综合练习题(考试题型)

I. Reading Comprehension

Passage 1

I was shown into the waiting-room which as I had expected, was full. Any waiting-room---especially a dentist’s, as this was---is not the best place in the world to spend an afternoon. No matter how hard a dentist tries to make his waiting-room look pleasant, it always has an atmosphere of its own. There is that odd smell that reminds you of a hospital. A small table in the center is covered with very old and torn magazine; the curtains are faded; and the armchairs have a hollow, sunken look about them.

I took my seat and decided to pass the time watching the people around me. A little man beside me was turning over the pages of a magazine quickly and nervously. It was hard to understand what he was looking at, for every three minutes or so he would throw the magazine onto the table, seize another, and sink back into his chair. Opposite me there was a young mother who was trying to restrain her son from making a noise. The boy had obviously grown weary of waiting. He had placed an ash-tray on the floor and was making aeroplane----noises as he waved a pencil in his hand. Near him, an old man was fast asleep, and the boy’s mother was afraid that sooner or later her son would wake the gentleman up. Meanwhile, the little man next to me is singing loudly.

At last, the door opened and a nurse entered. The people looked up expectantly with a ray of hope in their eyes, then settled down again as the next lucky patient was led out of the room.

C) The people were patiently waiting for their turn.

D) The lucky ones were those who were led out of the room earlier than others.

Passage 2

In everyday usage “hot” means “having a lot of heat.” Many people think that “cold” is something completely separated from heat. But this is not true. Cold simply means “having very little heat.”

Your life depends on heat. In fact, every living thing depends on it. Without heat, every living thing would be frozen to death. All living things get their heat from the sun, which provides the conditions in which life is possible.

Since before the dawn of history, man ha s been able to make his own heat. He has been able to release the sun’s heat that is trapped in things such as wood, coal and oil. And he has been able to use this heat.

Heat has made civilization possible. With heat, man could melt metals. As man learned to use metals and fuels, industries grew. As a result, engines were invented. These are machines that change heat energy into mechanical energy. Engines can do the work of many men. Without engines industrial civilization is impossible.

Yet when the first engines were built in the 17th century, men were still wondering about the nature of heat. “What is it?” they asked. Not until the early years of the 19th century did they find the right answer.

Part II. Reading Comprehension(20 points)

Directions: In this part there are two passages. Each passage is followed with five suggested questions. Choose the one that you think is the best.

Passage 1

Some people argue that the pressures on international sportsmen and sportswomen kill the essence of sport—the pursuit of personal excellence. Children kick a football around for fun. When they get older and play for local school teams, they become competitive but they still enjoy playing. The individual representing his country cannot afford to think about enjoying himself; he has to think only about winning. He is responsible for an entire nation’s hopes, dreams and reputatio n.

A good example is the football World Cup. Football is the world’s most important sport. It is even more important now that the United States is seriously taking it up. Winning the World Cup is perhaps the summit of international sporting success. Mentio n “Argentina” to someone and the changes are that he’ll think of football. In a sense, winning the World Cup “put Argentina on the map”.

Sports fans and supporters get quite irrational about the World Cup. People in England felt that their country was somehow important after they won in 1966. Last year thousands of Scots sold their cars, and even their houses, and spent all their money traveling to Argentina, where the finals were played.

So, am I arguing that international competition kills the idea of sport? Certainly not! Do the Argentinians really believe that because eleven of their men proved the most skillful at football, their nation is in every way better than all others? Not really. But it’s nice to know that you win, and that in one way at least y our country is best.

31. What is the author’s main purpose in the passage?

A. To prove that football is the world’s most important sport.

B. To show that Argentina is better than all others.

C. To compare Scotland with Argentina.

D. To explain the role of sport.

32. In the second paragraph, the word “summit” means .

A. highest point

B. mountain top

C. award

D. summary

33. According to the passage, Argentina is world-famous because of its .

A. large number of sports fans and supporters

B. successes in the football World Cup

C. obvious position on the map

D. excellence at all important sports

34. According to the passage, if a sportsman only thinks about winning, he will .

A. fail to succeed

B. be successful

C. lose enjoyment

D. be irrational

35. What is author’s attitude towards international games?

A) Nations that meet on a football field are unlikely to meet on a battlefield.

B) Nations that win the football World Cup are regarded as best in all aspects

C) Nations that win in international games prove best on the sports field at least.

D) Nations that give much attention to international competitions are world-famous in many ways.

Passage 2

Life really should be one long journey of joy for children born with a world of wealth at their feet.

Internationally famous child doctor Robert Coles is the world’s top expert on the influence of money on children. He has written a well-known book on the subject, “The Privileged Ones,” and his research shows that too much money in the family can cause as many problems as too little. “Obviously there are certain advantages to being rich,” says the 53-year-old doctor, “such as better health, education and future work prospects. But most important is the quality of family life. Money can’t buy love.”

It can buy a lot of other things, however; and that’s where the trouble starts. Rich kids have so much to choose from that they often become confused. Over-indulgence by their parents can make them spoilt. They tend to travel more than other children, from home to home and country to country, which causes feelings of restlessness.

“But privileged children do have a better sense of their positions in the world,”adds Mr. Coles, “and they are more self-assured.” The rich children inherit the property from their parents and enjoy a high income. So money will never be one of their problems. “However, they will have a sense of isolation,” warns Dr. Coles, “and they could suffer from the hardship of not being able to deal with the everyday world because they will never really be given the chance. Everything they have achieved is because of an accident of birth. There can be no tremendous inner satisfaction about that.”

Today’s wealthy parents perhaps realize their riches can be more of a heavy load than a happiness to their children. So the first thing for them to consider is to ensure that their families are as rich in love as they are in money.

36. In his book “The Privileged Ones”, Dr. Coles implies that .

B. rich children live a life of separation from the world

C. rich children usually enjoy more love than poor children

D. the quality of rich children’s family life may not be high

37. In the doctor’s view, .

A. there are both advantages and disadvantages into being rich

B. traveling a lot will be beneficial to children

C. rich children usually have little confidence in themselves

D. rich kids are often short of money because of their life of luxury

38. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage? .

A. Rich children usually lead a life of happiness.

B. Rich children have earned what they have.

C. Rich children tend to feel isolated.

D. Rich children are hardly given too many material things.

39. According to the author of the passage, .

A. life is really a long journey of joy for rich children

B. the rich children feel greatly satisfied with the property they inherit from their parents

C. it is more important for wealthy parents to make sure that their families are rich in love as well as in money
