended "Babe Ruth Day" at Yankee Stadium. "The Bambino," as he was known to his millions of fans, spoke that day of his love of baseball and his new position as director of baseball for the American Legion.

Back where he belongs and to know that Babe Ruth is going to be with us kids, well that's the biggest and best thing that could happen in baseball. From all of us kids，Babe, it's swell to have you back.

I now close my military career and just fade away, an old soldier who tried to do his duty as God gave him the light to see that duty.

I have just left your fighting sons in Korea. They have met all tests there, and I can report to you without reservation that they are splendid in every way.
