Week 1 Tourism I

1-1 Australia: A Land of Exceptional Beauty

Australia warmly welcomes visitors from all over the world.

Australia is a land of exceptional beauty. It is the world’s smallest continent and largest island, a relatively young nation established in an ancient land. A series of geological and historical accidents has made Australia one of the world’s most attractive countries from the tourist’s viewpoint. This country has a land area of 7,686,850 square kilometers and its coastline is 36,735 kilometers.

The vast movements of the earth’s crust created a vast land of Australia, isolated it and positioned it across the tropical and temperate climatic zones. This land has a small population, which left enormous areas unspoiled. Here you witness an astonishing variety of environments, from desert to rain forest, from tropical beach to white snowfield, from big, sophisticated cities to vast uninhabited areas. The tourist will admire a wide array of unique and intriguing fauna and flora, a comfortable and sunny climate, and an interesting, cosmopolitan and friendly people.

Tourism is a major industry in Australia, representing about 6% of the gross domestic product and providing, directly or indirectly, around 440,000 jobs. More than 2,000,000 tourists visit Australia each year, spending about $4,000 million. It is worth mentioning that the number of tourists from China is on the rise in recent years.

There are a variety of restaurants to suit all tastes and pockets, from top-class restaurants with international cuisine to small coffee shops serving snacks. All cities have a wide range of ethnic restaurants.

1-2 Niagara Falls (高口第三版P217,第四版P192)

Situated between the state of New York of the United States and the province of Ontario of Canada, and with an age of 25,000 years, Niagara Falls is one of the most spectacular natural wonders on the North American continent. The falls are on the Niagara River, which flows between the United States and Canada from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. The falls are about 17 miles northwest of Buffalo, N.Y. The industrial city and tourist center of Niagara Falls, N. Y., is adjacent to the American side of the falls. Niagara Falls, Ontario, is across the river.

The falls are divided into two parts by Goat Island. The larger portion, on the southwest side, is the Canadian falls, known as the Horseshoe Falls. It measures 790 meters along its curve and drops 49.4 meters. The smaller American falls is northeast of Goat Island. It is 305 meters across and drops about 51 meters. Just before flowing over the ledge, the American stream is only about one meter deep, while the Canadian stream is about six meters deep and carries some 95% of the Niagara River's water. Thus the Horseshoe is the larger and grander of the two falls.

Both the United States and Canadian governments have built parks, viewing platforms, paths, and highways. The Niagara Reservation State Park was established in 1885 and is New York's oldest state park. It includes an observation tower, elevators that descend into the gorge at the base of the American falls, and boat trips into the waters at the base of the Horseshoe Falls. At night colored lights illuminate the falls and create a charming spectacle which viewers find hard to turn away from. The park area has long been a tourist site and a favorite spot for couples to spend their honeymoons.

1-3 Yellowstone National Park (高口第三版P113,第四版P107)Welcome to the world's first national park, the Yellowstone Park of the United States. In this paradise, nature puts on a spectacular display. Geysers send water shooting into the air. Mud pots boil and bubble. Hot springs display brilliant colors of blue, yellow and orange. You won't find any place else like it on Earth.

The park's thermal areas make it unique. Geysers are also found in New Zealand and Iceland, but Yellowstone has more geysers than the rest of the earth combined. More than 200 geysers and 10,000 other thermal features dot the park. All are protected. The park does not allow visitors to wander off the walkways or touch the thermal features.

Take you time exploring the park. Walk around the thermal areas, look for wildlife along rivers and streams, have a picnic under a big tree, listen to the wild roar and feel the spray on your face. Nothing can take you away from the sights. The park was created for the benefit and enjoyment of all. So have a good time.

I’d like to make some special remarks on our tour programs.

First of all, the quotation for each tour includes all expenses in the destination country. This includes the cost of accommodation, meals, transportation, sightseeing, guides, airport departure tax, and a round-trip international airfare. The quotation is calculated on a per-person basis for a group of ten or more adults. The quotation for smaller groups will have to be determined by this travel agency.

Next, each person taking our tour has to pay for his or her personal expenses which may involve, for example, laundry, drinks, mini-bars in their hotel rooms, long-distances phone calls.

And finally, it is our principle to carry out a tour strictly according to the set itinerary, but we reserve the right to make any changes due to some unforeseen circumstances. We will give you notice of these changes as they occur, together with reasons.

