I log onto a computer at the doctor's office to say I have arrived and then wait until a voice calls me into the examination room.

There, a robotic nurse directs me onto a device and then takes my blood pressure. Some time later, in steps the doctor, who is also a robot. He notes down my symptoms and gives me a prescription (处方). I pay for my visit using a credit card machine and return home without having met another human being.

When I call my dentist's office and actually get a human being on the line, I am thrilled. And when I see the introduction of yet more self-service checkout stations at the grocery store, I feel like shouting,“When it comes to cashiers, make mine human, please!”

After all, human cashiers sometimes give you a store coupon(优惠券) for items you are buying. Even more than that, real-life cashiers often take an interest in particularly cute children, which can brighten a young mother's day. A cashier may also show compassion (同情) for an elderly person struggling to get that last penny out of her purse.

What technological device would do, any of this? I don't want to go back to the Stone Age, but I'm also worried about a world run by machines. Sometimes when you're chatting with someone, you discover things you need to know. Maybe a receptionist needs prayers said for a sick child. Maybe a salesperson can offer a bit of encouragement to a customer who is feeling tired.

Machines can be efficient and cost-effective and they often get the job done just fine. But they lack an element so important to everyday life.

Call it the spirit, the soul or the heart. It is something no machine will ever have. It is being human that prompts us to smile at others, which may be what they need at that moment.

1.What's the author's purpose in writing the first two paragraphs?

A.To indicate high technology can make our future life very easy.

B.To describe a possible future scene where robots take control of our life.

C.To warn readers of the possible dangers of robotic nurses and doctors.

D.To predict how technology can affect the way we see a doctor in the future.

2.Why does the author prefer being served by humans rather than by robots?

A.Robots are indifferent and emotionless.

B.Robots can't provide efficient services.

C.Robots don't offer to give store coupons.

D.Robots are unable to do a job as well as humans.

3.What's the author's attitude toward machines?

A.He wishes one day they would come to life.

B.He is absolutely against their existence in his life.

C.He doesn't like they get involved in his life too much.

D.He is afraid they would take the place of human beings.

Machines can be efficient and cost-effective and they often get the job done just fine.B ut they lack an element so important to everyday life.

The ancient Mayan civilization collapsed due to a century-long drought, a new research suggests.

Minerals taken from Belize's famous underwater cave, known as the Blue Hole, as well as lagoons(环礁湖)nearby, show that an extreme drought occurred between A.

D. 800 and A.D. 1000, right when the Mayan civilization ended. After the rains returned, the Mayans moved north—but they disappeared again a few centuries later, and that disappearance occurred at the same time as another dry period, the sediments(沉积物) reveal.

Although the findings aren't the first to tie a drought to the end of the Mayan culture, the new results strengthen the case that dry periods were indeed the cause. That's because the data came from several spots in a region central to the Mayan heartland, said study co-author Andre Droxler, an Earth scientist at Rice University.

From A. D. 300 to A. D. 700, the Mayan civilization flourished in the Yucatan Peninsula. These ancient Mesoamericans built great pyramids, mastered astronomy, and developed both a writing system and a calendar system, which is famous for predicting that the world would end in 2012.

But in the centuries after A.D. 700, the civilization's building activities slowed and the culture fell into war and unrest.

The evidence for a drought has been growing in recent years. A 2012 study in the journal Science analyzed a 2,000-year-old stalagmite(石笋)from a cave in southern Belize and found that sharp decreases in rainfall coincided with periods of decline in the culture. But the data came from just one cave, which meant it was difficult to make predictions for the area as a whole, Droxler said.

To look for signs of a drought, the team drilled the sediments in the Blue Hole of Lighthouse Lagoon. The lagoons are surrounded on all sides by thick walls of coral reefs. During storms or wetter periods, excess water runs off from rivers and streams, overtops the retaining walls, and is deposited in a thin layer at the top of the lagoon. From there, all the sediments from these streams settle to the bottom of

the lagoon, piling on top of each other and leaving a record of the historical climate.

The team found that during the period between A.D. 800 and A.D. 1000, when the Mayan civilization collapsed, there were just one or two tropical cyclones (气旋) every two decades, as opposed to the usual five or six. After that, the Mayans moved north, building at sites such as Chichen Itza, in what is now Mexico.

7.What happened after an extreme drought between A.D. 800 and A.D. 1000?

A.The Mayans were suffering a heavy flood.

B.The Mayans suddenly disappeared from the Earth.

C.The Mayans were often attacked by tropical cyclones.

D.The Mayans moved to places that is now called Mexico.

8.What is the main idea of Paragraph 4?

A.The achievements of the Mayan civilization.

B.The prediction the Mayan civilization made.

C.The effects the Mayan civilization had on humans.

D.The background where the Mayan civilization began.

9.Why did the team drill the sediments in the Blue Hole of Lighthouse Lagoon?

A.To learn how the Blue Hole came into being.

B.To know what lies on the bottom of the lagoon.

C.To study the record of the historical climate.

D.To see how excess water runs off from rivers and streams.

10.What did Andre Droxler think of the analysis of the 2,000-year-old stalagmite?

A.Amazing. B.Ridiculous.

C.Reasonable. D.Unreliable.

根据文章最后一段的最后一句话“After that, the Mayans moved north, building at sites such as Chichen Itza,in what is now Mexico”可知,答案为D项。

8.解析:选A。

根据文章第七段的第一句话“To look for signs of a drought, the team drilled the sediments in the Blue Hole o f Lighthouse Lagoon.”

