1. Why Endnote?
A citation management software that helps you organize your readings and cite
the sources while writing your paper.
Introduction
I
Format the essay according
to a selected citation style , e.g. APA style.
in-text citations to acknowledge the work of another person.
Automatically create the
reference list in your essay.
What if you do not acknowledge others’ works?
This will constitute plagiarism.

2. Who can download?
HKU has taken out an Endnote site licence which permits current HKU staff and students to use Endnote both on campus and on their Mac.

Enter a filename , e.g. animals.
5. Create an Endnote Library
Select from the top bar menu: File > New
animals.enl
How many libraries can I create?
● You can create as many libraries you like.
●
Normally we create one library for each distinct research topic. Then, use the Groups feature to manage the references.

Important: Please use Firefox for exporting records to Endnote.

Click on Save to produce the library with the default extension enl and the Data folder.

Save as Package:
Save the library and the data folder as a single document.

Enter the citation information , e.g. author, title, year.
Select the
reference type , e.g. book, journal article
Click on the New Reference icon from the Endnote top icon bar.
Close the window when done. This will
save the reference to your library.

Special Note
Author Names
Personal names
● First Middle Last (no comma)
● Last, First Middle (comma after the last name)
Corporate author
● Organization, (1 comma after the organization name)
● Department,, Organization (2 commas after the department name)
More than one author
● Enter one author per line.
Auto-complete
● For author names that are already in the library, Endnote will auto-complete
the name after you have typed in the first few letters.
● If the author is a new name, it will appear in red, but will change to black when
the reference is saved.

Enter dates as you would like them to appear in your formatted list or bibliography. EndNote does not reformat dates.

Open the pull-down menu for Output Style. Choose Select Another Style .

Enter name of your citation style and then press Enter.
Change citation style

click on Choose .
4 In the preview pane , the citation will be changed to the selected style.
Scenario: Before you began using Endnote, you already have saved a folder of full text articles in
PDF format. Is there an easy way to input these references into your Endnote library?
Import a folder of PDF files to your library. PDF files with a valid Digital Object
Identifiers (DOI) will be converted into EndNote references. Select File > Import

Choose the folder containing the
PDF files.
Click on Import

Select PDF File or Folder as the Import Option.

Files with DOI contain the basic bibliographic information.

The files with no DOI
have the pdf filename under the title field.
The paper clip icon indicates the PDF files have been imported to the library.

Select the PDF file you have saved in Step 1.

Highlight the reference in your library.
From top bar menu, select References > File Attachments > Attach File.

A paper clip icon will be displayed against the reference.
Step 1: Download PDF full text
Download a PDF full text from your result list in Find@HKUL.

To open the PDF file, you can either:
Either: From top bar menu, select References > File Attachments > Open
with Preview.
Note: 1. Another way to insert file attachments is to drag and drop the file onto the reference
in either the Library window or the Reference window.
2. You can insert other file types , e.g. Word, Powerpoint, Excel files.
3. Up to 45 files per reference.
4. All file attachments are kept in the Data Folder of the corresponding Endnote library.
Or:
In the full record, locate the PDF file under the File Attachments field.

On the result list, click on the folder icon to select the desired records. (Note: To select all records on the page, click on Share > Results (1-10))

Once all records are marked, click on the Folder icon.
Tick the checkbox
to select all records
Click on the Export icon.

Select Direct Export
in RIS Format and then click on the Save button.
From the Opening delivery menu, choose to open with EndNote X7. Then, click on OK .
Highlight the reference(s) you would like to find full text.
Note: F or all references: Hold down command + A.
For individual references: Hold down the command key and click the references.
For a range of references: Hold down the Shift key.

Click on the Find Full Text icon.

Find PDF Full Text
Use the Find Full Text feature to locate full text to references in the library. PDF full text may be attached if the article is subscribed by HKUL. Maximum 250 records at a time.
Setup for Find Full Text:
In Endnote top bar menu, go to
EndNote X7
> Preferences
> Find Full Text
1. Tick all the 4 full text search options
2. Enter URL under Authenticate with:
http://eproxy.lib.hku.hk/login?url=
Wait while searching is in progress

Once Find Full Text is completed, Endnote will display:
● Found PDF: Number of PDFs found.
● Found URL: If EndNote cannot find the full text, the article URL may be inserted.
● Not Found: Number of records with no PDF/URL attached.

and select records
Step 2 Save the results
Step 3 Import to Endnote
From the result list,
check those which you consider as relevant.

Search Dragon and select your records
Search Dragon :

> Dragon (HKUL Catalogue) > Keyword/ Phrase
Click on Save Marked Records .

Repeat 2 and 3 for the other result pages.

Once you have gone through all the result pages, click on Export Saved List .
Select End-Note
Select Local Disk

The downloaded files are usually saved in the Downloads Folder
Step 3 Import the results to Endnote
Select File > Import

Choose the file you have saved in step 2.

First-time users,
choose Other Filters against Import Options
Enter Dragon and then press Enter
