Unit 11 Let’s Help Each Other

Teaching Objectives:

1.To master how to give orders and instructions;

Ⅰ.Warming-up

1. Discussion

1)Have you ever been in trouble?

2)Do you know how to ask for help and give instructions? Give examples.

3)Do you know organizations about helping others?

II Section 1 Talking Face to Face

1. Imitating Mini-Talks

1)Ask students to read the ten short dialogues loudly.

2)Ask some of the students to read the dialogues in class and correct the

pronunciation when necessary.

3)Work in pairs and practice the short dialogues.

2. Words and phrases

1). calm vt.& vi. (使)平静,镇静,安静;(使)平静下来

Calm down for a minute and listen to me. 你安静一会儿,听我说。

Calm down, there's nothing to worry about. 冷静点儿, 没有什么好担心的.

2)hold v. 拿着;握住;托住

Hold the baby while I load the car. 你先抱着孩子,让我把东西装上车。

She is holding her pen. 她手里拿着一支笔。

hold the sports meeting/a conversation/a lecture

3) matter n. 事件;(讨论、考虑等的)问题;重要性;物质

vi. 要紧,重要;有重大影响;有重要性

What’s the matter with you?

It doesn’t matter.

I talked over the matter with her.我与她谈论了那个问题。

4) on fire 着火

Some of the houses nearest the bridge were on fire. 离桥最近的一些房屋着火了。

Look at that smoke;that building must be on fire. 看那些烟, 那幢大楼一定是失火了。

3. Imitate and Perform

Assign students to work out in pairs and present it in class. The following are examples.

Task 1 Ask your teacher a question.

Student: Hello, Miss Li. I have some problems when learning English; I'd like to talk with you if you have time.

Teacher: Sure! What is it?

Student: Er...I am not good at listening I think. I just cannot catch the key words when listening. Teacher: Well, many students have this

problem. You just need some more practice.

Student: I do, thank you!

Task 2 Help a foreign friend to use chopsticks.

A: I do not know how to use chopsticks. Can you help me?

B: you can hold it in this way.

Task 3 Ask for advice.

A: What's the matter with you, Mary? You look a bit pale.

B: I'm afraid I’ve got a terrible cold. What should I do?

A: Have you taken any medicine?

Task 4 Offer help to a stranger.

A: Excuse me, can you tell me where I can exchange my money?

B: Yes, of course.

Task 5 Give instructions for making jiaozi.

A: Can you tell me how to make dumplings?

B: My pleasure. First of all, pour water into the wheat flour, and stir it until it becomes a piece of dough. Also get some filling ready. It can

be vegetables or meat.

A: Then what should I do with them?

B: Cut the large piece of dough into many small pieces, roll the dough with a rolling pin into round, thin wrappers.

A: How thin should the wrappers be?

B: It's up to you. You only need to make sure that the dumplings won't

burst when you boil them. But many people like thin wrappers. Then

put the filling in the center of a wrapper and fold it up. The last thing

to do is to boil them. In northern China, dumplings are dipped in

vinegar and soy sauce, and often eaten with a piece of raw garlic.(这取

比较remember to do 和remember doing

I remembered tuning off the lights when I left the room. (灯已经关了)

Remember to turn off the lights when you leave the room. (现在还没有关灯)

3) worry about

You don't have to worry about me. I'm a good swimmer.

He worried about how to make his living.

4) forget

I forget closing the door.

The light in the office is still on. He forgot to turn it off.

5) go ahead

Please go ahead with your story.

Work is going ahead.

Go ahead, we'll not interrupt you.

6) reply vt. vi. n. 回答,答复

She sighed, but didn’t reply. 她叹了口气,没有回答。

He failed to reply to my question. 他没能回答我的问题。

What did he do in reply to your challenge? 你提出与他较量,他作何反应?

8)take care of照料,照顾

The nurse takes good care of the baby.

Don't worry about me while you're away;I'll be taken good care of by our neighbors.

IV. 祈使句

1.祈使句表示命令、警告、提醒、建议、请求、叮嘱、号召等等。

谓语动词一律用原形。句子中通常不用主语,句末用惊叹号或者

句号,用降调。比如:

Knock at the door before entering, please.

Try some of this juice---perhaps you’ll take it.)

Look out! There is a train coming.

At the beginning, collect as many stamps as you can.

Leave her where she is!

2.祈使句的强调形式及否定形式

祈使句的强调形式是在整个结构之前加do。

如:Do be careful!

Do stop talking!

Do give my regards to your parents!

祈使句的否定形式是在整个结构之前加don’t或never。如:Don’t you be nervous!

以let为引导词的祈使句的否定形式通常是在Let’s或Let us /me后加not。如:Let’s not waste our time arguing about it!

Let’s not say anything about it!

3. 祈使句的反意疑问句

1).祈使句的反意疑问部分为肯定形式,要用shall,will。如:

Pass me the book,will you?

2).Let’s表示第一人称的祈使句,反意疑问句为“Shall we?”。如:

Let’s go for a walk,shall we?

Let’s forget it,shall we?

3).Let me和Let us 表示第二人称的祈使句,反意疑问句为“will you?”。如:

Let us go for a walk,will you?

4).其它行为动词引起的祈使句,无论其陈述部分是否定还是肯定的

祈使句,多用“will you?”,表一种客气的语气。如:

Listen to me,will you?

Don’t tell anyone about it,will you?

但在肯定的祈使句后有时也用“won’t you?”表“提醒对方注意”

或表“邀请”。如:Have a cup of coffee,won’t you?

Come in and take a seat,won’t you/will you?

4. 祈使句用于两个重要句型中

1).“祈使句+and+表结果的陈述句”用来叙述肯定的条件。

2).“祈使句+or(else)+表结果的陈述句”用来叙述否定的条件,or(else)

表示“否则;要不然”。试比较:

Hurry up and you’ll catch the train. (=If you hurry up,you’ll catch

the train.)

Hurry up,or you’ll miss the train.(=If you don’t hurry up,you’ll

miss the train.)

Teaching Notes Chapter One The Hierarchical Structure of Grammar ⅠTeaching Aims: This chapter aims to: 1.help students to know the hierachial structure of English grammar. 2.get students to learn morphemes words, phrases and sentences and their classification. ⅡTeaching Procedures 1.Introduction The grammatical structure of English is a hierarchical one, which can be divided into five levels, i.e. Sentence, Clause, Phrase, Word and Morpheme. A sentence is the largest unit and highest level in a grammatical structure while a morpheme is the smallest and lowest one. 2.Morphemes A morpheme is the smallest unit in English grammar, and also the smallest meaningful unit of language. 1) Free Morphemes Free morphemes are morphemes which can constitute words by themselves, e.g. boy, girl, work, water. 2) Bound Morphemes Some morphemes like de-, dis-, -ness, -ly are never used independently in speech and writing. They are always attached to free morphemes to form new words. These morphemes are called bound morphemes. Bound morphemes are mostly affixes. Affixes are attached to free morphemes either to form new words or to indicate grammatical categories. Affixes can be divided into two types: prefixes and suffixes. 3.Words 1)Simple Word, Derivative, Compound Word a)simple words (morpheme words):at, far, hand, get b)derivatives: prefixes: dislike, unhappy, pronoun, prewar suffixes: worker, widen, foolish, manly c)compound words: handbook, outline, moreover, anybody 2)According to grammatical function, English words can be classified into Closed Class and Open Class. a)Closed Class Closed class refers to all the Function words.
