The unusual ability of blind people to “sense” unseen objects has been demonstrated for the first time in sighted volunteers whose vision was blanked out by scientists.

The findings suggest “blindsight”, which has been observed in blind people whose eyes function normally but wh o have suffered damage to the brain’s visual centre, is a real and not imagined phenomenon.

In the tests, the blind have been able to distinguish basic shapes of objects they cannot see, as well as their orientation (定向) and direction of motion. On other occasions a blind person has reported experiencing a “feeling” that an object is present, while not being able to see it.

A number of theories have been proposed to ex plain “blindsight”. Generally, it is suggested that other parts of the brain besides the primary visual cortex (皮层) respond to nerve messages from the eyes at an unconscious level.

Scientists from the University of Houston in Texas temporarily blinded a group of 12 volunteers by using an electromagnetic field to shut down the primary visual cortex. Images were then flashed in front of them on a screen.

In one experiment, volunteers were shown either a horizontal (水平的) or vertical bar. In another, a red or green dot appeared.

Most of the time, the volunteers were unaware of the images with which they were presented. But they guessed either the orientation of the bar or the color of the dot correctly more often than would have been expected by the law of averages.

The researchers said the findings suggested that a visual pathway bypassing the primary visual

cortex must be responsible for “blindsight”.

59. From the passage we can learn that the primary visual cortex in the brain ______.

A. can be replaced by other parts of the brain

B. works together with other parts of the brain

C. is the only part to react to messages from the eyes

D. is not the only part to react to messages from the eyes

60. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

A. “Blindsight” exists in any blind person.

B. The volunteers in the tests are blind people.

C. The blind may have different experiences in sensing objects.

D. The volunteers in the tests could see everything presented to them.

61. In this passage, the author explains ______.

A. why “blindsight” is needed

B. how “blindsight” possibly occurs

C. how the primary visual cortex works

D. why the primary visual cortex is important

C

“Without the fog, London wouldn’t be a beautiful city,” the French painter Claude Monet wrote to his wife, Alice, during one of his long visits to England from France. Few Londoners would have agreed with his statement at the time, when the city was choked by the smog of the Industrial Revolution, but no one argues with the beauty of the colorful skies he began painting there between 1899 and 1901. Pollution has never looked quite as attractive as when seen through Monet’s eyes.

Now there is evidence that Monet’s images of London were not only Impressionist crea tions, but a result of highly accurate observation. According to a paper published by two environmental scientists, the paintings may “provide useful information in the analysis of the London fogs and air quality during this period”—a period before pollution levels were routinely recorded.

In their study, Jacob Baker and John E. Thomas of the University of Birmingham analyzed the position of the sun in 9 of the 19 paintings in Monet’s “House of Parliament” series. There was “a perfect correlation”, Thomas s ays, between the solar positions in the images, the actual solar positions from astronomical records and the dates on which Monet began the works. “We believe,” Thomas says, “that we can basically work out how much smoke would have to be in the air to crea te that visibility and those colors in, say, February 1900 through the images.”

Some art historians doubt the London paintings hold this much documentary evidence, pointing out the Monet continued to work on many of the images after he returned to his studio in Giverny, France. They also argue that there’s no question that Monet was astonishingly realistic to what lay in front of him, but at the same time, for example, he had a penchant for pinks. He always was trying to put pinks into pictures throughout his career.

Thomas admits that “it’s still just a hypothesis (假设)” but maintains that “we’re fairly optimistic that we’ll get something out of it.”

62. The underlined word “penchant” in the fourth paragraph may mean .

A. unnatural hatred

B. strong liking

C. deep understanding

D. wide use

63. We may infer from the passage that .

A. modern people have known what caused the fog in London through early record

B. most painters were attracted and inspired by the fog of London

C. many citizens were once proud of their mysterious and beautiful foggy air

D. London used to suffer a lot from the Industrial Revolution

64. About Monet’s paintings, which of the following statements is true?

A. They are not so popular and attractive today because too many still exist.

B. They are full of the painters’ imagination rather than realistic drawings.

C. Many of the paintings by Monet are colored pink.

D. They have recorded the London fogs and air quality by the painter routinely.

65. According to the passage, the study of Jacob Baker and John E. Thomas has .

A. been questioned by some art historians

B. found the answer to what contributed to the foggy air in London

C. yielded enough and persuasive evidence to carry out more research

D. attracted great attention from many scientists

D

When Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg launched https://www.wendangku.net/doc/dd16723761.html, in Feb. 2004, even he could not imagine the forces it would let loose. His intent was to connect college students. Facebook, which is what this website rapidly evolved into, ended up connecting the world.

To the children of this connected era, the world is one giant social network. They are not bound — as were previous generations of humans — by what they were taught. They are only limited by their curiosity and ambition. During my childhood, all knowledge was local. You learned everything you knew from your parents, teachers, preachers, and friends.

With the high-quality and timely information at their fingertips, today’s children are rising normally tame middle class is speaking up against social ills. Silicon Valley executives are being shamed into adding women to their boards. Political leaders are marshalling the energy of millions for elections and political causes. All of this is being done with social media technologies that Facebook and its competitors set free.

