Where does bungee jumping come from? It comes from the adult ceremony in a South Pacific island. Many countries have ceremonies to celebrate their young people becoming adults. Because you have to prove you are that age and not a kid.

Suzie: I think there is something crazy about American laws for when young people can do things. So I can vote at 18 and drive at 16. So you would think that 18 is grown-up, even if 16 isn’t. But then I can’t drink alcohol until I’m 21! If I’m already an adult at 18, how can people stop me from buying a can of beer in a shop?

I was coming downstairs to get breakfast when the post came. I was waiting for a letter from my friend Sam, so I picked the letters up and looked through them. I wasn’t surprised to see that there were so me bills. There wasn’t an invitation to a party. There wasn’t a letter form Sam. There was a postcard, showing some cliffs and the sea. What a nice view!

I turned the postcard over. It wasn’t easy to read. Rain and made the writing unclear, including the name of the person who had sent the postcard. Who was it from? I tried to read any of the words. Just then the telephone rang. It was Sam! “I’m calling to see if you got my postcard,” he said. “We are at the seaside, not in London. We changed our minds. Mum and D ad are resting after our walk. So I’m ringing you. I’m sorry I didn’t write a letter. We’ve been so busy.”

THE HIGH JUMP IN THE 1936 OLYMPICS

One news story about the modern Olympics is about men pretending to be women to enter the women’s events. People are arguing about how fair it is to test women athletes to make sure they are not men. One side argues that men a re stronger, so will win any women’s event. They say that athletes are tested to make sure they are not using drugs to win and more importantly, women should be tested to make sure they are not men. The other side argues that this is unfair to women. They say skill is more important than strength. But has this ever really happened? The answer is yes, several times! The most famous case is that of Dora in the 1936 Olympics Games.

The Olympics were held in Berlin, Germany, three years after the Nazis came to power. The Nazis wanted to win lots of events at the Olympics. But they had wrong ideas about race. They did not want black or Jewish people in the German team. But many of their best athletes were Jewish. The Nazis did not let these athletes compete. But that meant they might lose events! One event that the Nazis thought they might lose was the women’s high jump. So the Nazis sent a male athlete, Hermann Ratjen, to compete under the name of “Dora”.

Did he win? No. Dora came fourth. The winner was a young Jewish woman from Hungary. She jumped 1.60metres. Dora only jumped 1.58metres. So men do not always win!
