Many people often lose their chance to live life to the fullest because of procrastination, which means that they always delay doing something that must be done at once. Moreover, because they often put off their plans till “tomorrow”, they are less likely to achieve their goals and will give up their dreams and goals finally. As a result, we can say that procrastination is the enemy of a progressive lifestyle.

Now that we know procrastination is something bad, why do some people not take immediate action? Well, there are some things that result in procrastination. Depending on someone else rather than doing by oneself is one of the things. Whenever you wait for something to happen before you act, you make it easier to delay your goa ls and dreams until “someday”. Another cause of procrastination is that people do not value each moment in their day. Actually, it?s surprising how much you can do if you just decide to do little things with the little time you have. Also those who often procrastinate can always find a good reason for something they refuse to do at once.

If you are one of those who often delay, then it?s time for you to make a decision to act now because things happen only when we decide to act. Get down to doing something like losing weight, saving money or spending more time with family. Don?t let these things continue to be a desire for you to do “someday”, but make a decision to do it now.

Once you have made your decision, write down the plan and take action immediately. Making plans can help you think carefully about how you are going to do what you need to do. After understanding how to do what you want to do, get doing with the plan. It doesn?t matter how small the move you make is as the little things you do accumulate over time and move you to be closer to your goals. So, don?t wait until tomorrow; instead, start now! Just make use of every moment you have to do something that is helpful in realizing your dreams and goals.

Here is a challenge that will also move you to be closer to your dreams and goals if taken seriously. Make a list of ten things you have been putting off. It could be anything from getting a health examination, calling a friend or family member, to getting the car fixed and cleaning up the

Studying Abroad

Nowadays, studying abroad gains popularity in China. Many rich parents would rather send their children abroad to receive education than let them be educated in China.

As every coin has two sides, studying abroad is not an exception. There are advantages for people to attend school abroad. In the first place, he can use the foreign language in his daily life so that his ability in the second language may be greatly improved, as it is obvious that there is no better chance to improve second-language than living in the country where it is spoken. While studying in a foreign country, he will most likely meet many others from overseas and it is possible to make friends from all over the world. This is not only exciting on the social level, but could lead to important overseas contacts in his career as well. He can get familiar with the latest knowledge in science and make use of the first-rate facilities (设备) available. In this way, there is every chance that he is able to widen his horizon (眼界) and broaden his mind.

Of course, attending schools abroad may bring about a series of problems. The most serious problem is language barrier (障碍). Most of the students who go abroad don?t have enou gh skills in the language spoken there. As a result, on arriving there, they will find it difficult to understand what the teachers say. Besides, for lack of knowledge of the customs of the local people, they may constantly run into trouble in dealing with various situations.

Therefore, given an opportunity to attend a school abroad, one must consider both sides of the Advantage s

What makes people happier: money or having happy friends and neighbors? Researchers from Harvard University and the University of California, San Diego, have found an answer as part of a study.

Nicholas Christakis and James Fowler based the study on the emotional health of almost five thousand people. They used information gathered over a period of twenty years, until 2003, in the Framingham Heart Study. That study began sixty years ago in Framingham, Massachusetts, to learn more about the risks of heart attack and stroke.

The new study found that friends of happy people had a greater chance of being happy themselves. And the smaller the physical distance between friends, the larger the effect they had on each other’s happines s.

For example, a person was twenty percent more likely to feel happy if a friend living within one and a half kilometers was also happy. Having a happy neighbor who lived next door increased an individual’s chance of being happy by thirty-four percent. T he effects of friends’ happiness lasted for up to a year.

The researchers found that happiness really is contagious. Sadness also spread among friends, but not as much as happiness.

People removed by as much as three degrees of separation still had an eff ect on a person’s happiness. Three degrees of separation means the friend of a friend of a friend.

The study showed that having an extra five thousand dollars increased a person’s chances of becoming happier by about two percent. But the researchers found that the influence of a friend of a friend of a friend can be greater than that.

Another finding is that people who are married or work together do not have as much of an effect on happiness as friends do.

The findings appeared in the British Medical Journal. The National Institute on Aging in the United States helped pay for the study.

The study is described as the first to demonstrate the indirect spread of happiness. In other words, that your emotions can be affected by someone you do not directly know.

Earlier studies by the two researchers described the effects of social networks on obesity and efforts to stop smoking. The new study shows that happiness spreads through social networks

It would help deal with the problem of climate change if people ate less meat, according to a government agency.

