I don’t hear from Grandma often because she doesn’t have email or even a cell phone.I send text messages to stay in touch with my friends, but not to Grandma. I have my ownweb p age and blog, but Grandma doesn’t even have a computer.

Her letter was four pages long. It was beautifully handwritten and full of details fromher daily life. She wrote about her new flowers she put in her garden, her weekly cardgames with friends, and how she took her cat Mimi to the vet. She asked me about my newjob and wondered if I would have time to visit her.

For some reason, all of this moved me deeply. I imagined her in her kitchen at thetable, taking time with paper and pen, addressing the envelope and buying a stamp. Itmade me feel that my life is moving too fast. I spend so much time looking at computer screens, video games, instant messages… I t’s a beautiful thing to sit quietly and write aletter to someone that’s on your mind.

I sent her a card -handwritten - and told her that I’ll visit her next week. I’d like tosit in the kitchen with her, and maybe work in the garden together. Her letter reminded me that being fast isn’t always a good thing, and th at being online doesn’t always meanthat you are connected.

the Earth”.

Headmaster: Well, this year environmental problems are part of our science studies. Mrs. Gray: Science is OK, but Tom now says that it’s wrong to drive cars and useelectricity, He’s afraid we’re damaging the planet every time we get in

the car. He can’t stop worrying.

Headmaster:Hmm. Well, that…does seem extreme.

Mrs. Gray: He used his own money to buy an energy-saving desk lamp! He didn’t evenask my permission!

Headmaster: Well, the desk lamp seems like a good idea.

Mrs. Gray: It's nonsense! He keeps saying, “I have to fight for change!”But he’s only

7 years old!

Headmaster: I don’t think that environmental problems are nonsense.

Mrs. Gray: Scaring children and turning them against their parents is not a teacher’s

job.The world has lots of problems -- war and crime and

WOMAN: Yes, of course. Can I take your name? MAN: It's Peter Chin. WOMAN: Okay Peter. Well, if you want to ask about the job and then if we're both still interested, we could arrange for you to come for an interview. MAN: Great, thanks. I'm afraid I missed the advert for the job but heard about it from a friend. WOMAN: That's no problem at all. What would you like to know? MAN: Well, um, what sort of work is it - washing up? WOMAN: It's answering the phone. MAN: Oh right, fine. WOMAN: And not waiting at table. MAN: That'd be good. And how many nights a week would it be? WOMAN: Well, we're really only busy at the weekend. MAN: So two nights? WOMAN: Three actually, so it would work out at twelve hours a week. MAN: That'd be fine. It wouldn't interfere with my studies. WOMAN: Are you at the university? MAN: Yes. First year Physics student. WOMAN: Oh, right. MAN: Um, and because I'm not an EU national would I need a work permit? WOMAN: Yes you would. Just get your tutor to sign it. MAN: I don't know that. How do you spell it please? WOMAN: It's H-I-double L-S-D-U-double N-E Road. MAN: Got that. Thanks. Is it near a bus stop? WOMAN: Yes. The nearest one would probably be just beside the Library. MAN: Oh yes, I know it. That'd be fine for me. And could I ask about the pay? WOMAN: We're offering £4.45 an hour. MAN: That's very good. My last job was £3.95 an hour. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WOMAN: We feel it's pretty good and we also offer some good fringe benefits MAN: Really? WOMAN: Well, we give you a free dinner, so you eat well. MAN: Right, better than hostel food! WOMAN: We certainly hope so! And we also offer extra pay for working on national holidays. MAN: Oh, that's a really good perk, isn't it? WOMAN: Yes, we think so. And then because of the difficulties of getting public transport, if you're working after 11 o'clock we drive you home. MAN: Oh, that's good to know. WOMAN: Well, we'd certainly be interested in inviting you for an interview, if you're still interested? WOMAN: Oh yes, certainly. Could I just also ask what qualities you're looking for? WOMAN: Well, for this particular job we want a clear voice, which you obviously do have! MAN: Thanks. WOMAN: And you must be able to think quickly, you know. MAN: Well, I hope I'd ... WOMAN: So, when could you come in for an interview? We're actually quite quiet tonight? 听力文本: PC Recycler Strikes Gold in Old Computer Chips This is the VOA Special English Technology Report. Each year, Americans throw away millions of tons of electronic devices. That means business is good for a small electronics recycler in Chantilly, Virginia. Company President Jeremy Faber established PC Recycler. He spoke to us from the floor of his company's processing center. Workers were busy taking apart televisions, cell phones and computers -- anything electronic. Jeremy Faber says the flow of discarded electronics is only increasing. JEREMY FABER: "Electronics recycling is the fastest growing waste stream in the United States right now." Recycling electronic waste is not a single job. Newer devices can be rebuilt and resold. Breaking down electronics into small parts for refiners to melt and purify is another part. Operations Manager Andrew Portare says computer circuit boards are rich resources. ANDREW PORTARE: "Boards have the highest scrap value in them so you can actually see on the back you're looking at different types of metals. This one is a really good example. Some of the older ones are mainly all gold." Gold now sells for more than one thousand three hundred dollars an ounce. Twenty-five percent of PC Recycler's sales come from selling parts to refiners. Refining companies pay more than ten dollars a kilogram for computer boards. PC Recycler can also lift profits by holding metal-rich parts until prices rise. ANDREW PORTARE: "If copper's up one day, we can ship all of our copper extract and capitalize on the market." Computers also hold private or secret information. And securing that data is the fastest growing part of the recycling business. Completely removing data from a computer hard drive is not easy. PC Recycler can remove data magnetically or completely destroy and recycle the drives. Discarding waste in a way that meets government environmental protection rules is also important. Old TVs can contain over a kilogram of lead as well as cadmium --
