More than 600 kinds of backyard birds live in the United States. Unfortunately, the number of the birds is becoming smaller and smaller every year. One of the leading reasons is the growing number of pet cats. By keeping your pet cat indoors, you can help give backyard birds and wildlife the best possible chances to live.

Of 90 million pet cats in this country, about two-thirds are allowed to go outside. It is said that these cats kill hundreds of millions of backyard birds each year, as well as billions of small backyard animals such as rabbits, squirrels, and field mice. They can also bring illness to the backyard animals, further weakening the health of the natural populations.

Allowing pet cats to go outside is not just bad for backyard birds and wildlife, it‘s also bad for the cats too. Outdoor cats can get sick very easily. They are in danger from traffic, poisons, and attacks (攻击) from other animals. In fact, outdoor cats usually don‘t live past the age of five, while indoor cats often live to be 17 or older.

Keep your pet cat inside. If you raise a young cat, it‘s your duty to let it play inside the back door.

has banned (禁止) free plastic bags at shops and supermarkets, and people have to pay for using plastic bags. The rule started on June 1. It came because our country tried to make litter less. Making super-thin (超薄) plastic bags has also been banned.

The Chinese once used about 3,000,000,000 plastic shopping bags a day, and they have caused pollution of the environment . The bags have become a main cause of plastic pollution because they are easy to break and people throw them away here and there. So the Chinese people are encouraged to bring their own bags for shopping.

What kind of shopping bag is the best to bring? Some students in Chongqing have a good idea. They make their own shopping bags. They use old clothes to make cloth bags (布袋), and send them to their parents as presents. They also ask their parents and friends to use cloth bags instead of plastic ones. They think it is their duty to protect (保护) the environment. ( )41. People in China have to _____ now.

You want to know about my staying in America, right? Well, to tell you the truth, it is really an eye-opening experience to study here.

In China, I had English classes five times a week since fifth grade. However, I didn‘t know how different textbook English could be from everyday English until I came to Hotchkiss School, Connecticut.

When I first studied English, I was told to say,‖ I am fine‖ when people say ―How are you?‖ But in the US, I found that people say, ―I am good‖ or ―I‘m tired‖.

One day, someone greeted me with ―What‘s up?‖ It made me confused. I thought for a moment and then smiled because I didn‘t know what to say.

Since then, I have discovered more and more differences between Chinese and US cultures.

To my surprise, US girls spend a lot of time in the burning sun to get a tan(晒黑). However, in China, girls try every possible way to get their skin paler, or ―whiter‖.

I was also surprised by how hardworking US students are.

In China, schoolwork is almost everything, so we study hard and that‘s it. But here, a ―good‖ student gets g ood grades, does a lot for the public and plays sports or music.

The kids here are so talented, I am starting to be sorry that I gave up playing the piano at an early age and that I have never thought about sports.

At Christmas time, we get things together and take them to the orphanage (孤儿院) not far away from us. My boys often go through their old toys and give away what they don‘t ―need‖. I always prepare some delicious food, and get together some clothes. Then we put these in a bag and take them to the orphanage.

A few years ago when my youngest son Matt was about 8 or 9 years old, we had an unforgettable experience.

That day, Matt and I took things to the orphanage. We put down everything. When we were about to leave, Matt noticed that a baseball glove he had put in the bag had fallen out. He said, ―Mom, we forgot my glove.‖ Just then he saw a poor little boy and his mom sitting on a bench (长椅) on the side of the building where the small playground was. He said, ―Mom, can we stop for a moment? I want to give it to him.‖ So I stopped my car. Matt handed the boy the glove and said, ―Here, God wanted me to give this to you.‖ The boy was so happy to get it! His mom stood up and gave Matt a big hug. Her eyes were full of tears (眼泪). She looked at us and said, ―This was the best gift he could get. All I could get him this year was a baseball.‖ When we got back in the car, Matt said to me, ―Mom, God must have made me forget the baseball glove inside, so that little boy could have it —it was meant to be!‖

A small town named Bundanoon in Australia has decided to stop the sale of bottled water(瓶装水). They say that bottled water can cause environmental problems. Too many resources(资源) are used to make bottled water. When people finish drinking the water, the bottles will be thrown away and go into dustbins. So they require local people in the town to stop buying bottled water and use tap water to drink. Visitors are encouraged to get water from water stations in the main streets, and fill the water in bottles that can be used again. The decision has been supported(支持) by all the shopkeepers in the town. Bundanoon is the world‘s first town that has got its shop selling bottled water. Probably we should follow the example.