Week 4 Traditional Culture

China has held many cultural exchange activities in Europe and other parts of the world. The coming China Culture Week in London is the largest cultural exhibition of its kind. May I know the purpose of staging such an exhibition?

What will be displayed within the seven short days?

Could you tell me more about the exhibition?

What about the performance? What do we expect to see?

What about the Peking Opera costumes to be displayed?

How many traditional operas are there in China?

What contributes to the sustained popularity of traditional Chinese operas?

In the west, operas are losing young audiences. What is the situation in China?

4-3 Traditional Chinese medicine (高口第三版P307,第四版P273)Traditional Chinese medicine says that good health is associated with the balance of qi – an energy force that flows through the body. Qi can be hindered or helped by yin and yang – opposing forces that, when balanced, work harmoniously together. According to traditional theory, the goal of acupuncture is to promote the flow of qi by keeping yin and yang in balance – and this is done by inserting needles at various points along primary channels and meridians that crisscross the body.

In China, acupuncture is used to alleviate post-operative pain. Medical experts believe that inserting needles into the body at precise points can stimulate nerves that cause the brain to release its natural pain-killing chemicals. There is sufficient evidence in the literature that shows a positive effect between the technique of acupuncture itself – stimulating these acupuncture points in the skin – and the release of substances in the brain which we know to be associated with the relief of pain.

Studies show that one of the key benefits of acupuncture that seems to be emerging from various studies is that it has few, if any, side effects; and that when used with standard drug treatment –– in anesthesia, for example –– it allows physicians to cut back on medication, delivering the same level of benefit with fewer negative effects.

4-4 Intangible Heritage

China's long history has given birth to numerous cultural marvels. Peking Opera and Chinese acupuncture are two shining stars.

Peking Opera originated in the late 18th century, It's a synthesis of music, dance, art and acrobatics. It's the most influential and representative of all opera forms in China. There are four basic performing skills, Chang, Nian, Zuo and Da, or singing, dialogue, acting and martial arts.

The artists start training at a very early age to master the required skills to perform. Like all other operas, one important element is the music. Peking Opera's melody with harmonious rhythms is graceful and pleasing to the ears. Recently, Peking Opera has acquired many international fans. In the theaters, you can see people from all over the world enjoying the refined art.

Acupuncture, on the other hand, is a treasure within traditional Chinese medicine. It generally refers to the procedure of inserting and manipulating needles into various points on the body to relieve pain or for therapeutic purpose.

The earliest record of Chinese acupuncture dates back over two thousand years. Despite its popularity amongst Chinese, for most of its history it was largely controversial in other parts of the world. But in the late 20th century, it became the subject of active scientific research both in regard to its basis and the therapeutic effectiveness. Nowadays, the method is commonly applied to help people relieve body pain, lose weight and other ailments.

The granting of intangible heritage status to Chinese Peking Opera and Acupuncture has once again shown the renewed life of traditional art forms, with the assistance of discovery of new science and technologies.

Week 5 Economic Reform

5-1 How Stable is the Global Economy ?

Let me conclude by returning to the question posed by the title of this session—How stable is the global economy? Ultimately, of course, this in an unanswerable question. By their nature, shocks are unpredictable. They always come from unexpected quarters. So we cannot know how stable the global economy is over the medium and longer term, because we do not—and cannot—know what events we need to guard against.

So we have to work with what we know. And from our experience of previous crises, we have accumulated knowledge about how to reduce, though not eliminate, the impact of unexpected and adverse events.

We know how important are the benefits that low inflation brings. Governments have come to recognize that sustained low inflation makes all kinds of decision-making easier; and their citizens like it too. There is a strong incentive to keep it low, and that in turn provides a strong incentive to persist with other sound policies as well.

The current global environment is, taken as a whole, about as promising as it has been for some time. There are clouds on the horizon: continuing geopolitical uncertainty; the global payments imbalances; uncomfortably high energy prices. But last year's growth performance was impressive by any standard. And low inflation globally has provided a significantly improved environment for economic policymaking.

5-2 The Real Great Leap Forward(高口第三版P350,第四版P338)“LET China sleep, for when she awakes she will shake the world,” runs Napoleon's famous saying. He was ahead of his time, but now the dragon is certainly stirring. Since 1978, when Deng Xiaoping first set his country on a path of economic reform, its GDP has grown by an average of 9.5% a year, three times the rate in the United States, and faster than in any other economy. The official figures may slightly overstate the growth rate, but China is still likely one day to overtake America and become the world's number one economy.