A leaked email to a vegetarian campaign group from an Environment Agency official expresses sympathy with the environmental benefit of a vegan diet, which bans dairy products and fish. The agency also says the Department for Environment,Food and Rural Affairs(DEFRA)is considering recommending eating less meat as one of the key environmental behavior changes needed to save the planet.

It says that this change would have to be introduced“gently”because of“the risk of alienating(使疏远)the public”.

David Miliband, the Environment Secretary, has raised the issue that farm animals are blamed for producing large amounts of powerful greenhouse gas, methane, and told farmers they need to do something about it but the agency's response appears to go further than official advice.

It has provoked(引起)an immediate response from the National Farmers Union, which said the suggesti on was“simplistic”and“a cause of concern”.

The agency's official was responding to an email from the vegan group Viva, which argues that it is more efficient to use land to grow crops for direct consumption by humans rather than feeding them to dairy cows or livestock(家畜)raised for meat.

The campaign group entered a comment on the Environment Ageney's website saying:“Adopting a vegan diet reduces one person's impact on the environment even more effective than giving up their car or forgoing several plane trips a year! Why aren't you promoting this message as part of your World Environment Day campaign?”

An agency official replied:“While potential benefit of a vegan diet in terms of climate impact could be very significant, encouraging the public to take a lifestyle decision as substantial as becoming a vegan would be a request that few are likely to take up.”

You will be interested to hear that the Department for Environment,Food and Rural Affairs is working on a set of key environmental behavior changes to mitigate climate change.Consumption of animal protein has been highlighted within that work.As a result the issue may start to figure in climate change communications in the future. It will be a case of introducing gently as there is a risk of alienating the public.

“Future Environment Agency communications are unlikely to ever suggest adopting a fully vegan lifestyle, but certainly encouraging people to examine their consumption of animal protein could be a key message.”

Juliet Gellatley, director of Viva, said,“I think it is extraordinary that a government agency thinks becoming a vegetarian or a vegan could have such a positive impact on the environment yet it is not prepared to stand up and argue the case.”

A DEFRA spokesman said:“The government is not telling people to give up meat.It isn't the role of government to enforce a dietary or lifestyle change on any individual.”

The Chinese are very generous(慷慨大方的) when it comes to educating their children. Some parents send their children to the best schools or even abroad to England, the US or Australia, regardless of how much this costs. Many also want their children to take extra-curriculum activities where they either learn a musical instrument or ballet, or other classes that will give them a head start in life. The Chinese believe that the more expensive an education is, the better it is, so parents often spend unreasonable amount of money on education. Even poor couples buy a computer for their son or daughter.

However, what most parents fail to see is that the best education they can give their children is usually very cheap. Parents can see that their children's skills vary; they will usually be skilled in some areas while poor in others. What most parents fail to realize though, is that today's children lack self-respect and self-confidence.

The problem is that parents are only educating their children on how to take multiple-choice tests and how to study effectively. They are not teaching them the most important skills they need to be confident, happy and clever.

Parents can help achieve this by teaching their children practical skills like cooking, sewing and other housework.

Teaching a child to cook will improve many of the skills that he will need later in life. Cooking demands patience and time. It is an enjoyable but difficult experience. A good cook always tries to improve his cooking, so he will learn to work hard and gradually finish his job successfully. The result, a well-cooked dinner, will give a child a lot of satisfaction and confidence.

An old machine such as a broken radio or TV set that you give your child as a toy may make him curious and arouse his interest. If he will spend hours looking at it, and try to mend it; your child might become an engineer when he grows up. Such activities do more than teach a child to read a book; but rather they teach them to think, and to use their minds. This is much more important than learning by reading a book.

四、When it comes to studying, some students may have different study habits, and some ways of studying may work for one and may not for another student. However, there are certain basic rules that can prove to be effective(有效的) in studying for an exam.

Make a plan for how to develop good study habits that last long. A plan should include a schedule(时间表) on when to study. It doesn?t have to be fixed(固定) and can be changed in case something more important and unexpected comes up. Start with a weekly schedule and determine which period of the day is filled with classes. Use some of the remaining time to study. When creating(制定)the schedule, one should include laboratory activities and extracurricular(课外的) work and take care of personal things and the job if there is one.