As does every advancing technology, social media has created many new problems. It is commonly addictive and creates risks for younger users. Social media is used by extremists in the Middle East and elsewhere to seek and brainwash recruits (新成员). And it exposes us and our friends to disagreeable spying. We may leave our lights on in the house when we are on vacation, but through social media we tell criminals exactly where we are, when we plan to return home, and how to blackmail (敲诈) us.

Governments don’t need informers any more. Social media allows government agencies to spy on their own citizens. We record our thoughts, emotions, likes and dislikes on Facebook; we share our political views, social preferences, and plans. We post intimate photographs of ourselves. No spy agency or criminal organization could actively gather the type of data that we voluntarily post for them.

The marketers are also seeing big opportunities. Amazon is trying to predict what we will order. Google is trying to judge our needs and wants based on our social-media profiles. We need to be aware of the risks and keep working to alleviate the dangers.

Regardless of what social media people use, one thing is certain: we are in a period of accelerating change. The next decade will be even more amazing and unpredictable than the last. Just as no one could predict what would happen with social media in the last decade, no one can accurately predict where this technology will take us. I am optimistic, however, that a connected humanity will find a way to uplift itself.

66. What was the purpose of Facebook when it was first created?

A. To help students connect with the outside world.

B. To bring university students into closer contact.

C. To help students learn to live in a connected era.

D. To combine the world into an integral whole.

67. What difference does social media make to learning?

A. Local knowledge and global knowledge will merge.

B. Student will become more curious and ambitious.

C. People are able to learn wherever they travel.

D. Sources of information are greatly expanded.

68. What is the author’s greatest concern with social media technology?

A. Individuals and organizations may use it for evil purposes.

B. Government will find it hard to protect classified information.

C. People may disclose their friends’ information unintentionally.

D. People’s attention will be easily distracted from their work in hand.

69. What do businesses use social media for?

A. Creating a good corporate image.

B. Conducting large-scale market surveys.

C. Anticipating the needs of customers.

D. Minimizing possible risks and dangers.

70. What does the author think of social media as a whole?

A. It will enable human society to advance at a faster pace.

B. It will pose a grave threat to our traditional ways of life.

C. It is bound to bring about another information revolution.

D. It breaks down the final barriers in human communication.

Talking to friends on WeChat, Wang Chenchen’s mood changes according to her friends’ replies. Long sentences are always heartwarming and happy emoticons in dicate the other person’s good spirits. But one word replies like “OK”, “Oh” or “hehe” quickly kill the mood.

Over-reliance on online communication is causing division between people and social anxiety in this digital era. With social media bringing people closer together than ever before, a new set of online language norms also appears.

Connected or separated

Wang Chenchen, 20, an English major at the University of International Business and Economics says, “I tend to judge my friends by the quali ty and speed with which they comment on my updates on Weibo or WeChat.”

But to Chen Jie, 21, a biological engineering major at Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wang’s evaluation system is problematic. “Everyone has their lifestyle and a c ertain way of using social media,” says Chen, who is always busy working in the laboratory and hardly has time for social media.

Ge Yan, a professor of communication at Shanghai Jiaotong University, says social media is causing fragmentation (碎片化) of communication. “People tend to judge their surroundings by the information available,” says Ge. “They also evaluate their friendships and others’ lifestyles based on

fragmented pieces of information with which they construct a so-called reality.”

Need for emotion

According to Ge, such superficial communication helps encourage more interaction between people, but in terms of building solid interpersonal relationships it causes more harm than good. An online survey on Sina Weibo last month shows, “hehe” was the top conversation killer in 2013. “The words people hate all have one thing in common —a lack of emotion,” says Ge.

Zhang Wei, a professor of linguistics at Renmin University of China, thinks that such short expressions carry so little emotion that they separate people. Chatting online cannot convey the same emotions as communication in real life. This makes it difficult to understand the other person’s true intentions. “That’s why I always suggest talking face to face to resolve problems,” says Zhang. “Unfortunately the reality is that most people spend less time talking to each other in this way.”Anxiety and insecurity

Zhang further explains that the reason why people’s mood is strongly affected by such unemotional words when communicating online is rooted in social anxiety. People feel insecure because of all kinds of pressures. It’s like a vicious circle —“Less time for face-to-face communication leads to more online communication, but online expressions of emotion are too

What makes all of these especially unusual is that Ruggiero, 24, has only one leg. When he was a 19-year-old musical theater student at New Jersey’s Montclair State University, Ruggiero had a rare bone cancer in his right leg. Finally his leg would have to be amputated (截) below the knee. Such a setback could have easily ended the career of a less tough person, but Ruggiero, who has been dancing since he was five, now puts the experience into his performance. His show, “The One-Legged Song and Dance Man: Volume 3”,explains how he returned to dance just 18 months after the amputation. His dance now relies on the use of a peg leg(假肢) ,he explains. The secret to his surprising success, he says, was being a “stubborn”patient who refused to give up on his dance and performing studies, despite the advice of his doctor. “It was a real setback, but after it was all over,I said, ‘You know what? I need to pick up right where I left off and continue my career, ’”Ruggiero said. Ruggiero has come to view his peg leg as an instrument. “Tap dancers—they’re always calling themselves musicians, and their feet are their instrument, ” he said. Noting that many audience members will never have seen a one-legged dancer