In fact, China was the largest economy for much of recorded history. Until the 15th century, China had the highest income per head and was the technological leader. But then it suddenly turned its back on the world. Its rulers imposed strict limits on international trade and tightened their control on new technology.

Measured by GDP per person it was overtaken by Europe by 1500, but it remained the world's biggest economy for long thereafter. In 1820 it still accounted for 30% of world GDP. However, by 1950, after a century of anarchy, warlordism, foreign suppression, civil war and the war against Japanese invasion, its share of world output had fallen to less than 5%.

Most of China's growth over the past quarter-century can be explained by high rates of investment and the movement of workers from subsistence farming, where their marginal productivity is close to zero, to more productive use in industry. But China's growth is not based simply on cheap labour. It also has the advantages of good infrastructure, an educated workforce, a high rate of saving available to finance investment and, most important of all, an extremely open economy.

5-3 Prudent monetary policy to reduce leverage

China’s interbank rates began spiking before the Dragon Boat festival earlier this month. While rates appear to have peaked, they remain at elevated levels. Comments from the Central Bank stating that they will "prudently manage liquidity risks that have resulted from rapid credit expansion" caused the Chinese stock market to plummet.

The statement is telling banks to tone down risky activities in the shadowing banking market and reduce their reliance on the central bank to bail them out when they face a cash squeeze.

The Central bank also stated that overall bank liquidity conditions are at a reasonable level. The M2 supply for the first 5 months of this year reached 16 percent, 3% higher than the government annual target. So why the abundant money supply in the system cannot meet the demand for cash? Cao says there is a mismatch in the system, the cash is not going into where it’s needed.

Cao says the growth of shadow banking loan products accounts for more than 20 percent of total loan growth. The size of shadow banking is around 20 trillion US dollars. China’s financial regulators are very aware of the issue and are now willing to accept slower growth and shorter-term hits to ensure the longer term health of the economy.

Week 6 E-commerce

6-1 Information Economy (高口第三版P86,第四版P82)We’re aware of an emergence of a new and exciting mode of information economy driven by networked technology. What I want to say is that the computer Internet is transforming business operation patterns and contributing to what is called the new information economy. An immediate consequence of this profound change is the simplification of business transaction.

Thanks to technology something very important is happening to the US economy. Indeed, something new and different is happening around us. We are able to grow faster without triggering inflation than we thought possible. Of course, there's the down side. The new economy does not mean we will never have another recession or even a deflationary spiral. It does not mean inflation is dead.

The emergence of electronic business has created enormous and exciting challenges for business managers. Internet commerce immediately opens global and more efficient markets.

I would challenge many people to tell me where it has not brought about greater efficiency in markets. We as consumers have benefited from that. In any case, the Internet will transform the way companies do business. And those companies that do not address that issue will not be the market winners.

6-2 Speech made by the Chairman of IBM

Today, in almost every industry in almost every part of the world there are many examples of enterprises applying this technology to seize competitive advantage and to create enormous challenges for their competitors. I think we're seeing information technology reach the point that all transformational technologies reach when they are no longer controlled by just a small group of skilled professionals, and they cross over to mass acceptance and ubiquity. For example, networking technology, though in its infancy, has already reached the point where we can call it a new mass medium.

Some people are talking about a phenomenon they call "Internet Leapfrog", a high-stakes game in which countries and geographies that make the most astute use of networked technologies quickly bypass other regions in production, productivity, and profitable growth. Today, this contest of Internet Leapfrogging is played on a wide-open field. We hear about 100 million connected users in China ... and some equate that with universal connectivity.

Today, it's evident that the Net represents a transformation far more profound than online "chat" groups or giving people access to sports scores and weather reports. It has emerged as a powerful means for parties of every type to conduct interactions of

every type. Certainly, it's changing the way things are bought and sold. Electronic commerce is booming, creating a marketplace of at least a trillion dollars, most of which comes from business to business transactions.

E-business includes transactions among employees inside an enterprise; among trading partners in a supply chain; and of course, the networked transactions that transform the way educators teach students, physicians treat patients, and the way governments deliver services to citizens. All of these interactions have become digital.