Study when one is fully awake and energetic(精力充沛); it is recommended. Study for no less than 30 to 90minutes after a meal or two hours every day. If one is tired from work and decides to study, it may not be effective, especially if one finds the subject too difficult. It will only give stress and that night might only be forgotten in the next morning when he wakes up. For some students, they can study anywhere if they want; it could be in the library, study rooms or private rooms. A place where one can to focus attention on one?s study is recommended.

Make friends with those that are also eager to learn and pass the exam or achieve good grades. However, one has to balance(平衡)the time to spend with friends. Have and keep a healthy relationship with them.

Take down notes during the class. The hints(暗示) of some questions teachers give will come out in the exam. Sometimes they repeat the topic more than twice, so pay more attention in class. If one does not understand the topic, don?t hesitate(犹豫) to ask questions. A failure in communicating is one of the most common mistakes among students.

Rewrite notes taken from the class. It will help remember the topics that have been discussed and will give one more new ideas. For some students, they find that rewriting notes is very effective.

Take a five-minute break or go out and get some fresh air once in a while when studying. It

Here is a 2-way student exchange in action.Fred,19,spent last year in Germany with George?s family. In turn,Ge

at maybe American schools are better in training their citizens. There ought to be some morge?s son Mike spent a year in Fred?s home in America.

Fred,a lively young man, knew little German when he arrived. But after 2 months of studying, the language became easy for him.School was completely different from what he had expected and it was much harder.Students rose respectfully when the teacher entered the room. They took 14 subjects instead of 6 that were usually taken in the US.

Family life, too, was different. The father?s word was the law.All the activities were done with the family rather than individually.Fred found the food to be too simple at first. He also missed having a car.

“Back home, you pick up some friends in a car and go out to have a good time.In Germany, you walk but you soon learn to like it.”

At the same time,in America,Mike,a friendly German boy,was also forming his own ideas.“I suppose I should criticize American schools,” he says ,“It is far too easy for our level but I have to say that I like it a lot in Germany;we do nothing but study. Here we take part in many other activities.I think thiddle ground between the two.”

Because six out of every 10 accidental deaths happen to Chinese children who are playing, Shanghai Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical (SJJP), a US-based pharmaceutical giant, is working on a Safe Kids Program to prevent injuries and deaths.

Since the Safe Kids Worldwide was set up in 1987 by Johnson & Johnson in the US, it has resulted in a nearly 40 percent decline (下降) in the child death rate from accidental injuries there. Learning from the successful experience, SJJP began the Safe Kids Program in China in 1999.

A recent survey conducted by SJJP and Safe Kids Worldwide China indicates that more than half of the responding parents didn?t know how to help their children keep safe and that half of the parents didn?t know about their children?s motor skill development at different age s. The survey covered 3,359 Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou?s parents with children between infancy (幼年) and 14.

Additionally, more than 40 percent of the parents didn?t know how to help their children to prepare well for sports activities. For instance, t hey don?t know how to have their children warm up or realize the importance of a playground-check before sports activities.

To help correct the problems, SJJP and Safe Kids Worldwide China have been translating and editing safety education materials, sending them to parents free of charge, and delivering free lectures in kindergartens, schools and residential communities for the last 10 years.

Currently, a special team has been set up and traveling around 12 key cities of China to popularize child sports safety knowledge and offer free training for young parents.

Though SJJP refuses to say how much it has spent on the program, it says the number in terms of money, staff and technology, is large.

SJJP was founded by Johnson & Johnson in 1995 and specializes in manufacturing and development of non-prescription medicines (非处方药) and health care foods and products. So far, its investment has exceeded (超过) $41 million.

“Four Tigers” Ceremony of the Tu Minority

Heigouding Village, Ledu County in the west of Qinghai province is a place where many

people of the Tu minority have lived for centuries. As the little village is comparatively closed to the outside world, a custom called “Four Tigers” was created 200 years ago to protect its

inhabitants(栖息地) from sickness and bad luck.

Every year the ceremony is held on the eve of January 15th according to the Chinese lunar

calendar to frighten off ghosts and evil souls, and to pray for peace.

Normally four local villagers are selected to be the “tigers” in the ceremony. At first, they

gathered with village elders at the mountain-god temple to offer sacrifices of wine, food and

incense, and to ask the god to help the tigers. Then the tigers were adorned with herbs, candles and

two batches of incense to serve as the tiger?s ears. Two red ribbons held in their mouths represented the tiger?s tongue. The “Tigers” drank wine, knelt and kowtowed to the mountain god

before they received Hada, a kind of white silk scarf representing respects and good luck, from the

village head with firecrackers crackling.