和最后一句中的“leaving a record of the historical climate”可知,这个团队这样做是为了研究历史气候的记录。

根据文章第六段的最后一句话“But the data came from just one cave, which meant it was difficult to make predictions for the area as a whole,Droxler said.”

(2019·四川成都诊断)My wife and I, recently driving through Arizona, stopped at a “collector's shop” in Tucson, where stones and minerals of many kinds were on display. During the visit, we were taken into a small room w here ordinary-looking rocks were laid out on shelves. Had I seen them on some hillside, I would not have given them a second thought. Then the man closed the door so that the room was in total darkness and turned on an ultraviolet (紫外线的) lamp. Instantly, the rocks leaped into a kind of glory. Brilliant colors of an indescribable beauty were there before our eyes: a certain power had been switched on, and a hidden world leaped into life.

As I look at my universe and walk among my fellow humans, I have the deep belief that hidden realities are all around us: there in the physical world, and there also in the human world.

I believe, then, that my chief job in life is to switch on an extra power so that I can see what my naked eyes, or my naked mind, cannot now see. I believe that I have to do this particularly with my human fellows. My ordinary eyes tend to stop short at those envelopes we call human bodies. But we have learned that by turning on a certain power we can see through to the inside of these envelopes.

We call this extra power “imagination”. At its highest, we call it “empathy”,the power to see through and to feel through to the inner life of other human beings. When we turn on this lamp of imaginative sensitivity, we make the ordinary human beings around us come excitingly alive.

When we are aware that there are glories of life still hidden from us, we walk humbly (谦逊地) before the Great Unknown. But we do more than this: we try to increase our powers of seeing and feeling so that we can turn what is still unknown into what is warmly and understandingly known. This, I believe, is our great human adventure.

11.Why does the writer mention their visit to the collector's shop?

A.To introduce the topic.

B.To share his experience.

C.To explain his point.

D.To provide evidence.

12.Which of the following does the writer agree with?

A.Hidden realities remain in the physical world.

B.Ordinary minds can never reach others' inside.

C.He had seen the very rocks on some hillside before.

D.We should stay humble when we are still unknown.

13.It can be referred to as a great human adventure that ________.

A.we walk humbly before the Great Unknown

B.our eyes stop short at ordinary human beings

C.we try hard to discover the hidden glories of life

D.we are aware of the truth of hidden realities

11.解析:选A。 故选A项。

12.解析:选A。 I have the deep belief that hidden realities are all around us可知,隐藏的事实到处都是,存在于我们的物质生活中;根据文章第三段最后两句可知B项表述不准确;文章第一段第三句Had I seen them on some hillside,I would not have given them a second thought.使用了虚拟语气,可知C项表述与文中内容不符;根据文章第五段第一、二句可知,作者的观点是we do more than this(walk humbly),故D项不符。

When we are aware that there are glories of life still hidden from us,we walk humbly before the Great Unknown. But we do more than this:we try to increase our powers of seeing and feeling so that we can turn what is still unknown into what is warmly and understandingly known.

(2019·安徽六校素质测试)Most students have experienced or suffered from procrastination(拖延症). Here are some tips to help you reduce procrastination.

Set goals

Students often procrastinate because they think that they can put off the work for a while and enjoy their time at the moment.____1____, when the deadline becomes one day away and the essay has yet to be started. In order to stay on track, you should constantly set and update goals. It can be beneficial to mark all deadlines in a planner and think about how much time you need to meet them all. Update your plan for the upcoming two weeks so that you do not get overwhelmed, and continue to update as other assignments and events arise. Additionally, make a daily schedule in order to reach necessary goals before going to bed.

Reward yourself

It can become extremely difficult to work for hours straight in order to finish schoolwork. In order to keep productivity, set breaks at the end of a period of time or once you finish a section of your work so that you can reward yourself with some deserved,sc heduled, and controlled procrastination-like activities.____2____. Breaks like these are proven to increase productivity and keep you focused, and they will make the process of studying much more bearable!

Remind yourself of what you're doing

Sometimes you may begin to think that what you are working on has little to do with what you ultimately want to do. You may consider some work or a class pointless and not useful to your further studies. However, when these thoughts arise, remind yourself what the ultimate goal of your schooling is. Remind yourself why you wanted to go to school and take this program in the first place.____3____.

Turn off the Internet

4____. If you do not need the Internet to do your work, turn it off so that you are not receiving notifications while completing your work, and you are not so tempted to search for sites. The same goes for your cell phone; you can take a break from being connected to the cyber world in order to do your schoolwork. If you feel the need to check messages and websites often, set time when you will allow yourself to do so rather than constantly staying connected.

5____

Being productive for all hours of every day does not work—you do need breaks, and as a student you are entitled to have a lot of fun. So, in order to balance

productivity and amusement, plan time to go out with friends or do something relaxing. But ideally, social and relaxation plans should be made after a significant portion of work is complete. This way, while you are working, you can keep in mind that once you have finished your work you can go out and not worry about your assignments.

A.Enjoy every minute in school

B.Have something to look forward to

C.The Internet has become an essential part of our daily life

D.You may understand why you should focus on completing your work

E.This thought tends to make things worse, though

F.Some of the most common distractions are those found on the Internet

G.You may have coffee with a friend, cook, or watch a television show