This kind of decision-making is the real revolution in the networked world. It's not just about technology. It’s a changed way of life, because when banks, schools, airlines, hospitals and governments use the Net to allow people to execute transactions, they have to make fundamental changes to the way they currently do things.

6-3 Alibaba faces tough rivals

The sound of money in the era of e-commerce from the warehouse of online clothes retailer HSTYLE. Launched just six years ago, the company last year booked sales of about 160 million U.S. dollars.

HSTYLE started with a virtual store front on Taobao. But today only about half its sales go through Alibaba's e-commerce platforms. The rest are on competing sites, like https://www.wendangku.net/doc/d68558632.html, or HSTYLE's own https://www.wendangku.net/doc/d68558632.html,.

HSTYLE isn't alone. As it gears up for a multi-billion dollar U.S. IPO, Alibaba is facing more challenges to its market dominance than ever. Euromonitor data shows last year for the first time Alibaba's online retail market share slipped as competition heated up.

But that's not all. Alibaba's arch rival Tencent - which owns the leading mobile messaging app, WeChat - just took a 15 percent stake in https://www.wendangku.net/doc/d68558632.html,, China's second largest e-commerce site. Industry watchers says that could pave the way for a killer mobile shopping app.

Alibaba is more upbeat. And the firm does boast high user numbers on some of its own mobile offerings, like payment system Alipay Wallet.

Alibaba is still China's online shopping frontrunner, but the loyalty of its vendors isn't guaranteed. And with cracks appearing in its dominance of the market, when it finally does list, it may not dazzle investors the way it used to.

Week 7 World Exposition

7-1 Speech by Tony Blair

The UK held the first World Expo in 1851. More than 150 years on, Shanghai will host the biggest, most high-profile Expo the world has ever seen. This incredible event is an important opportunity to strengthen the UK-China partnership. We can be proud of this partnership which brings our two countries together across the impressive, diverse range of areas from education and business to culture and science.

It's no surprise to me that UK participation in China's Expo extends so far beyond the physical pavilion. The Shanghai Expo offers the UK and China the opportunity to demonstrate our friendship and collaboration, from joint performances of our most celebrated performers to coming together to tackle global problems like climate change. So I sincerely wish the people of Shanghai and visitors to the Expo an exciting and rewarding experience.

And I hope you will come to our UK pavilion, learn more about the UK and get involved with the extensive arranged events we are holding in partnership with China.

I also hope you will take time to contemplate the many opportunities and challenges that face our increasingly globalised world and how each, and every one of us could contribute to creating a better city and a better life. Thank you.

7-2 Speech by US ambassador

I'm pleased to congratulate China on the opening of the Shanghai Expo, a major event of the world this year and one that will allow Americans and Chinese to continue to get to know each other on the deeper and broader bases.

America has hosted and participated in many World Expos since 19th century and we're excited to see this tradition carry on at the Shanghai Expo. Our participation demonstrates America's commitment to a forward-looking, positive relationship with China.

I invite you to visit American pavilion to learn about America's approach to creating "a better city and a better life". We have prepared a special theatre presentation that we hope will entertain visitors of all ages and inspire them to be part of efforts to improve their own communities.

The USA pavilion will also feature an array of American cultural performers -- from Blue Grass to Hiphop, to Jazz to classical music. One of the Grammy Award winning artists scheduled to perform is American Jazz legend Herbie Hancock.

I'm also particularly proud of our "Student Ambassador" program. Visitors to American pavilion will be greeted by American college students from schools across America. They have many different life experiences they will share with you. And all 160 student ambassadors speak Chinese, which demonstrates the importance American younger generation is placing on learning about China.

While the Expo is an opportunity to present some of the best of America to visitors, it is also an opportunity to learn from China and many of countries will be exhibiting about how they are working to improve their communities. I personally look forward to visiting other national pavilions to see the many exciting things they will have to offer.

I congratulate China on what I'm sure will be a spectacular world's fair. Come and see at the US pavilion.

7-3 Speech by the PM of New Zealand

Nihao, Congratulations Shanghai for hosting World Expo 2010. The Expo is on track to be the largest to date, showcasing China to the world.

New Zealand is proud to be part of that. We're expecting over 40,000 visitors a day to the New Zealand pavilion, and we're keen to show them the very best of our country.