As night fell, the candles on the tigers? bodies were lit and the tigers began their visits to one household after another. Villagers followed, shouting “Tigers are coming!” The elder from each

household welcomed the tigers at the gate, while the rest of the family knelt down in the courtyard.

Firecrackers were set off, a toast made and candies, meat and wine were presented to the villagers

following the tigers. After twirling (快速转动)in three circles in the courtyard while those present

kowtowed and prayed, the tigers went through every corner of every room to drive away any

hiding ghosts. If there was a sick person in the house, the tigers jumped around him or her,

scratched their body and said lucky words to drive away diseases and ghosts. After the ceremony, the family would present wine and food to the tigers. Then, shouting “The tigers are leaving!” the

whole family saw them off.

After visiting all 30 or 40 households, the herbs were removed from the tigers and burned, to

indicate that all the ghosts had been conquered. Then the villagers knelt and kowtowed with the

In the United States, engineering is a profession that has been dominated historically by men. Even today, it?s still true that few women become civil or chemical or mechanical engineers, but that?s some thing https://www.wendangku.net/doc/db13046848.html, aims to change. Young women who visit the web site can find out about a great career choice they might not have considered.

“Women are very much underrepresented in engineering and in engineering education programs and then of course, down the road, in the engineering workforce. So only about 20 percent of engineering undergraduate degrees go to women, and then only about nine percent of working engineers are women.”

Mary Mattis in the National Academy of Engineering says the EngineerGirl website aims to reach young women around ages 11 through 14, when they are just getting old enough to start thinking about their futures.

“We know from the research that middle-school girls are at a critical point in their lives, and that it?s a t ime when we need to reach them, both with an understanding, increasing their awareness of interesting fields in engineering, what a wonderful productive and exciting career you can have as an engineer. But we also need to reach them at that time because you have to take certain courses, and you can?t start thinking about taking those courses when you?re a junior in high school.”

Engineering is a demanding course of study — there is a lot of science and mathematics, for many girls and even boys, that can be challenging. But Ms. Mattis says that the EngineerGirl website stresses that engineering can also be fun and exciting.

“It?s about designing things. It?s about changing the world for people. It?s about making a difference. And, in addition, you can make a good living; you can be independent economically by becoming an engineer. All of those things are messages that girls need to get.”

While most engineers go into traditional fields such as mechanical and electrical engineering, the EngineerGirl site also highlights unusual engineering careers in fields such as sports engineering and — believe it or not — chocolate engineering.

“There?s a section called …why be an engineer,? and that talks about the many opportunities and increasingly different opportunities like with bio-engineering and environmental engineering, some fields that might appeal to girls who want to make a difference or have a meaning for their careers beyond earning an income.”[来源

Canada?s wealth comes from the exploitation of its rich natural resources and from the work of its citizens. Canadians are employed in a variety of jobs. All of these jobs can be grouped into one of three categories: extractive industries, manufacturing industries and service industries.

Industries that take raw materials from the natural environment are called extractive or primary industries. Canada has a wealth of natural resources. The extractive industries that have been developed to exploit these natural resources make an important contribution to the wealth of our economy. Without these extractive industries, and the money they bring from other countries, Canada?s economy could not exist in its present form. Yet only a small percentage of Canada?s labour force works in extractive industries. Extractive industries rely on labour-saving machines instead of human labour.

Manufacturing industries process the products of extractive industries into finished products Manufacturing industries transform raw materials into many different forms to be used by consumers or by other companies. This processing may be done in one or more stages. For example, iron ore is transformed into steel in factories. This is called primary manufacturing. The steel is then sent to companies for further processing into cars, mining equipment, machines, nails, and other products-such as bicycle frames. This is called secondary manufacturing.

Manufacturing industries are located in many towns and cities across Canada. Companies try to build their factories in densely populated areas because they want to near the people who buy their products. If they locate near their customers, then they save money on shipping costs. Manufacturing industries provide more jobs to Canadians than do extractive industries. Yet the number of people employed in manufacturing is still small in comparison to the third category, services. As with extractive industries, manufacturing process use many machines that require relatively few workers.

