At the thought of this, sweat oozes from my forehead and tears trickle down my cheeks. Already sweat is starting on my forehead, and tears welling up in my eyes.

Why should I be made to pass through this world for nothing? It is not fair though: why should I have made such a trip for nothing!

I. if II. but if表示一种假设,不够客观;而but的使用,没有这种意思,客观性强

I. but my quota of them is undoubtedly wearing away II . but I do feel my hands are getting empty I wearing away表达了时间已无可挽回地流逝了,特别是用 “undoubtedly”译“确乎”比一般人所认为的“indeed, really”更恰当妥帖;而II所用的词语貌似忠实于原文,实际上仅有语言形式的对应,而非思想内涵的等值,所以译文未能达意。