The theme of Expo 2010 is "Better City: Better Life", and focuses on the new thinking and technologies needed for sustainable city living. New Zealand has plenty to bring to this theme.

We have just 4.3 million people, but 86 per cent of New Zealanders live in cities. We are a dynamic, innovative, and multi-cultural Asia Pacific nation with a real love of the environment and the outdoors.

Every year, many Chinese students study in New Zealand, and over 100,000 Chinese tourists come to our shores and enjoy a 100% Pure New Zealand experience - seeing our beautiful scenery, sampling our unique culture, and tasting our fantastic wine and food.

China is a vital partner for New Zealand. Today, one in 25 New Zealanders has Chinese heritage, and the links between our people continue to grow. The New Zealand China Free Trade Agreement is a world first and is bringing big rewards for trade and business in both countries. We look forward to building on our relationship in the years ahead.

In the meantime, I'd like to invite our friends from China and around the world to visit our pavilion. It's designed to reflect New Zealand's stunning beauty, introduce our friendly people, and showcase the innovation, creativity, and talent we have to offer. We're looking forward to showing you all around our pavilion.

Week 8 Business Interview

8-1 Interview of Mr. McIntyre, President of GE (China) Reporter:

McIntyre: Thank you. I am pleased to be here to share with your listeners some of my experience and our company’s business activities in China.

McIntyre: Very interesting question. My wife selected the name. She is originally “Shanghainese” and wanted to make sure I had a good Chinese name. Reporter:

McIntyre: I have been with GE for over 20 years and had a number of positions in manufacturing, marketing, sales, strategy planning and new business development.

McIntyre: GE is truly a global company in the top ten in the world in market valuation. GE has operations all over the world and is particularly complex in that it is not a one product company. We have thirteen major businesses ranging from aircraft engines to turbine generators to plastics and appliances. As a goal, we want each of our businesses to be No. 1 or No.2 in the USA.

McIntyre: Our long term survival depends on this success as more and more competitors enter the USA market. Achieving and maintaining a No.1 or No.2 market position is also driven by another factor – our continuing every day effort to become more productive and efficient to meet our customer needs and to drive our cost down. We must make the best product in the most productive way.

McIntyre: Two answers come to mind. One is that we must listen to our customers.

Listen, listen, listen, and then act. Listening and understanding and then performing are not easy. A second answer is people. Listen to our people. This includes: Opening communications. This means to continue to share with our employees the strategies and problems of our businesses to get their full participation in helping develop solutions.

McIntyre: Absolutely.

In 1979, GE re-established its business contact with China through

the opening of representative office in Beijing with additional expansion being planned.

McIntyre: To begin with, we feel strongly that the problem of balancing foreign exchange for foreign investors is an issue that needs to be addressed prior to signing an investment contract. One way to explore this is to see if there is a market for exports. There may also be other products made in China that can be exported to earn foreign exchanges.

McIntyre: Madam Zhang, thank you for inviting me. I hope this helps the English study of your audience as well as improves understanding of GE’s business ideas.

8-2 About foreign investment in China

Reporter: Hello, Prof. Wang. As we all know, since China adopted the policy of reform and opening up to the outside world in the late 1970s, its economy has enjoyed continuously fast growth ever since. Some top economic experts have claimed that successful utilization of foreign capital is another contributing factor to China’s economy. Do you have any comments on it?

Reporter: So, I’d like to know how China has attracted foreign capital for the past two decades.

Reporter: So far, how many countries and regions have investments in China? The number of source countries and regions is…

Wang:

Reporter: I remember that the very first Sino-foreign joint venture was founded in 1980, it demonstrated that China began to intentionally utilize foreign capital.

Reporter: In what areas are the Sino-foreign joint ventures involved?

Reporter: We have noticed that most Sino-foreign enterprises are located in the coastal cities. Can you tell us why?

Reporter: But in recent years, China’s investment has improved a great deal in general.

8-3 Interview of Jack Ma

CHARLIE ROSE: So what was it about you and creating these companies?