Service industries provide services needed by the extractive and manufacturing industries, and by society in general. Without these services, society could not operate. The majority of Canadian workers do not produce “goods” in their jobs. Instead, they provide “services” for others. The range of services is very great and includes such things as retailing, office work, education, health care, communications, government, transportation, and personal services.

Service industries in one form or another are spread over the entire country. In every community there are stores, banks, schools, police forces, and dozens of other services. The majority of service industries are found in town and cities because services are provided for people and there are many more people in urban areas,

Stephen Covey?s book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is very popular among business people who want to improve their careers, but its rules can be applied to any area of life. For example, Covey?s rule s can be used to improve relationships between parents and children or to improve the way you manage your time.

Covey begins by discussing habits and effectiveness, and why they are both important to success. According to Covey, for an action to become a habit, you must know what to do and why should do it. However, you also must want to do it. On the other hand, effectiveness means having a balance between success and a good relationship with the people around you. In order to be successful, you must have habits that make you able to deal effectively with others and your own personal life.

Next, Covey introduces the seven habits of highly effective

people. The first three habits focus on personal growth. The next three habits are about how to get along with others. The seventh habit shows how to achieve physical, emotional and mental health.

Covey includes exercises to help you analyse your life. He challenges you to decide what you want to contribute to society in your lifetime. He does this by asking you to think about what people to say about you after you die. Your answer to this question will help you make better decisions about how to spend your time. In this way, you can challenge yourself to make your dreams and ambitions come true.

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People has the potential to really improve your life.

Do you obey the rules in your school? How do you like your school rules? A lot of school rules are similar around the world, but some are different. Every school has their own rules. There are some rules in Japanese schools. The students are not allowed to dye(染) their hair and should keep the hair Japanese black colour. They are not allowed to wear earrings, either. Almost all schools required students to wear uniforms in the past but now half of the schools require uniforms. In Japan, students are not allowed to have part-time jobs because they may not concentrate on their study. American schools have their own rules. For example, in Morton High School, students are not allowed to choose their own clothes. They must get to school and leave school on time. They must wear sports shoes in gym class. They should keep quiet in the school bus. In America, the students can have part- time jobs in their free time. (1)Why are the students not allowed to have part time jobs in Japan?

Decoding the young brain There was a funny experiment to see how a young child would answer a specific question compared to an adult. After the adult had spent some time speaking with the child, he asked the child, “What do you think about me?” The child answered, “You talk too much.” When the adult performed the same experiment with another adult, the reply to the same question was, “I think you're a very interesting person.” Even if the adult f elt the same way as the child, his brain allowed him to take a moment, consider the question, and come up with an answer. He could have been annoyed, but his answer didn't reflect it because he was being polite. The secret lies in the science of the developing brain. The child's honest answer was reflected in the fact that his brain wasn't equipped to filter(过滤) information before answering the question. As a result, he was honest, but he said something that may have been hurtful. However, the child did not intentionally hurt the adult; it's just the way his brain works. As a child grows into adolescence and then into adulthood, that changes. The human brain is made up of billions of neurons(神经元). In order for our body to execute a command, like getting up from a chair and walking to the other room, the neurons in the brain have to communicate with each other. They also help us employ our senses like taste and touch and help us remember things. When the neurons send messages, perhaps one sensation(感觉) the person feels is excitement about eating a cookie because it is so delicious. Later, if that person smells a cookie or hears someone talking about a cookie, it can spark the electrical signals that call up the memory of eating the delicious cookie. In an adult, he or she may remember that eating too many cookies can have consequences, like weight gain. But because the younger brain is more impulsive(冲动的), the desire to feel the pleasure of the sweet treat outweighs the consequences. That is becau se when a child is young, his brain is “wired” in such a way that he seeks pleasure and is more willing to take risks than an adult. This affects his decision-making process and it is why younger people tend to be more impulsive. Sometimes parents have to tell their children over and over again before the child remembers that something is dangerous or risky. How many times have we heard a parent say, “I tell her this all the time, but she never listens!” To conclude, what we know about the young brain is that children are more likely than adults to be impulsive. It isn't always necessarily because they are being naughty; it may very well be because of their brains. So the next time you ask a child what he really thinks of you, be prepared for any kind of answer.

一般疑问句由Yes 或 No 来回答,而特殊疑问句由疑问词what,who,where,why,when,which 和how 引出,回答时需完成疑问词所指的对象。 比如“Is he a teacher or a student? ”答案是“He is a teacher.”或“ He is a student.”
