The Summary of The Virtues of Ambition

The article primarily eulogizes the virtues of ambition while severely criticizing the contempt or disguise of ambition. At the beginning of the article, the author illustrates his views that the bias of many people hold to ambition and the positive functions of ambition. Then, the author specifies that ambition will produce two different results: one is a good result that is large-heartedness, and another is a bad one that is rancor. What’s more, the writer describes his points though some examples.

The author finds that people do not seem less interested in success and its accoutrements now than formerly. Instead we are treated to fine pharisaical spectacles, which now more than ever seem in ample supply. People against ambition from various angles, and people no longer feel its stirrings and prompting and less often openly professed. Too many people don’t believe ambition. They think that it represents something intractable in human nature, and many things should not sacrifice for the ambition. However, it is a wrong way that sacrificing ambition so as to guard against its potential excesses. Because what distinguishes us one from another is our ambitions. Ambition is the linchpin of society,holding many of its disparate elements together. We have to admit that the aspiring middle class has done much of society's work in America.

Finally, the author assumes that the world would probably be a kinder world if it shorn of ambition. But as time goes forward, and the ambition in people's mind will then disappear. Ah, how unrelievedly boring life would be!