JACK MA: Well, I started the first Internet company in China in 1995 called https://www.wendangku.net/doc/d68558632.html,. Just by accident I came to the United States and I found Internet. Wow, this something is going to change the world, so I started the business – CHARLIE ROSE: You knew it was going to change the world and you saw it? JACK MA: Yes. I think this thing is going to be huge, by honestly I do not know after 15 years that would grow that fast. And I work for myself for three years and compete with China Telecom, the SOE, State Owned Enterprise. And then the startup failed, and then joined Government for 14 months and then started Alibaba. Till today, I think what we want to do with the business is that when I was entrepreneur, small tiny business, nobody helped us. So when we grow we say, well, China needs a lot of jobs, China needs a lot of small-and-medium sized companies. China needs a lot of entrepreneurs. And what's the best way to help them? Internet. So then we focused on helping the others. And because we helped more people and then more people helped us. Then the business really grew.

CHARLIE ROSE: You are an apostle for small business?

JACK MA: I'm a strong believer. It's my religion. Helping the small businesses. CHARLIE ROSE: It's your religion?

JACK MA: It's my religion. I think it's a great honor for us that we were born in this stage doing Internet. And we suddenly realized we can help so many people. Especially SMEs, and it's all about family, it's all about family hope and dreams. So, you know, I think I'm very honored, that it's just a great honor of this life that you can influence so many families just by using the technology.

CHARLIE ROSE: Where is Alibaba going?

JACK MA: Still focused on e-commerce, SME and the consumer market and I think we become the infrastructure of China e-commerce. You know, e-commerce in the States is a dessert, but in China it's become a main course because the infrastructure of doing business in China is so bad. The infrastructure of doing business in the States is so good. So it's very difficult for a pure e-commerce company to grow that big in the States. But in China, just like mobile phones. Ten, 15 years ago the infrastructure of Telecommunication was so bad. Then mobile phone bang in China. Today, E-commerce, same thing. So I think the best that came into this world is helping the others through making money through e-commerce.

Week 9 Business Strategy

The primary goal of General Motors in China over the coming year is clear: to diversify and renew our line of products. We intend to cover the complete customer spectrum in China and meet worldwide standards with our new local products. GM’s highlight at the Auto China 2005 is the market introduction of its latest SUV model. It marks the beginning of the process of product renewal and expansion at GM China. The new SUV model, in its long version, was especially developed for the requirements of the Chinese market.

As the buying power of Chinese household increases and the costs associated with car ownership decrease, we are observing a rise in the number of private customers. Private consumers today accounts for approximately 30% of automobile buyers in China. In the years to come, private customers will make up over half of the market. Meeting this growing private demand is a priority for GM. In this year, GM will introduce a so-called ‘Driving Fun’ campaign in China that meets the requirements of families for modern, yet affordable and reliable passenger cars.

On a foundation of seeking a win-win situation for both GM and its business partners in China, we developed a strategic roadmap comprised of five principles. These five principles govern all we do in China: first, we are committed to investing in China for the long term. Second, that commitment means we will bring state-of-the-art technology to China and establish transfer and training programs to keep the technology current. Third, GM China fosters local management, talent and know-how. Forth, we will develop both complete vehicles and components in China. Fifth, GM will help to integrate its Chinese partners into the world market. Action speaks louder than words. And we are doing more in China in the future than we ever have.

I have been asked this morning to share a few thoughts on the state of the pharmaceutical industry, and that's a pretty daunting task when you think about it. In an industry that is so fragmented, there is obviously likely to be fragmented opinion on how the industry is doing. So I’m not going to spend that much time today discussing the current state of the industry. Instead, what I’d like to do is focus on how Merck is doing. Specifically, I will describe how Merck is pursuing a growth strategy that is grounded in the belief that innovation is the key to global success.

To succeed, we need a winning strategy that will make us unique and set us apart, and one that will give us a clear competitive advantage. At Merck, we believe that a commitment to innovation is important for global success today. Innovation as a strategy can be high risk. But as a means to grow and compete in today's global economy, innovation offers, I believe, the highest return. Because Merck is a research-based pharmaceutical company, it should come as no surprise that innovation

plays a central role in our strategy for growth.

Our strategy is to discover truly innovative medicines through breakthrough research that are unique-in-class and have proven health outcomes. We focus on medicines on diseases with large patient populations worldwide, taking advantage of new knowledge about pathways of diseases, and using that new knowledge to come up with a novel drug. And we look for drugs that are highly potent and highly specific and that are oral and once-a-day --- and therefore easy to use.

9-3 Henkel

One of the many challenges facing Henkel in China is firstly to attract the best staff, and then to keep them in the company. To do this, Henkel offers incentives such as housing loans.

