Long ago, near the village of Hedley, there lived a strange and playful trickster (骗子), known as the Hedley Kow. Sometimes it looked like an ordinary object. Sometimes it looked like a donkey or a goat.

One evening, as an old woman went along the path, she saw an old iron pot lying in the ditch. “Fancy that,” she said. “Nobody seems to want this old pot. I will take it home and plant pretty flowers in it.”

When she tried to lift it, she saw that it was full of gold pieces. “W ell, now, if that doesn't beat all,” she said. “I'm rich! I can buy a fine house and fancy

clothes.”

The pot was heavy, so she tied her shawl(围巾) around it and began to drag it home. After a while, she stopped to rest. When she looked in the pot, she was amazed to see that it was full of silver pieces!

“Oh, my God!” she said. “I am the lucky one! If it were gold, thieves would have been after me. My friends might have been jealous. But I can hide these silver pieces, take out a few at a time, and live like a queen.”

She went on pulling the pot after her. She was nearing home now. At her gate, she looked into the pot. What a surprise! The silver had changed into a lump (块) o f iron. “Iron,” she said. “W ell, now! No one will be jealous or want to steal this from me. I can use this iron to prop my door open and let in fresh air and sunlight. Lucky me!”

As soon as she said that, the pot began to grow and later it became a goat. Then it jumped up and ran off down the road laughing.

“Fancy that!” said the old woman. “I believe I have seen the Hedley Kow! Not many folks can say that, and that's a fact. I'll just sit up by my fire tonight thinking about how lucky I was to see it for myself. I truly must be the luckiest person in the world!”

Honey(蜂蜜)from the African forest is not only a kind of natural sugar, it is also delicious. Most people, and many animals, like eating it. However, the only way for them to get that honey is to find a wild bees' nest(巢)and take the honey from it. Often, these nests are high up in trees, and it is difficult to find them. In parts of Africa, though, people and animals looking for honey have a strange and unexpected helper -------- a little bird called an honey guide.

The honey guide does not actually like honey, but it does like the wax (蜂蜡)

in the beehives (蜂房). The little bird cannot reach this wax, which is deep inside the bees’ nest. So, when it finds a suitable nest, it looks for someone to help it. The honey guide gives a loud cry that attracts the attention of both passing animals and people. Once it has their attention, it flies through the forest, waiting from time to time for the curious animal or person as it leads them to the nest. When they finally arrive at the nest, the follower reaches in to get at the delicious honey as the bird patiently waits and watches. Some of the honey, and the wax, always falls to the ground, and this is when the honey guide takes its share.

Scientists do not know why the honey guide likes eating the wax, but it is very determined in its efforts to get it. The birds seem to be able to smell wax from a long distance away. They will quickly arrive whenever a beekeeper is taking honey from his beehives, and will even enter churches when beeswax candles are being lit.

59. Why is it difficult to find a wild bees' nest?

A. It's small in size.

B. It's hidden in trees.

C. It's covered with wax.

D. It's hard to recognize.

60. What do the words "the follower" in Paragraph 2 refer to?

62. What can be the best title for the text?

B. W ax and Honey

C. Beekeeping in Africa

D. Honey-Lover's Helper

Even plant can run a fever, especially when they’re under attack by insects or disease. But unlike human, plants can have their temperature taken from 3, 000 feet away straight up. A decade ago, adopting the infrared (红外线)

scanning technology developed for military purposes and other satellites, physicist Stephen Paley came up with a quick way to take the temperature of crops to determine which ones are under stress. The goal was to let farmers precisely target pesticide (杀虫剂)spraying rather than rain poison on a whole field, which invariably includes plants that don’t have pest (害虫)problems.

Even better, Paley’s Remote Scanning Services Company could detect crop problems before they became visible to the eye. Mounted on a plane flown at 3, 000 feet at night, an infrared scanner measured the heat emitted by crops. The data were transformed into a color-coded map showing where plants were running “fevers”. Farmers could then spot-spray, using 50 to 70 percent less pesticide than they otherwise would.

The bad news is that Paley’s company closed down in 1984, after only three years. Farmers resisted the new technology and long - term supporters were hard to find. But with the renewed concern about pesticides on produce, and refinements in infrared scanning, Paley hopes to get back into operation. Agriculture experts have no doubt the technology works. “This technique can be used on 75 percent of agricultural land in the United States, ” says George Oerther of Texas A & M. Ray Jackson .

67.Plants will emit an increased amount of heat when they are______________.

A. sprayed with pesticides

B. facing an infrared scanner

C. in poor physical condition

D. exposed to excessive sun rays

68.In order to apply pesticide spraying precisely, we can use infrared scanning to____________.