As important is training. Henkel has established the Henkel Jiao Tong Management Training Center in Shanghai, providing 1000 training days for managerial staff from Henkel’s joint venture partners around Asia to develop their skills in administration, sales, marketing, product development and application technology.

A cornerstone of Henkel’s policy in a multi-cultural environment is to train local staff. Generally at the beginning, they lack to some extent the education and experience to allow them to deal with the needs of a market-driven economy, therefore, training is very important.

As one of the first consumer branded companies to enter the Chinese market in the early 1990s, Henkel places much store on its acceptance in the market place. A DM 500,000 donation to help restore a part of the Great Wall had enhanced its image.

Ultimately, it is the product itself that counts most. Unlike other exporting companies, Henkel produces in the markets where they sell for the local market. Product lines are specially designed for local consumers, and an important strategy, especially in the detergent and cosmetics sector, has been to develop local brands enhanced by Henkel technology. That means the company could offer a product of higher quality and better value for money. While the strategy has helped Henkel become the biggest detergent producer in China, huge potential still exists: the per capital annual use of detergent in developed countries is 7-12 kilograms a year, while in China, it is 1-2 kilograms.

Many foreigners fly to Beijing for traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) treatment. The other day, an American patient made a long-distance phone call for a reservation with Doctor Zhang Zhizhen at Beijing Chinese Medical Hospital. Instead of using hormones, he has flown to China every three months for Chinese medical treatment. And it has worked. He kept seeing Chinese doctors for over a year. He is not alone. Some foreigners seek famous doctors for treatment, some just feel tired in their travel and want relaxation through TCM, some simply want to enjoy medical food and baths, and some come all the way here just to see how people are treated with TCM. In their eyes, TCM, like massage and cupping, are very mysterious and graceful. Their diseases are varied, like tumors, heart disease, insomnia and obesity. Their understanding of TCM also differs: Japanese believe in massage, Europeans favor acupuncture, Americans like cupping. Some experienced doctors find the time before and after Christmas is the peak season for treatment, because during the holiday the foreign patients can travel to China to see a doctor. The foreigners’ devotion is beyond TCM doctors’ expectation. A Cameroonian patient called TCM “bitter coffee”, and recommended it to his countrymen as a sort of enjoyment. A psoriasis patient from France, when being given by the doctor some tips on diet, carefully noted down every word of the instruction. These examples can show how much fascination TCM has.

I said this morning that today would be an opportunity for our nations, both individually and collectively, to make concrete commitments and take tangible steps to secure nuclear materials so they never fall into the hands of terrorists who would surely use them. 2. This evening, I can report that we have seized this opportunity, and because of the steps we’ve taken--as individual nations and as an international community--the American people will be safer and the world will be more secure. 3. I want to thank all who participated in this historic summit -- 49 leaders from every region of the world. Today’s progress was possible because these leaders came not simply to talk, but to take action; not simply to make vague pledges of future action, but to commit to meaningful steps that they are prepared to implement right now. 4. I also want to thank my colleagues for the candor and cooperative spirit that they brought to the discussions. This was not a day of long speeches or lectures on what other nations must do. We listened to each other, with mutual respect. We recognized that while different countries face different challenges, we have a mutual interest in securing these dangerous materials. 1. In the 21st century your generation must also lead the challenge of an international financial system that has no respect for national borders. When stock markets fall in Hong Kong or Jakarta, the effects are no longer local; they are global. The vibrant growth of your own economy is tied closely, therefore, to the restoration of stability and growth in the Asia Pacific region. 2. China has steadfastly shouldered its responsibilities to the region and the world in this latest financial crisis -- helping to prevent another cycle of dangerous devaluations. We must continue to work together to counter this threat to the global financial system and to the growth and prosperity which should be embracing all of this region. 3. In each of these vital areas that I have mentioned, we can clearly accomplish so much more by walking together rather than standing apart. That is why we should work to see that the productive relationship we now enjoy blossoms into a fuller partnership in the new century. 4. If that is to happen, it is very important that we understand each other better, that we understand both our common interest and our shared aspirations and our honest differences. I believe the kind of open, direct exchange can both clarify and narrow our differences, and, more important, by allowing people to understand and debate and discuss these things can give a greater sense of confidence to our people that we can make a better future.