A. estimate the damage to the crops

B. measure the size of the affected area

C. draw a color-coded map

D. locate the problem area

69.Farmers can save a considerable amount of pesticide by______________.

A. spot-spraying

B. consulting infrared scanning experts

C. transforming poisoned rain

D. detecting crop problems at an early stage

70.The application of infrared scanning technology to agriculture met with some difficulties; one of the reasons is _______________.

A. the lack of official support

B. its high cost

C. the lack of financial support

D. its failure to help increase production

W e can read of things that happened 5.000 years ago in the Near East,

where people first learned to write.

71 . The only way that they can preserve their history is to recount it

as sagas(传说) ---- 72 These legends are useful because they can

tell us something about migrations of people who lived long ago, but none could

write down what they did.

Anthropologists(人类学家) wondered where the remote ancestors of the

Polynesian peoples now living in the Pacific Islands came from. 73 But

the first people who were like ourselves lived so long ago that even their sagas,

if they had any, are forgotten. 74

Fortunately, however, ancient men made tools of stone, because this is easier

to shape than other kinds. 75 Stone doesn’t rot, and so the tools of

long ago have remained when even the bones of the men who made them have

disappeared without trace.

A. They may also have used wood and skins, but these have rotted away.

B. Descriptions of what important events happened in ancient times.

C. But there are some parts of the world where even now people can’t write.

D. legends handed down from one generation of story-tellers to another.

E. So scientists have neither history nor legends to help them to find out

where the first “modern men” came from.

F. But there is some doubt who began to write.

G. The sagas of these people explain that some of them came from Indonesia

about 2,000 years ago.

41---45 ABBCD 46---50 DBCDA51---53CCABD 56---58. C D A

59----62BCAD 63----66 BCAD 67----70 CDA C 71---75 CDGEA 21.B。

28.B。rather than与the sales girls形成比较结构,去掉rather than the sales girl旧可以看出宾语从句实际上是一个强调句,被强调的部分是宾语从句中的主语the sales manager,后面的rather than the sales girls也对句子谓语动词形式的选择形成了一定的干扰。

29.C。本句中的so pretty和like you都是用来修饰限定a girl的。 I can imagine a girl liking boxing.

30.A。 定语从句的主语应该是life,本句可以改写为: life had once been very hard for him, 所以在定语从句中介词for还缺少了一个宾语。所以选A。

从句用"had told...",主句应用"would have gone..."。

选代词it。

hold out“伸出,坚持”;stand out“突出”;find out“发现”都不符合语境。

42.B从后文中dashed over to the tree可知,作者认为松鼠捡山核桃不再是秘密了。43.B我发现洞中到处都是山核桃,be filled with是固定词组,意为“充满着”,符合语境;be covered with“覆盖”;be decorated with“用……

be proud of“自豪,高兴”,符合语境。be afraid of表示“害怕,担忧”;be ashamed of表示“感到羞愧”;be careful of表示“小心”。

otherwise“否则”;however“然而”;besides“除此之外还……”。

take place of“代替”;take notice of“注意到”;take charge of“负责”,都与语境不符。

(Content is better than riches)。

Often, these nests are high up in trees, and it is difficult to find them.

从第三段的inspiring acts... something someone did that made your day different or changed your life可知,Karma这里表示“运气”,所以答案选C项。

依据文章第二自然段第2行“...an infrared scanner measured the heat emitted by crops. The data were transformed into a color-coded map showing where plants were running…fevers?”,说明植物在发“高烧”,也就是说,“身体状况”不佳时才会散发热,所以选项C符合题意。

68.D。 依据文章第二自然段第4行“...showing where plants were r unning …fevers?.Farmers could then spot spray,...” 显然,选项D(确定有问题的地域)为最佳选项。

69.A。 依据文章第二自然段最后一句“Farmers could then spot-spray, using 50 to 70 percent less pesticide than they otherwise would”(采取点喷,农民们可以节省平时用量的50%至70%的杀虫剂),选项A符合题意。

70.C。 依据文章第三自然段的第1句“The bad news is that Palely?s company closed down in 1984,after only three years.Farmers resisted the new technology and long-term supporters were hard to find”,从中可以看出红外线扫描技术应用于农业遇到了一些问题,原因有两个:一是农民对新技术的抵制,二是难以找到长期赞助商。

Mrs Wilson,

I?m going out shopping, and won?t be back until about 5:00 p.m. I have taken with me the two books you asked me to return to the City Library. At about one o?clock this afternoon, Tracy called, saying tha t she couldn?t meet you at Bolton Coffee tomorrow morning as she has something important to attend to. She felt very sorry about that, but she said that you could set some other time for the meeting. She wanted you to call her back as soon as you are home. She has already told Susan about this change.
